NEW YORK -- A bodega clerk who was attacked by a customer in New York City is concerned mask laws will get someone killed, he said Sunday.Javier Franco and Aneuri Castillo were in a Morrisania bodega several weeks ago when they were attacked. Franco was stacking the shelves when he asked a customer to put on a mask. The customer punched him in the face.“The mask law is going to get someone killed," Franco said. "We are doing our best trying to obey the law so we don’t lose our liquor license, but it seems we could lose our life instead."Castillo was smacked in a mask confrontation with a customer."This was shocking to me," he said. "I tried to do what the governor asked us. I told him it was the law. I’m scared! Maybe he’ll come back and shoot me. It’s so hard coming to work not knowing how the day will go. I have a family and they need me, I don’t want to die in the bodega."United Bodegas of America spokesman Fernando Mateo said both incidents happened within minutes of one another. He said they're meeting with NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea soon to address their concerns.“The mayor and the governor have a responsibility to keep us all safe," he said. NEW YORK CITY — Two men have been indicted in the 2002 murder of Run-DMC DJ Jam Master Jay, officials announced on Monday.The hip-hop star, whose real name is Jason Mizell, was shot and killed in his recording studio in Queens on Oct. 30, 2002. As a DJ, he had hands of gold.The NYPD said Jam Master Jay was part of a cocaine trafficking conspiracy that led to his murder, and said the DJ had threatened to cut one of his alleged killers out of a deal with a Maryland distributor.Jay was playing video games on a couch in the studio shortly before two men were buzzed in by his assistant, Lydia High. NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Gigi Martinez held tight to her daughter, sobbing in the doorway of the Dumont Rehabilitation Center in New Rochelle Thursday.It was the first time the 60-year-old mother and grandmother from Yonkers was seeing her family in the outside world since March 28 — four months ago — when she landed in Lawrence Hospital with COVID-19."This is a miracle," Martinez said.By early April, Martinez was intubated and put on a ventilator. She remained on the breathing machine for three months, even when she was transferred to Dumont at the beginning of July.After three days on the ventilator, Martinez said doctors were delivering a scary prognosis to her three daughters."Three doctors told them to 'let me go,' but they kept fighting for me," Martinez said.Many COVID-19 patients don't survive after being placed on a ventilator. Patients usually average just three weeks on the machines — far less than Martinez's three months.Martinez developed kidney failure, sepsis and heart failure along the way."The doctors gave her zero chances and told us to 'make arrangements,'" said Milagros Rivera, one of Martinez's three daughters. "I never thought I'd lose my mom to this. We're a prayerful family. We FaceTimed every night and prayed with her."Martinez was weaned off the ventilator in early July and looked frail as she was wheeled out of Dumont on Thursday."I'm a little bit tired, but I'm blessed and so thankful," Martinez said.Because she suffered kidney failure, doctors told Martinez's family that she would likely need to undergo dialysis treatments for the rest of her life. NEWARK, N.J. - Before the holiday travel season picks up, United Airlines said they will be offering free coronavirus tests to passengers on select flights between New Jersey and the United Kingdom, beginning Nov. 16.According to a press release, the airline launched the 4-week pilot program that will run from Nov. 16 to Dec. 11.United is only rapidly testing passengers flying between Newark Liberty International Airport to London Heathrow, free of charge.United said appointments are required, and passengers will have to arrive three hours before their flight to get results back in time."We believe the ability to provide fast, same-day COVID-19 testing will play a vital role in safely reopening travel around the world and navigating quarantines and travel restrictions, particularly to key international destinations like London," said Toby Enqvist, chief customer officer for United in the news release. "Through this pilot program, we'll guarantee that everyone* onboard has tested negative for COVID-19, adding another element to our layered approach to safety. United will continue to lead on testing, while at the same time exploring new solutions that contribute to the safest travel experience possible."United said Premise Health is administering the rapid testing pilot program.Travelers flying into the UK still face a mandatory 14-day quarantine, according to the US Embassy in the United Kingdom. 1426

New York, Connecticut and New Jersey asked Wednesday for travelers from states with high coronavirus infection rates to go into quarantine for 14 days in a bid to preserve hard-fought gains as caseloads rise elsewhere in the country.“We now have to make sure the rates continue to drop,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday at a briefing in New York City, joined via video by Govs. Phil Murphy of New Jersey and Ned Lamont of Connecticut, both fellow Democrats. “We also have to make sure the virus doesn’t come on a plane again.”What was presented as a “travel advisory” that starts Thursday affects three adjacent Northeastern states that managed to check the spread of the virus this spring as New York City became a hot spot for the pandemic.Travelers from more than a half-dozen states, including Florida and Texas, are currently impacted. The quarantine will last two weeks from the time of last contact within the identified state.The announcement comes as summer travel to the states’ beaches, parks and other attractions — not to mention New York City — would normally swing into high gear.It also marks a flip-flop in the COVID-19 battle since March, when Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, both Republicans, separately issued orders requiring people flying in from the New York tri-state area, where cases were surging, to quarantine for 14 days.Now, Florida and Texas are among the struggling states being eyed warily by the three northern governors.“As Governor DeSantis said on Saturday, Governors have a prerogative to do what they need to do,” press secretary Cody McCloud said. “He just asks that Floridians not be quarantined in the nursing homes in New York.”Murphy called a quarantine the smart thing.“We have taken our people, the three of us, these three states, to hell and back,” Murphy said. “The last thing we need to do right now is subject our folks to another round.”The states will relay the quarantine message on highways, at airports, and through websites and social media.
