SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- COVID-19 outreach in the Latino community is getting a boost after San Diego County partnered with promotoras to help with contact tracing. Promotoras, which literally means promoters, are bilingual community health workers. The goal is to lower the high number of COVID-19 cases among Latinos in the county. Latinos and Hispanics make up almost 63% of COVID-19 cases in the county, but Latinos make up only 34% of the population.The promotoras are members of the communities where they will be working. The county announced the partnership at the beginning of August and now the promotoras are out in the community helping with contact tracing. The promotoras will work in underserved communities and Latino neighborhoods. ABC 10News spoke to two promotoras working with South Bay Community Services. They are getting ready to start on September 1st. In total, 17 promotoras with the organization will start on that day. They've all received hours of training and are certified contact tracers. The promotoras will have the task of reaching out to the close contacts of positive COVID-19 cases. The contact is made over the phone or via email and text and the promotoras will ask things about testing and if they're presenting any symptoms. The county's partnership also includes promotoras from San Diego State and will include promotoras that speak other languages like Tagalog and Arabic. 1421
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the biotech industry grows in San Diego, many companies are hiring, offering people a chance at high-paying jobs in an emerging field."The jobs that are in demand are the ones most difficult to fill," says Lisa Bozinovic, Executive Director of the Biocom Institute, a trade association for the industry in California.According to Biocom's most recent survey of the companies across the state, 88 percent say they plan to expand and hire in the next 12 months. The average salary is 7,000."They need people skilled in IT, HR, administration, accounting, sales," Bozinovic says. "There's a wide variety of opportunities to enter the industry."RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Biotech fields seek veterans for jobsAs demand for employees grows, Biocom is working to let people know they don't need to be a lab scientist or have an advanced degree to qualify.Most companies want someone to have 190 hours of practical lab skills experience before they start. But they're willing to train on the job, and are also partnering with local colleges to help people get that experience.MiraCosta College offers a 4-year degree in Biomanufacturing that teaches students how to combine the science with areas like quality control and regulatory compliance.RELATED: Single mom uses free career training to switch jobsThe Southern California Technology Center has programs at several Community Colleges across San Diego offering starter classes that can help people get their foot in the door.Mesa College's Bridges to Baccalaureate program helps minorities and underrepresented groups get into the industry.Biocom?has workforce development programs and special programs for veterans."A couple of courses at a community college will help someone get enough skills to transfer into the industry from something totally different," says Bozinovic. "We're lucky that San Diego has that life-science industry and we have that opportunity."Ashley Reynolds, who works in Regulatory Affairs at Tandem Diabetes, says programs like these helped her find a place in the industry, even though she had no interest in lab work."There's no one way to do something," she says.Reynolds got a bachelor's degree in biology from UC Riverside and a master's degree in regulatory affairs at San Diego State. She also went to Cal State San Marcos for a lab tech certificate. She says it was a lot of work, but it's been worth it in the long run."You make a path to get there and don't even worry about all the other obstacles in your way," she says. "If you're determined to get there, you will."That's the message Bozinovic has as well. It may take returning to school, but it's an investment in your long-term future."For ,000, you can get a four year degree and slide right into a job," she says of the program at MiraCosta. And, remember, you don't always need a full four year degree.Bozinovic and Reynolds both say someone looking to make a change should take some time to learn about the industry first, and see what part of it interests them. The best way to do that is to go to career fairs or science expos and talk to people at the booths. There are also trade associations and professional groups to join, even if you're still looking for a job."Whatever you put into it is what you'll get out of it," says Reynolds.Anyone interested in a career change can get connected in San Diego through the San Diego Biotechnology Network. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Best Buy is planning to hire about 1,000 new employees in San Diego and three other cities over the next two years.The company says the new workers will be working for its digital technology team. Best Buy added that 30% of those hires will specifically be Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and women talent.Positions include full-time spots for product managers, engineers, data scientists, and user experience designers in its local technology offices."With millions relying on tech to learn, work and stay connected, this team is responsible for implementing tech innovations that enhance the customer experience, in-store and online," the company's announcement said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the San Diego Padres reopened training camp - this time at Petco Park - a Padres fan is hoping to share one of the only seats in town for baseball.For the past eight years, Chip Messenger has leased a unit on the 15th floor in the Legend building, overlooking Petco Park."The view never disappoints. Everyone is always amazed," said Messenger.The view is about to become even more priceless because the Padres aren't expected to open up the stadium to fans when they start the season later this month. Messenger will have one of the only seats in town to watch live baseball."Looking for forward to it. I think people have been isolated and bored. Ready for something positive to happen," said Messenger.In late June, Messenger tweeted a photo of his view of Petco Park, sparking thousands of likes and hundreds of replies."They tell me, 'I'll bring the beer. I'll bring the fish tacos. Do you remember me from first grade? Do you need a new best friend?'" said Messenger.Messenger will be making a lot of new frends. This season, he plans to share his balcony with other baseball fans."This is a unique opportunity, and I'm happy to share it with people who won't get a chance to watch baseball," said Messenger.He hasn't figured out how he'll divvy up the invites. The financial planner says he won't be accepting money, but probably won't turn down food or adult beverages. He's hoping his plans will also benefit the Padres. He counts about a hundred nearby balconies facing the stadium, which could translate into a lot of cheering."Probably going to be one of the few places in the country where we fans can actually watch our team play. Who knows, maybe the Padres could have a home field advantage. Could be pretty cool," said Messenger.Messenger is planning COVID precautions for his Padres viewing days.Only a handful of teams has similar views outside their stadium. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As grocery stores work to fill consumer demand created by the coronavirus pandemic, several San Diego stores are hiring.Albertsons and Vons locations in the San Diego area are working to fill about 1,000 jobs, a spokesperson told 10News. So far, more than 200 of the positions have been filled and locations are actively conducting interviews.
