LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Mudslides, flooded freeways and dangerous driving conditions plagued the Southland Thursday thanks to a second straight day of rain, prompting road closures, mandatory evacuation orders in Orange County and fears that the situation could get much worse before the storm moves out. As of midday, no evacuation orders had been issued in the Malibu area, the scene of the recent Woolsey Fire that now has residents on the lookout for mud and debris flows. A mudslide during the morning commute inundated a stretch of Pacific Coast Highway near Leo Carrillo State Beach, forcing a full closure of the heavily traveled roadway clear north to Ventura County. Crews had the bulk of the mud cleared by midday, and the road was reopened. In Orange County, voluntary evacuation orders were issued Thursday morning for select neighborhoods near the Holy Fire, affecting the Trabuco Creek, Rose Canyon and Mystic Oaks/El Cariso areas. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nick Cannon has apologized for "hurtful and divisive" anti-Semitic comments that led ViacomCBS to cut ties with the TV host and producer. The company's move came in response to remarks made by Cannon on a podcast in which he discussed racial bias with a former Public Enemy member, Richard Griffin. Cannon produced "Wild 'n Out," a comedy improv series for VH1, the ViacomCBS-owned cable channel. Cannon says in a series of apology tweets that he had spoken with several Jewish leaders Wednesday and was committed to better educating himself in the future. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Broadway soprano Rebecca Luker has died at 59. She was a three-time Tony-nominated actor who starred in some of the biggest Broadway hits of the past three decades. Sarah Fargo, her agent, says Luker died Wednesday. The actor went public in 2020 saying she had been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease, known as ALS. Luker was the best actress Tony nominee in 1995 playing Magnolia in “Showboat,” the best actress nominee in 2000 for playing Marian in “The Music Man” opposite Craig Bierko, and a best-featured actress nominee in 2007 as Winifred Banks in “Mary Poppins.”Tributes for Luker flooded in after news broke of her passing away. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Chateau Marmont, a Hollywood hotspot for nearly a century, will be converted into a members-only hotel over the next year. The Los Angeles Times reports the owner plans to turn the 91-year-old building into a hotel where a select group of members buys into "a piece of a portfolio of the best real estate in the world." Members will own shares of the property and pay regular fees to cover management costs. In exchange, they'll get the use of a private dining area, a personal butler, and the freedom to leave their belongings and come and go during extended stays.According to the hotel, they are still taking reservations only by phone or email amid the coronavirus pandemic."During these challenging times, our Hotel remains open for the time being," the hotel stated on its website. "We are monitoring the situation each day and continue our operation on a smaller scale and with an even greater focus on health.
