#MeToo is changing American culture and putting weight behind a call for change. The concept built to a movement in 2017 when the New York Times published major allegations against producer Harvey Weinstein. The movement gained steam as more women came forward.Dr. Stefanie K. Johnson is an associate professor of management at the University of Colorado Boulder. She studies workplace sexual harassment against women, among other things, and says #MeToo was a case of strength in numbers.“So the first accuser is always doubted and blamed right?” Johnson explains. “'What was she wearing? What did she do? She has a history of bad behavior.' But when the tenth accuser comes forward with the exact same story, you don't doubt."Johnson and her team started a workplace sexual harassment study in 2016 before the #MeToo movement caught on.The team asked women about their experiences in 2016 and followed up in 2018.They found women reported experiencing fewer sexually harassing encounters at work during those years when compared to earlier studies. The study also found that workplace sexual harassment had less of an impact on womens’ self-esteem and self-worth during that time.Johnson says it could be because the victims knew they weren’t alone."I think most women started to feel like, 'well this isn't really something about me’ or it's something about all women, right?” Johnson says. She adds, “If so many people are experiencing sexual harassment then it can't be something that I did. Unless we all as a gender are doing the same behaviors to deserve it."Despite progress, Johnson says there’s a long way to go.Her study found an increase in gender-based harassment during the study period.“(In) men and women who might have previously sexually harassed ... instead, they know 'I’m not supposed to sexually harass people, this is a big topic' but they're still engaging in the same negative treatment of women,” Johnson says. The #MeToo movement is shifting American culture in other ways, too.A third of workers say it made them change their behavior at work, according to a recent Associated Press poll. The movement is also sparking legal changes to things like non-disclosure agreements.Movement leaders say they aren’t done sparking change. They want to amend federal laws and create protections for victims who come forward. 2350

A man opened fire outside a federal courthouse in Dallas on Monday before he was shot and killed by federal officers, authorities said.No officers or other citizens were injured in the shooting on the south side of the Earle Cabell Federal Building, police said. The gunman, identified as Brian Isaack Clyde, 22, was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead, according to FBI special agent in charge Matthew J. DeSarno.DeSarno said during a Monday afternoon press conference that Clyde was discharged from the Army in 2017. The FBI is working with the Department of Defense "to examine his record and identify any associates," DeSarno said. The shooter's firearm was also recovered and federal authorities are trying to trace the gun's origins and how the shooter obtained it.DeSarno also said the suspect had more than five 40-round magazines on him. Authorities don't believe he entered the courthouse, DeSarno said. 935

The coveted crash test ratings for vehicles are in desperate need of an update, according to multiple auto safety groups. The system hasn't been updated since 2010. Right now, 98% of all vehicles get four or five stars. “It’s the equivalent of Halloween — everyone gets candy,” says Jason Levine with the Center for Auto Safety. “The idea is supposed to be separating between things that are safe and things that are really safe.” Levine says the tests are too easy to pass and they don't help consumers understand the difference between cars. Some recommendations include updating the ratings by testing new technology that helps drivers avoid crashes, like emergency automatic braking, and accounting for how passengers in the rear seats are impacted Experts also recommend testing systems that help avoid hitting pedestrians. This type of testing already exists, it just hasn't been mandated in the U.S. “NHSTA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, has dragged its feet on renewing these ratings for almost a decade now,” Levine says. “They said they were going to update them in 2015. They didn't. They said they were going to update them in 2018 and they didn't. Here we are, we just saw a press release of NHSTA saying we'll do something in 2020 but they haven't even really explained what that is.” Advocates also say there's a need to update crash test dummies to reflect changes we've seen in drivers, like weight, height and age.Auto safety groups would like to see a silver star added for older drivers to better understand how a car might protect them in a crash. 1604

There are growing safety concerns about Boeing's best-selling plane, following a second crash involving the plane in less than five months. On Sunday, 157 people died, including 8 Americans, after a Boeing 737 MAX 8 crashed in Ethiopia. In October, 189 died when the same kind of plane crashed into the sea off Indonesia. Investigators are now looking into the similarities. Both jets were Boeing 737 MAX 8s, and both flights crashed shortly after take-off. Pilots on both flights and tried returning to the airport prior to crashing. “Absolutely there are concerns, and the alarms should be and are going off all throughout the aviation industry,” says Mary Schiavo, a former inspector general of the U.S. Department of Transportation. The crashes remain under investigation, and it's not known if any of the same factors contributed to either crash. But out of caution, China and Indonesia have grounded the planes. Some foreign airlines have also suspended the use of the planes. In the U.S., American and Southwest airlines both use the 737 Max 8 planes but are still flying them. “For as long as the airlines continue flying the planes, it's because they feel it's safe,” says aviation expert Seth Kaplan. “There's so much risk here. Not just for safety, but for their businesses.” Today, Boeing issued a statement saying, in part, "… based on the information available, we do not have any basis to issue new guidance to operators." Still, nervous fliers in the U.S. are sharing their concerns on social media about their fears of flying on the plane. “You cannot blame people for being concerned,” Kaplan says. “On the other hand, you do have a U.S. airline industry that's as safe as it's ever been.”Investigators recovered the black box and data recorders in the latest crash and hope to get early clues into what may have happened. 1854
