When new infections among young, black, gay men increase by nearly 50 percent in three years, we need to do more to show them that their lives matter.''Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, also told Xinhua recently that in the United States, the AIDS epidemic has plateaued, but it is still at "unacceptably high" level.About 1.2 million Americans are living with HIV and only 28 percent of them have the infection under control, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported this week."The fight is not over," Obama declared, but "the federal government can't do this alone." (HP) on Monday reported that its profit in the most recent quarter fell more than 90 percent with sales also declining.In the company's fourth quarter of fiscal 2011 ended Oct. 31, the company posted net earnings of 239 million U.S. dollars, compared with 2.54 billion dollars in the same period a year earlier.HP's net revenue for the quarter reached 32.1 billion dollars, down 3 percent year-on-year.Excluding one-time items, HP earned 1.17 dollars per share, which topped estimates of analysts.According to Thomson Reuters, analysts had expected earnings of 1.13 dollars per share on revenue of 32.05 billion dollars.It was the first earnings report since Meg Whitman took over as chief executive officer (CEO) of the information technology giant on Sept. 22, replacing Leo Apotheker."HP has a great opportunity to build on our strong hardware, software, and services franchises with leading market positions, customer relationships, and intellectual property," Whitman said in a statement after the earnings announcement."We need to get back to the business fundamentals in fiscal 2012, including making prudent investments in the business and driving more consistent execution," she added.

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Scientists have discovered that blind optimism is related to brain's frontal lobes which are associated with processing errors, according to a British study published Monday in the journal Nature Neuroscience.Scientists at the University College of London scanned brains of volunteers who were asked to estimate their personal likelihood of involving in negative events, like a divorce or cancer,  before and after given the average probability of these events occurring.They found that the volunteers who estimated lower probability (or the more optimistic ones) than the given one raised their estimates a little bit later while those estimated higher probability altered their estimates much more.Through the brain scanner, scientists saw there was less activity in the volunteers' frontal regions when the information given was worse than expected while more activity when the information was better than expected. It suggested that the more optimistic people neglected the negative predictions."The more optimistic we are, the less likely we are to be influenced by negative information about the future," said Dr. Tali Sharot, lead author of the study. He added being optimistic clearly had some benefits, "but it can also mean that we are less likely to take precautionary action, such as practising safe sex or saving for retirement. So why don't we learn from cautionary information?"
