SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman and a man were attacked by a man with a knife in the East Village area of San Diego and the suspect was at large this morning.The 32-year-old woman was sitting near a Jack in the Box restaurant in the 1100 block of C Street, near Park Boulevard, at 10:40 p.m. Friday when a man walked up to her and, without saying anything, cut the left side of her face with a knife and ran away northbound on Park Boulevard, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The victim was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening wounds.About a block away, the suspect approached a 62-year-old man and pressed a knife against the left side of the man's neck, then ran away in an unknown direction. The man suffered scratches to his neck, but did not go to a hospital, Heims said.A detailed description of the suspect was not immediately available. 892

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - For yet another week, San Diego County avoided the fate of dropping into the dreaded purple tier of California's coronavirus monitoring system, with an adjusted case rate of 6.5 new daily COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population.While the county's unadjusted case rate is 7.4 per 100,000 -- enough to be in the most restrictive purple tier, which has a floor of 7 per 100,000 -- the high volume of tests the county is able to perform daily allows for an adjustment from the state. This adjustment has kept the county in the red tier for several weeks, saving it from having to shut down nearly all non-essential indoor businesses.The state data, which is updated every Tuesday, reflects the previous week's case data to determine where counties stand in the state's four-tiered reopening system.San Diego County did show modest improvement, dropping 0.4 from last week's unadjusted case rate of 7.8. The testing positivity rate continued an upward trend, rising 0.2% from last week to reach 3.5%, but remains low enough for this metric to remain in the orange tier. If a county reports statistics meeting metrics in a higher tier for two consecutive weeks, it will move into that more restrictive tier for a minimum of three weeks.The state's health equity metric, which looks at the testing positivity for areas with the lowest healthy conditions, dropped from 5.5% to 5.1% and entered the orange tier. This metric does not move counties backward to more restrictive tiers, but is required to advance.County health officials reported 269 new COVID-19 infections and seven deaths Tuesday, bringing the case total to 55,210 and the death toll to 877.Five men and two women died between Oct. 22 and Oct. 25, with one death occurring July 19. Their ages ranged from early 60s to mid-80s. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who sexually trafficked a 15-year-old girl in the San Diego area was sentenced today to 15 years in federal custody. Joseph Price, 24, of San Diego, convinced the victim to post an online advertisement offering sex and drove her to meet with customers throughout San Diego County, according to court documents.The complaint filed last year states that the girl took part in the commercial sex acts on nearly a dozen occasions last summer and all of the money she earned went to Price. She also told investigators that on one occasion, when she did not want to engage in certain sex acts that the customer -- or ``john'' -- requested, Price struck her in the face.Price was arrested last August by San Diego police in connection with a parole violation stemming from a first-degree burglary conviction. He was later charged with sex trafficking of a minor by federal prosecutors and pleaded guilty last December.As part of his plea, Price also admitted to meeting two other underage girls over social media and encouraging them to take part in sex acts for money. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A person at Southwestern College has tested positive for tuberculosis and may have exposed others to the disease, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Tuesday.The agency is working with the college to notify people who were possible exposed to TB. The period of possible exposure is from last Sept. 10 through Feb. 21, according to the HHSA.Tuberculosis is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact with an infectious person. Most people who are exposed do not become infected."We are recommending that all the identified people get tested to make sure they are not infected," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent the infectious form of the disease."The HHSA and college are reaching out to students and other members of the public who possibly interacted with the positive-testing individual. They can go to the college's Student Health Services Student Center, Room 601F, 900 Otay Lakes Road, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.Affected college employees will be tested separately by Occupational Health.The infected person was not publicly identified, nor did officials specify whether it was a student or staffer.Symptoms of active tuberculosis include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. Tuberculosis can be treated and cured with medication. People who have TB symptoms or are immuno-compromised are encouraged to see their medical health care provider to rule out TB.Tuberculosis is not uncommon in the San Diego region but has been decreasing since the early 1990s and has stabilized in recent years.
