The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has cleared the Boeing 737 Max to return to the skies, The Associated Press reports.The plane has been grounded in the U.S. since March 2019 after it was involved in two deadly crashes just months after initial orders for the model had been fulfilled. The two crashes — one which occurred in Africa, the other in Asia — killed a combined 346 people.In Congressional hearings last September, Boeing officials say the plane's software included a fatal flaw that caused a nosedive in certain situations.In addition to the human cost of the software error, the Boeing 737 Max has proven to be malignant for Boeing's business. According to CNN, Boeing says the grounding of the 737 Max has resulted in billion in direct costs. Boeing's stock fell 100 points between March 2019 and January 2020 — a massive loss even before the COVID-19 pandemic dragged the entire market down with historic losses. "These 20 months they took to look at every possible issue with the aircraft is more than enough time to make it safe to go back in the air," said Kevin Kuhlmann, an Aviation and Aerospace Science Professor at Metro State University. "It's no small undertaking to go through and develop this training, put the pilots through the training and absorb the cost of the training."In October, American Airlines announced it would begin using the plane on certain routes in late December, pending FAA approval. The Florida recount deadline passed on Thursday afternoon with at least one of the state's largest counties unable to complete the task.Florida law stipulates that any races with margins outside 0.25% can now be certified by law. Races that are still within that range will head to a manual recount of overvotes and undervotes to be completed by Sunday at noon.Election boards in every Florida county have been using voting machines to recount ballots this week, with some of the larger counties working all day and night. There are currently three statewide races -- the contests between Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson and Republican Gov. Rick Scott for Senate; Democratic Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum and Republican former Rep. Ron DeSantis for governor; Republican Matt Caldwell and Democrat Nikki Fried for agriculture commissioner -- that were within the .5% margin required for a statewide machine recount.The fiery race between DeSantis and Gillum is the most likely to come to a formal end. The Republican led by roughly 33,000 votes after the initial count. Gillum, who conceded the race on election night before taking back his concession a few days later, tweeted on Wednesday, "I believe that we win," hinting that he believes the gap could narrow. But there is no evidence yet that he made up enough ground to extend the fight.The two other contests are significantly closer and appear likely to head to a hand recount. The Equifax data breach was bad for a lot of people but good for a few companies that sell identity theft protection.The hack, which Equifax announced last Thursday, exposed Social Security numbers, drivers licenses and other personal information of 143 million people. And that was just in the United States.Equifax said people in the U.K. and Canada were also affected by the data breach, but it hasn't said how many. Equifax says it has records on more than 800 million people worldwide.Demand for identity theft protection just went up. A lot.One company, LifeLock says it has gotten over 100,000 customer signups since the Equifax news broke. It said it's enrolling 10 times as many customers every hour now as a result.The Equifax breach was not the largest ever, but it was notable for the kind of information that was put at risk.LifeLock says its increase in business is greater than it was after two other big breaches -- an attack on Yahoo last year and one in 2015 against insurance giant Anthem."We've had more people sign up for LifeLock in the past three days than during the entire Yahoo or Anthem breaches," Fran Rosch, executive VP and GM of Symantec's consumer business unit, told CNN Tech on Monday.LifeLock sells identity protection like credit monitoring, black market surveillance, stolen fund reimbursements, crimes committed in your name, and fake identity monitoring. Its service costs between .99 to .99 a month.Another company that says it has seen an uptick in business is CreditKarma, which provides free credit reports and monitoring. It clarified this week that those who sign up will not be automatically renewed and charged.Of course, a year of the TrustedID service for free could be enough to convince some customers to renew and start paying."They can exploit this breach to market to consumers who never had to worry about their credit report before," said Amanda Werner, campaign manager with Americans for Financial Reform and Public Citizen.Equifax did not respond to a request for comment for this article.Experts warn that one year is not enough to cover the damage caused by the breach on consumers."Criminals will certainly try to monetize the leaked data and perform ID theft for far longer than one year after this attack," Katie Moussouris, founder of Luta Security, told CNN Tech.Bill Kowlaski, director of operations at Rehmann Corporate Investigative Services and a former FBI agent, agrees.
