(KGTV) -- Many scientists and doctors are cautiously optimistic about taking a step forward in the fight against COVID-19 after encouraging news from Pfizer Monday.Pfizer announced that early data revealed its vaccine was more than 90 percent effective in protecting trial participants against the coronavirus. The U.S. Federal Food and Drug Admiration still needs to review the drug for safety and efficacy, and Pfizer plans to seek an Emergency Use Authorization this month, but regardless some see this as a good sign for other vaccine trials.“I think this is frankly the break we’ve all been waiting for, and I hope we have many others to follow,” said Dr. Susan Little, a UC San Diego Professor of Medicine.UCSD is participating in Phase 3 clinical trials for Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Janssen vaccines.Little leads the AstraZeneca and Janssen trials, which resumed locally last week.“I think what this means for all of the trials that are available at this stage, this is incredibly good news,” she said. “So far, they all use the same approach to vaccine development; they are all targeting the same protein, the spike protein, on the coronavirus.”She expects similar results to come from Moderna’s early data sometime this year.“The Pfizer and the Moderna both use the same vaccine platform, the same structure for their vaccine construct, so there’s every reason to be very optimistic the Moderna study might show similar results,” she said. “While the AstraZeneca and the Janssen use a different vaccine construct, they both are targeting the same protein.”If Pfizer’s vaccine is approved, it could be given to healthcare workers and high-risk populations in just months, and the general population in 2021, according to Pfizer.Pfizer said it expects to produce 50 million vaccine doses globally in 2020 and up to 1.3 billion in 2021.Pfizer’s CEO, Albert Bourla, said he expects the vaccine to be free of charge for Americans. 1943

(KGTV) -- The controversial immigrant caravan is inching it's way closer to the San Diego border, with at least 132 people already in Tijuana. Many of the migrants plan to walk across the pedestrian bridge in San Ysidro and turn themselves in to the customs officers. The group of more than 600 has ridden trains and walked for miles to get to the United States - Mexico border.  Enrique Morones and his team - known as Border Angels - are sending supplies to Tijuana. "The Border Angels have been very supportive, we've had people on the caravan, we have been collecting items for the caravan," he said. "These people that are coming on a caravan are escaping a situation in their country that they're seeking refuge from. Let's welcome that stranger. Give me your poor, your tired your huddled masses."Jorge Nieto, a journalist following the immigrants' journey, says they have been arriving in Tijuana in small groups - 50 to 100 at a time.Nieto was told that once the whole group is together, they'll cross all at once. The caravan hasn't been without controversy.President Trump tweeted this week, saying he instructed the secretary of homeland security to keep the large caravan out of the U.S., and asked Mexico to keep the immigrants from going through the Country. RELATED: Migrant caravan heads to US-Mexico border "They're trying to escape something. Either hunger or violence or some sort of a war that's going on," Nieto said. "One of the reasons that they go in caravans is there's a power in groups. If you go as a group, then you're more secure."San Diegans For Secure Borders, a local group against the caravan, plans to stop the caravan when they arrive. In a Facebook group they created, they say that the "mass foreign invasion" must be stopped. In 2014, the same group went to Murrietta to stop buses of immigrant detainees from Texas. We reached out to them several times to find out what they plan on doing this week but did not get a response.  2031

(KGTV) -- New guidance was issued Tuesday for the reopening of California’s theme parks and professional sporting events. The state’s guidance for theme parks:-- Smaller them parks may resume operation in Tier 3 (Moderate/Orange)Limited capacity of 25 percent or 500, whichever is fewerMay only open outdoor attractionsTicket sales limited to visitors in same county-- All theme parks may resume operation in Tier 5 (Yellow/Minimal)Limited capacity of 25 percent-- All theme parksImplement reservation system and screen guests for symptoms in advanceFace coverings mandatory throughout the park unless eating or drinkingFor professional sporting events at outdoor stadiums:-- May resume in Tier 3 (Moderate/Orange) at 20 percent and in Tier 4 (Minimal/Yellow) at 35 percent-- Ticket sales restricted to customers within 120 mile radius-- Advance ticket sales and assigned seats (No day of or will-call ticket sales)-- Eating and drinking in assigned seats only-- Face coverings are mandatory throughout the stadium unless eating or drinking-- Tailgaiting prohibited however parking at stadium is requiredIn a Tuesday virtual conference call, Dr. Mark Ghaly with the state's Public Health Department said the guidance for sporting events did not apply to collegiate athletics. Ghaly did not say when the state would offer guidelines for college sports at outdoor venues.Because San Diego County is in the state's red tier under the COVID-19 reopening plan, major theme parks within the county cannot open under the state guidelines.SeaWorld San Diego, however, is currently operating under the state's guidance for zoos.Kurt Stocks, president of Legoland California Resort, issued this statement regarding the guidelines:“The guidance issued today by the state is arbitrary and unacceptable to the industry. Not allowing theme parks to open until Tier 4 will destroy the industry in California and the economic impact to industries that rely heavily on theme parks will be catastrophic. The administration’s actions to this point have cost tens of thousands of jobs across the industry, and today’s announcement will all but confirm that thousands more will be lost. LEGOLAND? California Resort has developed a comprehensive and robust reopening plan, taking every precaution to meet and exceed guidelines given to other businesses and industries since voluntarily closing seven months ago. All seven other LEGOLAND Parks around the world have reopened safely with millions of guests and twenty thousand employees going through the gates without any COVID-19 incidents. The guidance from the Governor is grossly inconsistent with the guidelines given to other industries and lacks any scientific basis that can be supported by the CDPH.”In Orange and Los Angeles counties, Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood will have to wait longer to reopen because of their tier status. Orange County, as of Oct. 20, is in the state's red tier; Los Angeles County remains in the restrictive purple tier.Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock said of the guidance:“We have proven that we can responsibly reopen, with science-based health and safety protocols strictly enforced at our theme park properties around the world. Nevertheless, the State of California continues to ignore this fact, instead mandating arbitrary guidelines that it knows are unworkable and that hold us to a standard vastly different from other reopened businesses and state-operated facilities. Together with our labor unions we want to get people back to work, but these State guidelines will keep us shuttered for the foreseeable future, forcing thousands more people out of work, leading to the inevitable closure of small family-owned businesses, and irreparably devastating the Anaheim/Southern California community.” 3798

(WXYZ) — A dramatic deer rescue caught on video shows officers in Michigan save a buck trapped in a net.Officers Thomas Goodrose and Justin Wells came face-to-face with a 10-point buck trapped in the net of a soccer goal at Bingham Farms Elementary on Monday morning.Noticing how panicked the deer was, the quick-thinking officers used a tool from their vehicle to help control the deer's legs while cutting netting that had started to close around the animal's neck. “Once he had it secure, we came up slow. Held the horn and heard it breathe and relax,” said Officer Thomas Goodrose with Franklin police. “It felt really good. You don’t come across this too much but it was really cool.”In the video, you can see the deer realize the netting is no longer attached, and run back into the wilderness. (KGTV) - Online travel site TripAdvisor will no longer sell tickets to attractions that breed or buy dolphins and whales, including SeaWorld, company officials said Wednesday. TripAdvisor and its subsidiary Viator planned to phase out the tickets over the next few months. The new policy will not apply to seaside sanctuaries that provide care to cetaceans already in captivity, TripAdvisor officials said. “We believe the current generation of whales and dolphins in captivity should be the last, and we look forward to seeing this position adopted more widely throughout the travel industry,” said TripAdvisor Experiences and Rentals president Dermot Halpin. “TripAdvisor is on the right side of history,” said Dr. Naomi Rose, Marine Mammal Scientist, Animal Welfare Institute, in a release issued by the travel company. “Whales and dolphins cannot thrive in captivity and enlightened tourists no longer tolerate exploiting these intelligent and socially complex marine predators for human entertainment.” SeaWorld issued a statement in response to TripAdvisor’s decision. “We are disappointed by TripAdvisor’s new position that ignores the educational value and conservation mission of professionally accredited zoos and aquariums. SeaWorld believes deeply in the mission of these organizations. As a member of World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), certified by American Humane, and accredited by Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) and Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA), as well as numerous other certifications and accreditations from leading accrediting bodies, SeaWorld maintains the highest standards of care for all animals, including cetaceans. And regardless of TripAdvisor’s position, SeaWorld will continue to advance education and animal conservation efforts along with our millions of supporters, professional scientists and other science based organizations around the world.” said Dr. Chris Dold, SeaWorld’s Chief Zoological Officer. SeaWorld officials also referred to the support of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), a nonprofit accrediting body active in 12 countries. “TripAdvisor is letting voices of a radical minority dictate corporate policy, rather than listening to the voices and preferences of their customers,” said AZA president Dan Ashe. “Revenue generated at AZA facilities that care for dolphins and whales directly supports millions of dollars in animal welfare research, global conservation efforts, and critical rescue and rehabilitation activities, not the capture of cetaceans from the wild.” TripAdvisor created an animal welfare policy in 2016, banning ticket sales for experiences putting travelers into physical contact with captive wild animals, such as elephant rides. In 2018, the policy also expanded to what TripAdvisor described as “demeaning animal shows and performances.” 2878
