KUNMING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese local officials were ordered to carry out pre-emptive evacuations to avoid heavy casualties in geological disasters after a series of mudslides left nearly 2,000 people dead or missing in less than two weeks.In a work conference held in southwest China's Yunnan Province, Minister of Land and Resources Xu Shaoshi ordered local officials not to hesitate in forcing residents in disasters-threatened zones to move."As long as there is a sign of geological disasters looming, officials should take it seriously and carry out the evacuations," Xu said. "It is better to hear the people's blames than their cries."Xu also ordered local offcials to strengthen monitoring efforts by using advanced technologies and mobilizing the public.China has been suffering from a string of rain-triggered disasters recently as the country battles its worst floods in more than a decade.Yunnan is the latest to be hit by massive mudslides.As of Sunday, 29 people were killed and 63 remained missing after mudslides hit the remote, mountainous town of Gongshan in the province on Wednesday.In the northwestern province of Gansu, at least 1,435 people were killed and another 330 are reported missing after an avalanche of mud and rocks hit the center town of Zhouqu County at mid-night Aug. 7.Rain-triggered mudslides also killed more than 18 people in Wenchuan and Qingchuan counties in southwest China's Sichuan - which was devastated by a massive earthquake in 2008.

BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development said Wednesday that it has begun work on the reconstruction plan for the mudslide-flattened Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province.An inspection team would be sent to the disaster-ravaged areas to gather information for drawing up the reconstruction plan, the ministry said in a brief statement posted on its website.However, it did not elaborate on the reconstruction plan nor provide detailed information about the inspection team.On the same day, Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu urged authorities to prepare for post-disaster reconstruction of the mudslide-hit regions.He said the responsible authorities must promptly send competent teams to the disaster sites to assess losses so reconstruction plans can be developed on the basis of these findings.The death toll from the massive mudslides in Zhouqu, beginning on Aug. 8, had risen to 1,287 as of 4 p.m. Wednesday, with 457 still missing, the local disaster relief headquarters said.

CHANGSHA, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has warned that China's macro economic control policy is facing mounting difficulties with the severity of the international financial crisis and the unpredictable nature of the global economic recovery."China's current economy remains good, but the domestic and international environment is extremely complicated," Wen said while addressing a symposium held Saturday in Changsha, capital of central China's Hunan Province.The symposium, which was presided over by Premier Wen, was thrown to feature economic situation in three provinces of Hubei, Hunan and Guangdong.At the symposium, Wen reiterated the government's stance in maintaining the continuity and stability of macro economic policies, and making these macro policies more flexible and targeted.Wen said the government would "work to promote stable and relatively fast domestic economic growth, restructure the economy and manage inflation expectations to ensure the government's goals for 2010 are met."The government would endeavor to resolve long-term structural problems while targeting urgent issues, Wen said.Before the symposium, Wen also inspected flood prevention and control efforts in parts of Hunan Thursday, and moved on to Changsha, the provincial capital, to visit a number of other venues including companies ranging from machinery, outsourcing to animation companies Friday.While inspecting the companies, Wen enquired about their business, employment and social security, and encouraged them to step up innovation."An internationally competitive enterprise needs products of the best quality, world-leading patent technologies and generations of excellent staff," Wen said when talking with employees in Sany Group, a Changsha-based leading Chinese engineering machinery manufacturer.Wen talked with employers and job hunters at a job market in Changsha. BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- A deputy head of the top academic institute of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said Tuesday the institute is striving to open up to the outside world.Li Jingtian, vice president of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks during a press conference on Tuesday, two days ahead of the 89th anniversary of the founding of the CPC.Li said many foreign political and business leaders and scholars were willing to give lectures or deliver speeches at the party school."As a think-tank, we have established cooperation with over 30 foreign universities, think-tanks and research institutes," said Li.Li said the Party School had trained 60,000 communist cadres over the past three decades.The party school provides various training classes and seminars for cadres at provincial and ministerial levels, party secretaries at the county level, young cadres and cadres of ethnic minorities, he said.

  

BEIJING, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang met with Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey on Monday, calling for enhanced exchanges and contacts between the two countries.This year marks the 60th anniversary of China-Switzerland diplomatic ties.
