SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of fatally stabbing a 65-year-old clerk inside an adult bookstore in the Midway District pleaded not guilty Friday to felony murder charges that could lead to the death penalty if he's convicted.Shaun Ward, 39, was non-responsive and kept his head down during his arraignment. He was ordered held without bail in the death of 65-year-old Diane Spagnuolo.Ward refused to answer questions from Judge Maureen Hallahan about his true name or date of birth.The judge read Ward his constitutional rights and his attorney entered the not guilty plea for him.Ward was charged with murder and special circumstance allegations that the murder was committed during a robbery and that the murder involved the infliction of torture.District Attorney Summer Stephan will decide later if Ward will face life in prison without the possibility of parole or capital punishment if he's found guilty.The victim was found dead inside the X Spot Adult Store on Midway Drive on Monday afternoon, according to San Diego police. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who went on a South Bay crime spree that included shooting at a moving vehicle and ramming an occupied San Diego police vehicle during a pursuit was sentenced Thursday to 19 years in state prison.Alfonso Ayala Flores, 26, pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges of assault with a semi-automatic firearm and resisting arrest for a series of crimes last November that culminated in him driving toward officers who cornered him in a cul-de-sac and ramming a patrol car.One officer opened fire on the pickup truck Flores was driving, striking the truck, but not Flores.He was also given a separate 16-month sentence for an unrelated burglary case, but that term will be served concurrently with his 19-year prison term.The spree began with Flores carjacking a motorist's Ford F-150 pickup at the Frontier Motel in San Ysidro on Nov. 6. Deputy District Attorney Mary Naoom said that on the following day, Flores shot at an occupied vehicle.Two days later, he sped off when San Diego police spotted him driving the stolen truck in the 1900 block of Dairy Mart Road in San Ysidro. The suspect, who had a female companion in the truck with him, fled west, where he wound up at the end of a cul-de-sac in the Nestor neighborhood.As officers got out of their cars and shouted at him to halt, Flores made a U-turn and accelerated toward them, prompting one of the officers to open fire, police and prosecutors said.Naoom said Flores rammed the patrol car with the pickup as he sped away, with police again in pursuit. The subsequent chase ended in the 1200 block of Holly Avenue in Imperial Beach, where he pulled over and ran off along with the woman, according to Sainz.His companion was quickly apprehended and questioned by police before being released. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist who fled from officers near Hoover High School Wednesday led police on a meandering, roughly 45-minute road chase, running stoplights and driving the wrong way on one-way streets before pulling over near Lindbergh Field and making a failed attempt to escape on foot.The man drove off when patrol personnel approached him at about 12:15 p.m. to check on his welfare in response to a report that he appeared distraught while sitting in a white Chevrolet Malibu parked in the 4400 block of El Cajon Boulevard in the Teralta East area, according to San Diego police.The fleeing motorist, whose name was not immediately available, traveled over various mid-city streets before heading west on University Avenue through City Heights, North Park and Hillcrest.Early on in the chase, the driver ran over a spike strip laid out by police in his path, winding up with at least one flat tire on his car, Officer Tony Martinez said.After crisscrossing streets near Scripps Mercy Hospital, the man -- who appeared to be talking on a cellphone throughout the pursuit -- headed south on Fifth Avenue, driving against light traffic on the one-way northbound thoroughfare.Reaching downtown San Diego, the motorist crisscrossed the busy urban center for about 15 minutes, often driving at slow speeds, blowing through red lights and traveling in the wrong direction on one-way streets as police cruisers and an SDPD helicopter tailed him and officers placed more spike strips ahead of him.Eventually, he proceeded west through the Cortez Hill and Little Italy districts on B Street, then north on Pacific Highway, at one point driving onto a sidewalk to evade the pursuing police personnel.Just after 1 p.m., the fleeing man drove into a car-rental lot near San Diego International Airport, pulled over, jumped out of his vehicle and ran off into a parking garage.Officers gave chase and got the man into custody following a brief struggle, police said.No injuries were reported. 1998

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A mosquito caught in routine trapping in the Black Mountain Ranch area has tested positive for West Nile virus, the first appearance of the virus in San Diego County in 2020.County environmental health officials remind people to protect themselves from mosquitoes, which can potentially transmit, disease by following the county's "Prevent, Protect, Report" guidelines -- including finding and dumping out standing water in yards and around homes to keep mosquitoes from breeding.Incidences of West Nile virus were mild in San Diego County in 2019. Three people tested positive, but there were no fatalities and all three people were suspected of having contracted the virus while outside the county.However, West Nile virus remains a potentially deadly threat in San Diego County and the state, officials said. In 2015, 44 San Diego County residents tested positive for West Nile virus and six died. In 2019, 225 California residents became sick from West Nile virus and six died, according to the California Department of Public Health.West Nile virus is mainly a bird disease, but it can be transmitted to humans by a number of species of mosquitoes -- including Culex mosquitoes native to San Diego and, less effectively, by invasive Aedes aegypti mosquitoes also found in the county -- if they feed off an infected animal, mainly birds, and then bite people.Eight out of 10 people who get infected never suffer any symptoms. The 20% who do generally suffer mild symptoms including headache, fever, nausea, fatigue, skin rash or swollen glands. But in rare cases, West Nile virus can make people extremely ill and even kill them.Protecting against mosquitoes has become even more important for San Diego County residents in recent years. Since 2014, three types of day-biting, invasive Aedes mosquitoes have been found in the county. All of these mosquitoes tend to live and breed near people, in yards and even inside homes.Two of these species can potentially transmit diseases not naturally found here. Those include chikungunya, dengue and Zika -- but only if mosquitoes first bite an infected person. In general, that means local invasive Aedes mosquitoes could only transmit those diseases if they found and bit San Diego County residents who picked up the virus while traveling and returned home still infected.San Diego County residents may be more vulnerable to being bitten by mosquitoes around their homes now because many have been spending more time at home because of the coronavirus pandemic. Environmental health officials remind people to dump out or remove any item inside or outside of homes that can hold water, such as plant saucers, rain gutters, buckets, garbage cans, toys, old tires and wheelbarrows.Mosquito fish, available for free by contacting the Vector Control Program, may be used to control mosquito breeding in backyard water sources such as stagnant swimming pools, ponds, fountains and horse troughs.Wear long sleeves and pants or use insect repellent when outdoors. Use insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535. Make sure screens on windows and doors are in good condition and secured to keep insects out.Report increased mosquito activity, or stagnant, green swimming pools and other mosquito-breeding sources, as well as dead birds -- crows, ravens, jays, hawks and owls -- to environmental health's Vector Control Program by calling 858-694-2888 or emailing vector@sdcounty.ca.gov. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man stabbed his housemate to death in Chula Vista two years ago, then stuffed the victim's body into a barrel that he and another man dumped into San Diego Bay, a prosecutor alleged Tuesday, while defense attorneys maintained that the evidence against their clients was entirely circumstantial. Timothy John Cook, 54, is charged with the Sept. 30, 2017, murder of Omar Medina, 28, and co-defendant Derrick Spurgeon, 40, is charged with being an accessory for allegedly driving the boat used to dump the victim's body, which was located 12 days later inside the barrel, which had been weighed down by a makeshift anchor made of wire and cinderblocks. Medical examiners said Medina had been stabbed more than 60 times in the chest, back, neck and head. RELATED: Man whose body was found in a barrel had been stabbed 66 times; suspect pleads not guiltyDeputy District Attorney Cherie Somerville said in her opening statement that Medina and Cook both worked at a scaffolding business for Cook's younger brother and were living together at a home in Chula Vista. In a text exchange with his brother, Cook expressed annoyance with Medina over his drinking and sloppy household behavior, leading Cook to eventually kick him out of the house, according to the prosecutor. Sommerville also noted that Medina had recently come into a substantial amount of money via an ,000 settlement he received in a lawsuit. Medina's family never heard from him after Sept. 30, and filed a missing person's report soon afterward with Chula Vista police. Medina's unlocked car was found about a week later on Oaklawn Avenue, not far from the home he shared with Cook on McIntosh Street. Numerous belongings, including his computer and guitar were inside the vehicle. Defense attorney Kara Oien countered in her opening statement that there was no hard physical evidence tying Cook to Medina's death, and told jurors the district attorney was relying on circumstantial evidence to come to a false conclusion that her client killed Medina. The attorney said the prosecution lacked a murder weapon and witnesses to the murder, which allegedly occurred during the daytime hours of Sept. 30 at the Chula Vista home. Oien said Cook's agitation over Medina's sloppiness was far from indicative of a motive to kill and that Cook would have tried to get closer to Medina if he really wanted his settlement money, rather than kicking him out of their house. Surveillance footage allegedly captures the men in a green Ford F-150 owned by Cook's half-brother, which is seen towing Spurgeon's boat from El Cajon to the bay. Somerville alleged that a barrel matching the one containing Medina's body can be seen in the bed of the pickup in the footage. She also said a search of the McIntosh Street home yielded additional indications that Cook was covering up the murder, such as removal of his home's kitchen sink and stripping down Medina's room, which was located in an attached building on the property. Oien said Cook was merely fixing up the home, and that he had an agreement with his landlord to make occasional repairs in exchange for lower rent. Spurgeon's attorney, Roland Haddad, said there was no evidence that his client had any knowledge of assisting Cook of disposing Medina's body, if Cook even committed the murder at all. The men exchanged phone calls on Oct. 11, but Haddad said there was no evidence regarding what discussions they had over the phone, nor what was said on the alleged boat ride when Medina's body was dumped into the water. 4056
