SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo biologists are part of a team of researchers that have rescued the last remaining southwestern pond turtles from an area ravaged by the Bobcat Fire. The researchers spend the last couple of weeks finding and recovering the reptiles from the San Gabriel Mountains. The area, which was scorched by the Bobcat Fire, from Sept. 6 until early November, is now at risk of mudslides and debris flows from rain, which could impact the turtles."Our role as conservationists is to provide refuge and care for wildlife in trouble," said Kim Gray, curator of herpetology and ichthyology, San Diego Zoo Global. "We are happy to make a home for these pond turtles until their home in the mountains can be made safe for them and their offspring."The southwestern pond turtle is now rare in Southern California and faces risks to its survival, including habitat loss, invasive nonnative predators and competitors.Over the two weeks, researchers rescued eight southwestern pond turtles. The turtles will be cared for at the San Diego Zoo until their habitat is made after this year’s rainy season. When their habitat is secure, they will be returned. 1173

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some workers hit hard by the pandemic are now turning to an entrepreneur program at San Diego Miramar College. In late March, Billie Guinto got word that her job booking events for an event planning agency was put on pause by COVID-19."My first reaction was dread ... If this lasts too long, I'm going to deplete my savings," said Guinto.Guinto tried to sign up for unemployment but has yet to hear back. She renewed her realtor license and then decided to take a chance."I had to pivot quickly, and I knew this program was getting off to a really good start," said Guinto. She enrolled in the summer session of Miramar College's REC Innovation Lab, a year-old incubator program aimed at budding entrepreneurs, especially in underrepresented communities. The now-virtual lab includes courses, pitch sessions, networking, and mentoring. For Guinto, the program is helping her grow her big idea."I decided to create All Source Events, an application for professional event planners," said Guinto. Her app will be a one-stop-shop for event planning, from scheduling to marketing to ticketing. Weeks into the program, she's already pitching to possible investors."By the end of summer, I plan to have a working iteration of the app to hand out to event planners to test and work out the kinks," said Guinto.Guinto is one of the dozens of students, many of them jobless, now following their entrepreneur dreams."My attitude changed tremendously, I am excited, hopeful, and confident. There is light at the end of the tunnel," said Guinto. 1556

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University officials say two students have tested positive for coronavirus, but that the cases are not connected and the risk to the campus is low.A statement on behalf of the campus said the school confirmed Wednesday the two students had tested positive and that both students live off-campus. The students were tested by the college's Student Health Services. The two cases are not believed to be connected to any reported off-campus gatherings, the school statement said. RELATED: San Diego State fraternities ban social events this fall due to COVID-19"The two students did not interact with campus, or with any SDSU employees outside of the SHS COVID-19 Test Collection Booth, and were not in any other spaces utilized by the campus community. The SHS COVID-19 Test Collection Booth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected as part of patient care and enhanced COVID-19 disinfection protocols," the school statement read.Since March 2020, the school says it has had 27 confirmed COVID-19 cases within the broader campus community among faculty, staff, students, and visitors to campus, including the SDSU Imperial Valley campus. The school said the risk to others on campus is low and SHS is in the process of performing contact tracing.RELATED: SDSU begins 2020-21 school year with mostly virtual classes"SHS is in the process of speaking with the individuals known to have been in direct contact with the two separate students. All are following established public health protocols for isolation and quarantine, and exposure risk to others on campus is deemed low. Due to privacy restrictions, we cannot share the name or additional details about the individuals," SDSU's statement said.Just this week, the school began its 2020-21 school year with almost all of its cases being held virtually.
