Amid a firefight along Highway 163, bystanders on the Vermont Street Bridge looking on soon after the flames spark. Fire crews would put out that fire without any major damage. Months later, a smaller fire erupted in the same area, near another encampment. Marybeth Chruden and the University Heights Community Association organized a petition drive, leading the San Diego City Council to approve more than a million dollars for canyon abatements across the city, including one at the University Heights site in July.In the past few weeks, that site looked a lot different."Shocked, but in a way, not surprised," said Chruden.Chruden's group posted photos on their Facebook page of homeless encampments and the surrounding mess."It shows they are very comfortable, out in the open ... We see people smoking and little campfires down there. The fire danger still high with dry materials in that canyon," said Chruden.Chruden says after several requests on the city's 'Get It Done' app, crews cleared out the area Wednesday morning, except for one mattress. The problem? She expects the homeless to move back in soon."Maybe tonight, in three days or four days. She was placed under self-isolation at the base before being brought back to the hospital.The petition:Following the confusion, a petition — written in both English and Chinese by an unknown author — suggested several precautions be taken in the future:"Everyone in the facility be tested;Preventing the gathering of large numbers of people into small, enclosed environments. The alternatives we suggest are the following:In room temperature taking in the morning;Meals delivered to the door;Townhalls through conference calls;Periodic delivery of personal protective gear to each room including masks and sanitizing alcohol for in room disinfection;Provision of hand sanitizer at the front desk and in the playground; andDisinfection of public areas 2-3 times/day including playground, laundry room, door knobs, etc."The petition adds that, "CDC’s current working assumption is the virus won’t spread until symptoms develop. However, we strongly disagree with using that assumption as the basis against broader testing ... Animals, package thieves.But one Poway camera caught something else that has some parents and teachers scratching their heads.Joanne Woodward, a 2nd-grade Poway Unified School District teacher, says a doorbell camera caught a school board member hanging election flyers on door handles.The problem? The flyers featured scathing "report cards" of members up for re-election containing false information. "My students would be shocked, all of the students at our school would be shocked to think that an adult, a role model at our school, would do something like this," Woodward said.The video was taken in the days leading up to the election. It shows Poway Unified school board member Kimberley Beatty and her husband, Edward, placing the door hangers on handles in Poway.The "report cards" claimed that the two members up for re-election had colluded with criminals, used taxpayer dollars for themselves, and wouldn't let students speak at meetings."Just appalling," Woodward added. There's the issue of who the flyer claims paid for the materials: "Citizens for Sound Governance."
