SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Texas company has been awarded a contract to erect nearly 30 miles of fencing along California's border with Mexico.U.S. Customs and Border Protection awarded 7 million in construction contracts to Texas-based construction company SLSCO. The contracts include up to 14 miles of secondary wall and up to 15 miles of primary pedestrian replacement wall in California within the San Diego, Yuma, and El Centro Sectors.The 15-mile primary pedestrian replacement wall will include the installation of a new, 30-foot steel bollard wall: About 11 miles in Calexico, three miles in Tecate, and one mile in Andrade. According to CBP, these areas represent areas where wall replacement has been a priority. Construction for that 6 million project is slated to begin in July 2019.The secondary wall project is a 1 million contract and will include up to 14 miles of the same 30-foot steel bollard wall adjacent to San Diego's primary fence replacement project that is currently under construction. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Ocean Beach man says he was home when two burglars in a white Mercedes-Benz were raiding his garage and stealing his vehicle.      Along Lotus Street last week around 1:30 in the afternoon, Evan Montoya was in his upstairs bedroom and never heard a thing.  But when he later went down to the garage, he noticed some things were out of place and his car keys were gone.  Outside, the car belonging to Montoya - an Uber and Lyft driver - was nowhere to be found."My heart sank into the pit of my stomach.  That's my livelihood.  They took my entire world when they took my car," said Montoya.But that was hardly the entire loss.  Montoya believes the intruders slipped under the garage door - left open because the garage gets hot - before grabbing anything electric."Basically they went on a shopping spree through our garage and took whatever they wanted," said Montoya.  After the break-in, a neighbor handed him surveillance video showing a white Mercedes sedan stopping in the alley in front of the garage.  In the video, a man and a woman are seen going back and forth to their garage, before they finally drive off."Makes you feel unsafe in your home, which is the one place you're supposed to feel safe," said Montoya.Montoya's car was found abandoned a few days later.  Meanwhile, the video has been shared by neighbors across social media.  Some seven other neighbors have reported similar, recent break-ins. "People going through alleys stealing from houses," said Montoya.If you have any information on the cases, call Crimestoppers at 888-580-8477. 1659

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Almost 2,000 people gathered in San Diego to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Friday at the 38th annual Human Dignity Award breakfast in Mission Valley. “He fought and gave his life not just for African Americans but for everyone,” said Dee Sanford, this year’s honoree. Sanford stared a telecommunications business in 1994, was an adjunct professor at colleges, and created public access television and radio stations. “You don't do it for honor but when someone remembers and acknowledges your work, it’s really a humbling experience,” she said. My father was part of the civil rights movement. He was our king,” said Sanford. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Southern California athlete said his life was changed forever from a stem cell product he said came from a San Diego company. “It’s been tough. And it’s still tough,” said Alex Reyes. Team 10 interviewed Reyes at a San Bernardino park, where he took a few moments to play with his young children. Those are the moments he treasures because last year, even holding his kids was something he could not do. “I couldn’t walk for about three and a half to four weeks. I was on a bedpan. It was one of the hardest things I had to go through in my life,” Reyes said.This is coming from a man used to taking punches. He has several accomplishments in mixed martial arts, including King of the Cage Junior Welterweight and Lightweight Champion, as well as the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Absolute Purple Belt Champion. Reyes was signed to the UFC back in September of 2017 to compete in the Lightweight Division. In the UFC, he was known as the Executioner. “It was just the beginning for me,” Reyes said.He started doing stem cell injections last year to help with an old back injury. “It was kind of nagging,” he told Team 10.The first one he tried went well. “It helps regenerate the tissue… there was improvement, and I felt better,” he said.
