BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Major indices of China's large ports mostly pointed to better performance in April with increasing cargo throughput and exports volume, the Ministry of Transport said Wednesday.According to latest figures posted on the ministry's website, China's large sea ports and river ports saw rapid throughput growth in cargo, exported goods volume and containers from January to April.Passenger throughput via large ports, however, fell 18.5 percent from a year earlier to 295 million in the first four months of 2010, the ministry said.Large ports are classified in China as sea ports with an annual cargo throughput above 15 million tonnes and river ports with an annual cargo throughput above 10 million tonnes.From January to April, cargo throughput in those large ports jumped 20.2 percent year on year to about 2.48 billion tonnes, the ministry said.About 206.5 million tonnes of goods were exported via the large ports during the January-April period, up 27.2 percent from a year ago.Container throughput rose 22.4 percent year on year to 436.81 million TEUs in the first four months, according to the ministry.

GYEONGJU, South Korea, May 15 (Xinhua) -- China on Saturday called on related parties to keep calm, exercise restraint and appropriately handle Cheonan incident.Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi made the remarks while meeting with his South Korean counterpart Yu Myung-hwan ahead of a trilateral foreign ministers' meeting of China, Japan and South Korea, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said.Yang said the sinking of the South Korean navy ship "Cheonan" is an unfortunate incident. Considering the current complicated and sensitive situation on the Korean Peninsula, China hopes all parties concerned should start from the stability and peace of the Korean Peninsula and the region, proceed from long-term interest, keep calm and exercise restraint to appropriately handle the Cheonan incident.As for what the Japanese side said during the two-way meeting between Yang and his Japanese counterpart Katsuya Okada that Chinese marine surveillance ships' enforcement activities on Japan 's scientific research ships east of "medium line" has damaged Japan's sovereignty and interests, Yang stressed that China remains clear and consistent position on the East China Sea issues. GENEVA, April 20 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday asked the World Trade Organization to set up an expert panel to rule whether the European Union's antidumping duties on Chinese-made footwear violates global trade regulations.At a meeting of the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body, the Chinese delegation reiterated that the EU's antidumping measure was inconsistent with related WTO agreements and it impaired China's benefits."China requests the DSB to establish a panel to ensure the protection of China's legitimate rights and benefits under the WTO agreements," the delegation said in a statement.The delegation said that it was taking the action after the latest consultations with the EU on March 31 failed to resolve China's concerns and "no mutually satisfactory solution could be reached."The delegation's statement also urged the 27-nation bloc to bring its legislation in line with WTO agrements and "to terminate the measure on Chinese footwear on account of their inconsistency with WTO rules."The EU said it regretted the step take by China and blocked the panel request. But according to the WTO's dispute settlement procedures, a panel request can be blocked only once, which means the panel would be established automatically if China makes a second request at a DSB meeting scheduled for next month.China first brought the dispute to the WTO on Feb. 4, which initiated a 60-day consultation period between the two sides.A panel request is the second step in the WTO's dispute settlement procedure following unsuccesful consultations in finding a resolution.
