WASHINGTON, May 3 (Xinhua) -- People diagnosed with asthma in the United States grew by 4.3 million between 2001 and 2009, according to a new report released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).In 2009, nearly one in 12 Americans were diagnosed with asthma. In addition to increased diagnoses, asthma costs grew from about 53 billion U.S. dollars in 2002 to about 56 billion dollars in 2007, about a six percent increase. It has helped rescue six children so far.However, the ministry noted in the statement that children kidnapped to become beggars took up only a small portion of all cases of child beggars. BEIJING, March 22 (Xinhua) -- China's State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) has ordered a "serious investigation" into two kinds of bath products that reportedly gave children skin diseases.The order came after recent reports accused the body wash and lotion used by bathhouse chain Tian Po Po Xi Jiu Tang, or, literally, "Grandma Tian's Bathhouse," in southwest China's Sichuan Province of having "caused severe body damages," according to a SFDA statement released Tuesday.The bathhouse chain, with a history of some 70 years, was first established in Sichuan's capital Chengdu and was listed as a part of the city's Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009.The licensed bathhouse claimed to use bath products developed by its own Chinese herbal medicine recipes that protected children from various skin ailments and other diseases, such as eczema, colds, and constipation.However, an unknown number of children suffered pustular psoriasis, a chronic skin irritation characterize by raised bumps, after washing at the bathhouse chain and using the two products, according to reports.Sichuan's provincial food and drug administration bureau previously deemed the two products to be "fake drugs" based on an initial investigation by the local police and food and drug authorities, the statement said.The SFDA urged local food and drug supervision departments across the country to monitor and check the two products sold by the bathhouse chain within their regions, and vowed to punish any violations of laws and regulations.

LOS ANGELES, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Clinical and teaching microbiology laboratories are linked with a nationwide salmonella outbreak in the United States that has killed one person and sickened dozens of others, health officials confirmed on Friday.Since August, about 73 people in 35 states have been sickened by salmonella bacteria, and some of those cases involve a strain of Salmonella typhimurium sold commercially to laboratories, officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in remarks published by msnbc.com.Illnesses have been tied to laboratories from Alaska to New York, with most reporting one or two cases. Five cases have been reported in Washington state and four in Minnesota.The first illness occurred late August and the most recent cases were reported March 8, according to the CDC.The patients include employees and students of the laboratories, as well as children in the homes of people who work or study at the labs.Patients ranged in age from less than one to 91, with a median age of 24, the CDC said.Cases that developed after March 19 may not yet be included in the total because of the lag time in assessing and reporting illness, said the report.CDC officials warned that bacteria used in the labs can be transmitted through contaminated lab coats, pens, notebooks, car keys and other items brought into the labs.The CDC is working with local and state health departments, the American Society for Microbiology and the Association of Public Health Laboratories to track the outbreak, the report said.Salmonella infections typically result in diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. They can be dangerous in very young children or people with compromised immune systems.
