CHICAGO — From May to October, a team of people is working every day, even weekends, to look for dead birds on the ground in downtown Chicago.Annually, about 5,000 birds that are not native to the region are injured or killed after colliding into Chicago’s glassy reflective skyscrapers. The team looking for the birds is documenting what kind are coming though the city. The birds live in rain forests and wild areas and are not experienced with tall buildings, group members say. It’s a foreign environment for them, so they are easily hurt, says group member Annette Prince. The group aims to decrease the number of birds killed in the city and is pushing for more bird-friendly building designs throughout the nation. One suggestion the team has is to turn lights out at night.“We are No. 1 in the urban lighting we put out,” Prince said. Less glass helps with the problem, too.“It’s estimated that there are a billion birds a year killed in windows, with a huge concentrations in cities like Chicago,” she said. This is something the U.S. can fix, Prince said.“There are things you can do to make buildings safe, and to protect these birds that are so valuable to us,” she said. 1192

CLEVELAND — Nadine and Robert Proe said facing a 2009 bankruptcy wasn't easy, but now 14 years later, they are still left with an unexpected ,000 demolition bill from the City of Cleveland.Robert Proe showed WEWS the documents proving he signed over his Cleveland home to EMC Mortgage when he filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, and said he heard almost nothing about his former home until it was demolished in 2016.Nadine Proe said neighbors were telling them the house was going downhill shortly after they moved out."It was heartbreaking because it was a good house," Robert Proe said. "Apparently it was vandalized, we never got any notice from the police. My neighbor mentioned a fire, never was contacted about a fire by the city."Robert Proe said he was told by a city inspector that he was no longer responsible for the home after the bank unsuccessfully tried to sell the home at sheriff's sale. But then, shortly after the house was taken down, he was shocked when he received the demolition and maintenance bill.He said he was never given any notice that the bank decided to vacate the foreclosure, and never took his name off of the property."If they would have told me in the beginning that I was still responsible for this house, it would have still been beautiful, someone could have bought it," he said. "I thought I no longer owned the home, I was told I couldn't go on the property, while the bank ran it into the ground.""Now I'm faced with this huge bill that wasn't my fault."WEWS attempted to reach EMC Mortgage about this case but all three company phone numbers had been disconnected.Cleveland Housing Court Judge Ron O'Leary told WEWS there are some efforts being made to change state law, making it more difficult for banks to file a foreclosure and then file to vacate that motion when it believes the finances aren't favorable.O'Leary warned homeowners going through bankruptcy to keep a close watch on county property records as the bank continues to sell the home to another owner. "I can (see) where people would look at this and say it's not fair," O'Leary said. "People that do housing policy that are looking at whether or not any changes to the law need to be done."O'Leary said his court is trying to better educate homeowners in foreclosure.Still, former homeowners like the Proes believe changes in state law are needed."Well I'm here to tell you the system is broke, it's not going to be fine," Robert Proe said. "This is ... 14 years later, and I'm still dealing with it. We got to get a grip on this, something has to be done." 2583

DENVER — While riding on two wheels, bicyclist Mike Stejskal has one goal: safety. The long-time bike rider knows how sketchy sharing the streets with cars can be.“The traffic volume is too high and it's stressful interacting with all the cars.,” Stejskal said while riding. "There’s way more chill routes." So before going out for a spin, Stejskal maps out at all the routes that will get him to where he’s going in the least amount of danger.“To me, I don’t understand why we would pick as the same place to send cyclists down as buses,” he said. CHICAGO, Illinois (WBBM) — Federal charges were filed against Donald Greene Sr. and Donald Green Jr. -- a Chicago area father and son -- for allegedly selling body parts on the black market from people who thought they were donating to science. The pair also allegedly sold parts they knew were diseased without telling their buyers.Bodies known to have HIV, sepsis and hepatitis kept on ice, then sold. Some were sold for up to 0,000.The father and son duo was behind the now shuttered Biological Resource Center of Illinois.Per a search warrant, a mother was told her son’s tissues would be donated to colleges and research centers.Instead, parts of him sold for ,000.In the charges filed, United States attorneys repeatedly call it a scheme "to defraud customers of the Biological Resource Center of Illinois."It's not illegal to dismember and broker body parts -- per se.But it is illegal to knowingly sell remains positive for infectious disease. It is alleged the Greene’s did this from 2008 to 2014.The federal document charging the Greene’s alleges the men sold to Detroit Medical Center’s sports medicine department at least one specimen that “had previously tested positive for hepatitis. This fact was concealed by Donald A. Greene Sr.'s scheme to defraud."Greene Sr. is charged with wire fraud. While Greene Jr. faces a felony for intentionally concealing a crime.Authorities were led to the Greene’s while investigating Detroit body broker Arthur Rathburn, who is now in federal prison. 1517
