COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Scientists say an enormous chunk of Greenland's ice cap, estimated to be about 110 square kilometers (42.3 square miles), has broken off in the far northeastern Arctic. They see it as evidence of rapid climate change, which is leading to the disintegration of the Arctic's largest remaining ice shelf. The section broke off a 50-mile long fjord at the front end of the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream, where it flows off the land and into the ocean. CINCINNATI (WCPO) -- Police officers who investigated an apartment building in Cincinnati, Ohio Sunday left "deeply disturbed" by what they saw there: Duct tape, shoelaces and socks that had been used to bind and gag a pair of 4-year-old twin boys in an abusive form of discipline, according to Det. Janette Vaughn."(The officers) just felt so emotionally disturbed by what they saw," Fraternal Order of Police president Sgt. Dan Hils said Monday. "It's so unique and remarkable that it took very veteran, very seasoned, inner-city police officers to say, 'Wow, this is unbelievable.'"The boys' father, 26-year-old James Howell and his 30-year-old girlfriend, Jamie Carver, both stand charged with multiple counts of child endangering and kidnapping. A third adult, 30-year-old Rowdy Warren, was charged with obstructing official business after police discovered he had also been present in the apartment where the abuse took place.The boys were moved to a foster family while their guardians stand trial, Vaughn said."It just makes you wonder what frame of mind they were in," Phil Harris, who works near the scene, said. "Are they on drugs? I just don't understand people that could harm children."According to Hils, officers began collecting donations within the department for the boys.Kidnapping and child endangering are both felony offenses. (CNS) -- The Orange County Board of Education voted 4-1 Monday evening to recommend opening schools next month without masks to protect against the spread of coronavirus but the decision is not binding on any of the county's districts."There has been some confusion, and understandably so, over the role of the OC Board of Education and our agency, the Orange County Department of Education," Orange County Department of Education Superintendent Al Mijares said in a statement before the meeting."Locally elected school boards and superintendents will approve and implement plans specific to their districts based on the needs of their schools and communities," Mijares said.The county's education department "is working to support districts in that effort, and we remain 100% committed to following and sharing the guidance of the California Department of Public Health and the Orange County Health Care Agency," Mijares added.Mijares said the county's education department guide to reopening schools "is in alignment with the California Department of Public Health, which stresses the importance of social distancing and face coverings when social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.The board held a meeting last month with experts who concluded in a white paper that requiring students to wear masks "is not only difficult, but may even be harmful over time."The experts also concluded that "social distancing of children and reduction of classroom size and census may be considered, but not vital to implement for school aged children," and advised that parents "are in the best position to determine the education environment that best suits their children rather than government officials."If a school district "is unable or unwilling to reopen schools in a manner that resumes a typical classroom environment and school atmosphere, parents should be allowed to send their children to another school district or charter school that will provide that preferred education," the experts wrote."In fact, many parents stated they will opt for private schools or home schooling if their child does not have a typical interactive academic classroom environment."The experts advised regular temperature checks, encouraged "good hygiene with frequent hand washing and the use of hand sanitizer," as well as the cleaning of classrooms, meeting rooms, buses and administrative offices nightly.The panel downplayed the infectiousness and impact COVID-19 among children, and concluded that teachers are more at risk of getting sick from another teacher or staff member than they are from children.One of the listed experts, Dr. Steven Abelowitz, issued a statement saying his comments were "either misunderstood or misinterpreted." Now, some of these companies are getting creative with hiring during the pandemic."This is about actionality and giving everyone whatever ways that are necessary to them to be able to find work. Our teams have been trying to come up with creative ways to connect people and work," said Carl Schweihs, the president of PeopleManagement at TrueBlue, a national staffing company that helps businesses, big and small.Schweihs says their team decided to try out a drive-thru hiring event. TrueBlue is running the events through its Staff Management |SMX business."We did one of these in April in Pennsylvania, and we saw a lot of success, so we were able to hire about as many people in one day as we had done in a week in the past," said Schweihs.The company saw so much success that True Blue decided to offer the drive-thru service to other clients, as well."We saw a lot of people were interested in it. They weren’t used to necessarily video interviewing and there was a comfort factor in still being close to someone, still being able to ask questions, that just weren’t there on the video side," explained Schweihs.How it works is applicants fill out all of their information ahead of time online. Then, True Blue schedules certain times for people to drive up and interview through their car window. Schweihs says they're able to interview more candidates in less time."Another thing is, we do interviews on all of our jobs and I think it also shows, especially in warehousing and distribution jobs attendance is a big issue, so by people being able to show up to an interview at a scheduled time, it also gives comfort in us and our customers that they're going to show up and be in attendance when they actually do take the job," said Schweihs.Drive-thru hiring is gaining ground across the country. In California, the Tulare County Employment Connection is hosting its first drive-thru event to fill 40 electrical and solar installation positions."I'm a little bit old fashioned. I like the face-to-face, and I know a lot of people do. Just the safety matter of it right now during the pandemic, following safety guidelines, I think it's a very good idea to be able to drive through and make it quick, where there's not very much contact, but at the same time, you're having that face to face with employers," said Monica Andrade, a business resource specialist with Tulare County Employment Connection.Andrade says employers will also have an opportunity to have a more in-depth interview with some candidates by having the candidate pull over and conduct a socially distant interview outside in a separate area. Considered the coronavirus holy grail, antibodies are believed to give us some level of immunity from the virus. They form after a person fights off COVID-19 and can be detected through a serological test, better known as an antibody test. "There are some really great companies building antibody tests, and there are some not so great, bad actors, building antibody tests. So you have to be really careful," says Jon Carder, co-founder and CEO of Vessel, a San Diego company created four years ago to provide in-home wellness tests. Early in the pandemic, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration allowed these tests to be sold and distributed without federal review, as long as the company notified the FDA it was offering a test, performed self-validation studies, and included a disclaimer on the test results. The FDA is now cracking down on the bad actors, creating a list of tests that should no longer be distributed. Only a handful of manufacturers have been granted FDA Emergency Use Authorization, meeting a certain threshold for accuracy.Carder says states and even countries have been fooled by the bad actors, purchasing inadequate tests. "We were talking to a city government, a big city, and were blown away when we got a response that they were thinking about buying antibody tests from a certain manufacture who had claimed they were FDA approved. And the state had sort of taken their word for it, and they weren't," said Carder. Vessel had been preparing to release its in-home wellness tracker, which tests for health markers like vitamins, minerals, toxins, and cortisol. When the pandemic hit, the company adapted its technology to be used in the fight against COVID-19. "We take existing antibody tests, the good ones, the ones that are accurate and that the FDA has approved for emergency use, and we enable those to be done safely and accurately at home," said Carder. They've created a kit with step-by-step instructions to do the blood test at home. The test card is then scanned through the Vessel app and provides results from a medical professional within a half-hour. The FDA has already approved in-home tests to diagnose active infections – but Carder says the sample must be sent to a lab, and the user must have symptoms or another qualification to get one. And he says they can be costly. "Ours could be one of the first, or the first, antibody test done at home, no lab needed," said Carder. Just this week, the FDA issued three warning letters to companies making false claims on their in-home antibody tests.Vessel has completed its usability studies and is now in clinical trials with the FDA. "Our job is to prove it can be done safely at home and to show that via clinical trials. The FDA really makes the call if they're going to enable antibody testing at home," said Carder. He says the test would be cost-effective, anywhere from -, or around with medical consultation. If approved by the FDA, Carder estimates millions of people could be tested within the first few months. "There's something really great about the peace-of-mind that comes from doing a test, and that may be one of the biggest benefits," said Carder. But while the FDA is only approving the most accurate tests, none are 100 percent accurate and could still lead to false positives. 3314
