WASHINGTON (AP) — For the first time in Marine Corps history, women are attending a previously male-only combat training course in California.Marine Capt. Joshua Pena said 40 female Marine students checked-in Tuesday to the Marine Combat Training Battalion at Camp Pendleton. The move comes at least seven months after senior Marine leaders said they were considering the change, amid criticism that much of the early training excludes women. The entry-level course is for Marines who've finished boot camp and aren't assigned to infantry jobs. It lasts about a month and involves basic combat training, including patrol and convoy operations, marksmanship and the use of grenade launchers and machine guns.Pena said the female Marines will be fully integrated with the men, and that their inclusion triggered no changes to the course instruction. He said that eventually as many as 1,700 women would go through the combat training there each year.Currently Marine boot camp on the West Coast is only for male recruits. Women attend boot camp at Parris Island in South Carolina, where they are separated from the men for portions of the training. Congress members have been critical of that policy, and the Corps has been reviewing it.Until now, half of the Marine Corps' male recruits would go through their initial training on the West Coast where they had no female colleagues. A key reason for the limits is the shortage of female recruits. Women make up just 8.7 percent of the Corps. But Marine leaders have been eyeing changes with the belief that giving the men greater exposure to women recruits during training could foster better relations and greater respect over time. 1686

"With this change, we will continue the health and safety measures currently in place, such as social distancing, health screenings, plastic barriers at the registers and masks."In March, store hours had been shortened due to the coronavirus pandemic. 884

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Californians are getting ready for a new set of businesses to reopen after June 12, 2020. Last Friday, the state released specific COVID-19 guidelines for several industries, including gyms, bars, and hotels. Vista Fitness owner Brian Belasco is setting up cones in his parking lot to create social distancing spots for his patrons. He's doing this well in advance of the state's gym reopenings on June 12."Being able to reopen means the world to us," Belasco said. Last Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom released specific guidelines for the next group of industries allowed to reopen with modifications, no sooner than June 12, 2020. They include gyms, schools, film production, professional sports, bars and wineries, hotels, cardrooms, family entertainment, museums, and zoos. Since mid-March, Belasco said his trainers have been successfully teaching online workout classes. "We just finished a virtual challenge," Belasco said. "We had members losing up to 30 pounds in 28 days."But he said he is ready to see his members in person. "It's the camaraderie, especially times like right now, bringing people together that is our specialty," Belasco said. That is why he says he is implementing many of the State's new gym guidelines, which include:Limiting the number of members insideConducting temperature and health screenings upon entryStaggering lockers and machinesProviding disinfecting wipes or gel for hands and equipment No sharing water bottles or towelsWearing masksFor weeks, Belasco has been practicing these guidelines already with his coaches and volunteers. "They get called in one by one, temperature check, foot bath, hand sanitizer, and then they get pointed to their station, and they're all spread out in this room," Belasco said as he pointed at the mat in the middle of the gym. So when June 12 rolls around, Belasco said the new guidelines will seem like old news. "We've been ready. We've been researching. We have all of the supplies, and we are ready to go," Belasco said proudly. All businesses in this category will require the San Diego County Public Health Officer's approval before they can reopen. WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health officials warned parents Wednesday about the dangers of teething remedies that contain a popular numbing ingredient and asked manufacturers to stop selling their products intended for babies and toddlers. The Food and Drug Administration said that various gels and creams containing the drug benzocaine can cause rare but deadly side effects in children, especially those 2 years and younger. The agency has been warning about the products for a decade but said reports of illnesses and deaths have continued. Now, it wants teething products off the market, noting there is little evidence they actually work."We urge parents, caregivers and retailers who sell them to heed our warnings and not use over-the-counter products containing benzocaine for teething pain," said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, in a statement. One major manufacturer, Church and Dwight Co. Inc., said Wednesday it would discontinue its four Orajel teething brands, including Baby Orajel and Orajel Medicated Teething Swabs. The FDA said it will take legal action against other companies that don't voluntarily comply as soon as possible.Benzocaine is also used in popular over-the-counter products for toothaches and cold sores in adults, including Orajel and Anbesol and generic drugstore brands. Products for adults can remain on the market but the FDA wants companies to add new warnings. Church and Dwight will continue to sell its other Orajel products, the company said in a statement.Benzocaine can cause a rare blood condition linked to potentially deadly breathing problems. The pain-relieving ingredient can interfere with an oxygen-carrying protein in the blood. Symptoms include shortness of breath, headache and rapid heart rate. The American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend teething creams because they usually wash out of the baby's mouth within minutes. Instead, the group recommends giving babies teething rings or simply massaging their gums to relieve pain. The FDA issued warnings about the teething products in 2006, 2011 and 2014, but it did not call for their removal from the market. Officials reviewed 119 cases of the blood disorder linked to benzocaine between 2009 and 2017, including four deaths, according to the FDA.Wednesday's action comes more than four years after the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen petitioned the FDA to stop sales of teething products. The agency faced a deadline next week after Public Citizen sued the FDA to force a response to the petition. 2526
WASHINGTON — After months of on-again, and off-again negotiations, a bipartisan economic stimulus deal appears to be on the horizon. While nothing is official, optimism swept Capitol Hill Wednesday that something could be passed by the end of the week. The bill would not only provide economic relief but also keep the government open through 2021. Funding for the federal government officially runs out Friday night at midnight. STIMULUS CHECKS INCLUDED The biggest news is that stimulus checks appear to be included in the bill. While nothing is confirmed, Republican Senator John Thune of South Dakota told reporters that the checks would be around 0-0 per person, which is about half as much as last time. Whether or not you are eligible for a stimulus check will likely depend on your income, just like last time. WHEN COULD YOU GET IT? If Congress is able to pass a bill by Friday night, checks could theoretically be deposited into millions of accounts by New Year's Eve. That's because unlike last time, the IRS has already built the computer program to distribute checks and staffers have experience. This is what Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said back in August about how quickly he could send out the checks. "I can have them out immediately," Mnuchin said. "If I could get that passed tomorrow. I could start printing them the following week," Mnuchin told reporters at the White House in August. "I can get out 50 million payments immediately," Mnuchin added. Just like last time, if the federal government does not have your bank information on file, debit cards and paper checks would likely take several more weeks. 1651
