Called nomophobia, short for no more phone phobia, 73 percent of teens in a recent addiction study reported feeling anxious when their phones had no charge according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse for Teens. That same study found that the teens checked their phones once every 23 minutes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A person was hit and killed following a crash in San Diego late Saturday night. CHP says a driver lost control and crashed on SR-94 just west of I-805 around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night. According to officers, the driver then got out of the car and started walking to an off-ramp when they were hit by another vehicle. The victim died at the scene, CHP says. The car that hit the victim fled the scene. At this time, it’s unclear if drugs or alcohol were factors in either crash. 506

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local marine is recovering from COVID-19 while deployed overseas.Jennifer Dulaney says her husband, Kyle, was deployed in April and is serving at a base in Okinawa. He tested for COVID-19 earlier this month.“My husband called me on a Monday morning as I was getting ready for work and said he felt like he was getting symptoms,” Jennifer said.Kyle got worse and was eventually sent to the ICU. His condition began to worsen that he qualified for the Remdesivir. It was described as an experimental drug, and doctors needed Jennifer’s permission to administer it to Kyle.Jennifer is a nurse and knew that COVD-19 could be very severe.“I know where COVID can go, they can spiral downwards real fast,” she said, “so for me, the benefits outweighed the risk.”Jennifer said he began to show improvement on the fifth day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new California law aims to help thousands of low-income Californians gain access to fresh and healthy food.Seniors in California who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits will also be able to apply for CalFresh food benefits, formerly known as food stamps.SSI recipients are either over age 65, disabled, or blind. Up until recently, they couldn't apply for CalFresh benefits because they receive money for food in their check; however, it's just a month. "One of the challenges seniors face is the high cost of living, we can hardly make it with what we get," said Gwendolyn Joseph, a San Diegan who lives on a fixed income.Joseph just turned 76 and can finally apply for CalFresh benefits, despite receiving SSI benefits. The average CalFresh recipient receives 0 per month to purchase food."We are striving so hard in California to restore these kinds of safety net programs to our most vulnerable Californians, look around this room, these are people who've worked their entire lives, they deserve it, they've earned it, and they need our support now," said Senator Toni Atkins, who represents California Senate District 39.Feeding San Diego, in partnership with Serving Seniors, 211 San Diego, and the County of San Diego Health and Human Services, is working to spread the word and encourage SSI recipients to apply for CalFresh benefits.
