IMPERIAL BEACH (KGTV) — Some South Bay parents are upset after they say their elementary school abruptly canceled an annual Christmas tradition out of deference to families who do not observe the holiday.For years, students at Oneonta Elementary School in Imperial Beach had a December assembly featuring Christmas decorations, Christmas songs and a visit from Santa.This year’s December assembly was held Friday without a Christmas show. Teachers learned of the change Wednesday, according to 6th grade parent Jose Cariman.“No notice to the parents. No notice to the teachers, no advance notice for anything,” he said. “What are they teaching [the students]? And it’s unfortunate because not all of us can afford to take them to the mall to see Santa. So some of the kids just do it at school. This is where they get to tell Santa their Christmas list,” she said.A district press release mentions an event at Mendoza Elementary called “Irish You a Merry Christmas.” The event was sponsored by outside groups and held on a Saturday. Hundreds of museums across the country are struggling financially. Many were shut down for long periods of time during stay-at-home orders to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Some are still not ready to reopen. "We're targeting to reopen next year. Hopefully, we will sit back and recover and be able to think through and make sure everything will be safe for everybody," said Lily Birmingham, the director of the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum. Birmingham's museum, like many others, shut down in March because of shelter-in-place restrictions."We have very little funding to begin with so with the closure of the museum, we can not raise funding. We couldn't get admission funding so we had to lay off our employees. We now rely on volunteers, so it's very difficult. Funding is always difficult for museums. We're a non-profit organization," said Birmingham.Recently, The American Alliance of Museums surveyed more than 750 museums nationwide. From large to small and in urban and rural communities. What they found was that nearly one-third of them may not survive this pandemic."Back in March, I kind of speculated that it might be 25-30% of museums that would not make it through an extended financial crisis and indeed the survey did confirm our worst fears that one in three museums say there is a significant risk for having to close permanently," said Laura Lott, the President and CEO of the American Alliance of Museums. Lott says most museums make the majority of their money from ticket sales, renting their space for events and sales from their gift shops and cafes. Lott says museums have three major impacts on their communities, the first is economic."Museums contribute more to the economy than we might imagine. They employ 750,000 people and pay billion in tax revenue at the state, federal and local level, even though most are non-profits," explained Lott.The second impact is on education, as they host numerous schools for field trips. Lott says the third impact museums have is they protect our cultural heritage. "Each museum is unique. It holds unique artifacts and stories that we’ve chosen to preserve and protect for future generations and if those museums go away, they're likely to be gone forever," said Lott.For the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum, historians have been collecting items dating back more than 100 years, preserving history of when Chinese immigrants first came to California. "There's a couple things people can do to help museums right now. People need to really contact their legislators and let them know why their museums are important to them and advocate that museums be included in any financial relief at all levels; the federal, state and local levels," said Lott."It could be monetary, of course, is the best. Volunteer hours or just show the appreciation. Show the concern and care so we know people love our museum. So, there are different ways to show the appreciation," said Birmingham. If it's been a while since you've booked a flight, travel insurance is that thing that pops up at the end of a sale.“At the end, they’re going to say, ‘Hey, this many people bought travel insurance, don’t you want to buy travel insurance too?’ And I think a lot of people generally, before COVID, would think, ‘Oh they’re trying to upset me and move along,’” said Michael Parrish DuDell, chief strategy officer for Couponfollow.com. “But what we’re seeing, in fact, is that more and more people are saying, ‘I want that insurance I want to protect my future travel.’"Couponfollow.com was designed, DuDell said, to save consumers both time and money. He says the company is always asking consumers about their money and how they spend it.“As we looked closer at how people are traveling, where they were spending their money, where they were allocating their time, we found these little niche interesting areas,” DuDell said.He says those areas include things like travel insurance.“What we found is that 75% of people who had already booked flights had purchased trip insurance. That was a staggering number that is a 55% increase than what is thought of as the norm,” DuDell said.So, why the increase? Travel anxiety amid the pandemic is likely a big part of it.“There is so much uncertainty in the world right now, and of course that’s around the pandemic, but there’s other kinds of uncertainty too and I think people feel like they’re taking a strong risk in general when they’re traveling,” DuDell said. And because there's been so much industry disruption surrounding travel, the future is being rewritten now.“I definitely believe they’re going to rewrite the travel insurance, they’re being investigated right now,” Tayne said. “It's being taken up in Congress in terms of the validity of the travel insurance and there’s some concern that travel insurance might be what’s termed either a ‘scam’ or a ‘money-making proposition’ that’s not really beneficial to the consumer.”In March, the House Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy launched an investigation into whether travel insurance provided any “meaningful protection” for consumers. The investigation was spurred amid the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, when many travelers were canceling trips as states began implementing stay-at-home orders.“The evidence shows consumers are purchasing standard travel insurance products, thinking they will be covered if they cancel their trip because of coronavirus,” Rep. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson detailed his wife's involvement Tuesday in picking out a dining room set for his office, telling a House subcommittee, "I left it with my wife."Carson said that his wife, Candy, selected "a style and a color" of the furniture set that ultimately cost HUD ,000."A style and a color was selected by her with the caveat that we were not happy with the pricing and they needed to find something," Carson told lawmakers.He went on to defend her, "If anybody knew my wife, they would realize how ridiculous this was. She's the most frugal person in the world."A HUD spokesperson had previously told CNN in a statement last month that "Mrs. Carson and the secretary had no awareness that the table was being purchased." Internal HUD emails indicated that the Carsons had picked out the furniture.Carson said Tuesday the issue of replacing the dining room set was raised "because people were being stuck by nails, the chairs collapsed with somebody sitting in it, it's 50 years old.""I said, 'OK, we can potentially do that.' I asked my wife also to help me with that," he told lawmakers."They showed us some catalogs. The prices were beyond what I wanted to pay. I made it clear that just didn't seem right to me. And, you know, I left it with my wife," he said.Carson argued that he wasn't concerned about the furniture because he had more important issues to handle as HUD secretary.Carson said he first heard of the ,000 price tag after it was reported and "immediately" canceled the order from the interior design firm Sebree and Associates in Baltimore, Maryland.
