BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) -- China's policy of actively attracting foreign investment will not change, said vice minister of commerce Ma Xiuhong Friday. The Ministry of Commerce will keep working to maintain a good investment environment for foreign companies, said Ma during a discussion with multinational firms."The ministry will strengthen its communication with multinational corporations and foreign enterprises," she said.China could provide new opportunities for foreign investors as the country is in a process of modernization, urbanization and transformation of its economic development pattern, said Ma.She hoped that while achieving their own development goals, foreign enterprises could play a larger role in China's pursuit of scientific innovation, industrial upgrading, and more balanced regional economic development.Representatives from 64 multinational corporations and four foreign chambers of commerce participated in the discussion. They were joined by officials from a number of Chinese government departments, including the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Industry and Information.Foreign direct investment to China increased 7.7 percent year on year to 23.44 billion U.S. dollars in the first quarter.
BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- China's gasoline prices will be cut by 230 yuan (33.7 U.S. dollars) per tonne and diesel prices by 220 yuan per tonne from Tuesday, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced Monday. The price cuts came after a record high in price hikes in April. The previous price cut was in September 2009.Before the adjustment, the benchmark price of gasoline was 7,420 yuan per tonne and diesel 6,680 yuan per tonne.Cao Changqing, head of price department of the NDRC, said the adjustment was "timely and in a proper amount" in response to recent changes in the international crude oil prices.International crude oil prices had been rising before May, when they began to decline, the NDRC statement said. The recent drops had amounted to 4 percent, meeting price adjustment conditions, it added.Cao said the move was also based on the global and domestic economic sitations and oil supply and demand as well as the country's pricing mechanism. In 2009, China adopted an oil pricing mechanism that allows the NDRC to adjust retail fuel prices when the international crude oil price changes by more than 4 percent over 22 straight working daysThe government would raise benchmark prices for domestically-produced onshore natural gas by 230 yuan per thousand cubic meters, or 24.9 percent, to 1,155 yuan per thousand cubic meters because of relatively low prices and strong demand, he said.

GENEVA, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The international community should have "a sense of urgency" in their efforts to realize the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Chinese Minister of Health Chen Zhu said here on Monday."The deadline of the MDGs is only five years away, and we are facing huge challenges at this critical moment," Chen told the annual assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO)."The international community should have sense of mission and urgency to reach consensus, coordinate actions, and accelerate progress," Chen said.Addressing delegates from the WHO's 193 member states, Chen said that despite the unremitting efforts of the international community, "the MDG health indicators of women and children have been improving slowly and the situations are far from optimistic.""China holds that health of women and children constitutes an important element in a country's national basic health system and it reflects the social and economic development level," he stressed.Chen said the attainment of the MDGs would be "a historical milestone," and he urged governments to share this responsibility and "take stronger measures."One of the proposals the minister made at the conference was to improve the health of the people, particularly women and children."The ultimate goal of social and economic development is better life and brighter future for the people, and health is the basis of good life," he said.To improve the health of the people, countries need to build a strong and powerful health system so that they can provide comprehensive health services and tackle public health emergencies, according to the minister."All countries should attach importance to the building of such a system with articulated political commitments and substantial input," he said.Chen also highlighted the importance for controlling chronic and noncommunicable diseases, which "consume large quantities of health resources and afflict social and economic development.""To ensure sustainable health, social and economic development, the international community should conduct researches and take more effective countermeasures in its fight against such diseases, " he said. The minister also called on developed countries to increase their assistance to developing countries so that they can improve their health system and be more capable of dealing with health challenges."Health is an eternal theme of mankind, and the attainment of the MDGs is our common pursuit.
