SACRAMENTO (KGTV) -- Wednesday, State Treasurer John Chiang and the brother of one of the Las Vegas shooting victims called on board members of an educator-only pension fund to stop investing in the sellers of military-style assault weapons, ammunition and other devices banned in California.Jason Irvine, the brother of slain San Diego attorney Jennifer Irvine (pictured below), said he found out his sister had been shot the morning after the shooting when his sister’s friends called him.RELATED: San Diego attorney among victims of Las Vegas concert shootingIrvine recalled the moment on Wednesday saying, “I was told that Jennifer was dancing and having the time of her life one moment, and then shot dead through the head in the next.”CalSTRS is the largest educator-only pension fund in the world, according to their website. As of September, the fund managed a portfolio worth more than 5 billion.RELATED: Names of everyone killed in Las Vegas mass shooting“Why would CalSTRS invest the money of school teachers in companies that sell weapons that injure and kill school teachers,” Irvine said of CalSTRS.“No brother should have to bury his sister or receive her ashes in a box because she was shot by a military-style weapon,” said Irvine.A number of gun law advocates also spoke out at the event.  1338

Right now, dozens of train cars carrying 10 million pounds of poop are stranded in a rural Alabama rail yard. Technically it's biowaste, but to the 982 residents in the small town of Parrish, that's just semantics. They want it gone. The load has been there for almost two months, and it's making the whole place smell like a rotting animal carcass. To add insult to injury, it isn't even their poop. For the last year, waste management facilities in New York and one in New Jersey have been shipping tons of biowaste -- literally, tons -- to Big Sky Environmental, a private landfill in Adamsville, Alabama. But in January, the neighboring town of West Jefferson filed an injunction against Big Sky to keep the sludge from being stored in a nearby rail yard.It was successful -- but as a result, the poo already in transit got moved to Parrish, where there are no zoning laws to prevent the waste from being stored. 922

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California's nation-leading gas prices are set to climb even higher Monday, when the state gas tax increases 5.6 cents a gallon. It's the latest increase from a 2017 law designed to raise about billion a year for road and mass transit programs. It's among several changes taking effect at mid-year.RELATED: California will have the highest gas tax in the US starting July 1A 12 cent-per-gallon boost came that November, and voters last year rejected a Republican-led effort to repeal the law. But Southern California voters recalled one Democratic lawmaker who helped pass the measure. The money is split between state and local governments, with much of going to fix potholes and rebuild crumbling roads, bridges and public transportation.Republicans note that the tax is increasing even as Gov. Gavin Newsom and fellow Democrats complained about high gas prices. 898

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The California Assembly has approved new rules for electric bikes and scooters.Businesses like Bird and Spin have deployed scooters to cities across California and the country in recent years. Often local governments have not set up permits or regulations for the devices.A bill passed by the Assembly on Monday would require electric bike and scooter companies to get permits from cities. It would also require them to agree to rules for parking, maintenance and safety.Democratic Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi, the bill's author, says while electric bikes are a fun and eco-friendly mode of transportation. But he says they can be hazardous if they are parked or ridden improperly on sidewalks. The Assembly passed the bill 47-12.It now goes to the state Senate.__The bill is AB1286. 814

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A California judge has thrown out a 2016 state law allowing the terminally ill to end their lives, ruling it was unconstitutionally approved by the Legislature.Lawyers for advocates and opponents say Riverside County Superior Court Judge Daniel Ottolia did not rule on the legality of physician-assisted death. He issued an oral ruling Tuesday saying lawmakers acted illegally in passing the law during a special session devoted to other topics.Ottolia kept the law in place and gave the state attorney general five days to appeal.RELATED:  579
