SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Zoo Safari Park's youngest southern white rhino began integrating with the rest of the park's rhino herd Wednesday, meeting a rhino other than his mother for the first time since his birth 10 weeks ago.Edward and his mother, Victoria, have remained sequestered from the rest of the herd since his birth in July to allow the two to bond and ensure he builds weight and stamina. The calf's weight has nearly quadrupled since then and he has only entered the Safari Park's rhino enclosure with Victoria.Edward met Helene, an adult female southern white rhino, after she sparred with Victoria, who was very protective of her calf, according to the zoo's animal care staff. "It's time to get Edward acclimated to his crash. We chose to have Helene meet him first, as she is closely bonded with Victoria."Edward is the 99th southern white rhino calf born at the Safari Park and the first such calf to be born through artificial insemination in North America. His birth represents a step toward the zoo's longer-term goal of recovering the northern white rhino, a distant relative of the southern white rhino. Only two northern white rhinos still exist on the planet and both are female.Zoo officials plan to use stem cells and preserved northern white rhino cells to birth a northern white rhino calf within 10-20 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A College Area homeowner got a huge shock when he returned home from a camping trip: The presence of some uninvited guests.Bill Yogerst left Saturday at 12 p.m. from his home on Catoctin Drive. On Monday morning, he got a call from his roommate, who had also been out of town, telling him the grates on the outside of the granny flat had been damaged.     Inside the house, there was one disturbing discovery after another.    "There was a trail of dirt in the shower. They had urinated on the toilet. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Unified School District announced plans Thursday to offer voluntary in-person learning sessions for elementary school students identified as experiencing learning loss.While the district is preparing to open its 2020-21 school year Monday for remote, online learning for all students, some children who have faced learning challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic may be offered appointments to take part in the in-person sessions, which could begin as soon as late September, according to the district.Sessions will be held in spaces "with adequate air exchange, including MERV-13 air filters and/or portable ventilation units," according to the district.Students will be identified by their teachers for participation based on several factors:-- Below standard, represented by an average academic mark of a 1 or 2 in Math or English Language Arts strands on their Spring 2020 report card-- Students who do not have a Spring 2020 report card (incoming TK, K or new students to the district) and do not make progress toward grade-level standards once schools open-- Special education students not meeting their IEP goals-- Special education students with intense support needs-- Students who have been recommended for an initial assessment for an IEP or require a triennial assessment, and require standardized assessment that cannot be completed online for eligibility"We remain committed to following the science in designing our response to the COVID-19 crisis, including all of the recommendations we received from our expert panel of UCSD science and health professionals that included a phased return to in-person instruction," said District Superintendent Cindy Marten."This is Phase One, which provides a measured approach to address the very real problem with learning loss, faced by our most disadvantaged students, while maintaining the strict standards put in place to protect the health and safety of all students, staff and community," Marten said."Online learning has created new challenges for every student. It is tremendously encouraging that the virus has receded enough to begin phase one of that effort. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A car crashed Monday afternoon into the front of a Pacific Beach 7-Eleven, destroying a portion of the store.According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the incident happened near Cass Street and Loring Street.Crews said the elderly man who was driving hit the gas instead of the brakes, and the car slammed through a window of the convenience store up to its windshield.The driver, customers, and the clerk working at the counter were not hurt.The car also missed the propane tanks stored in a metal cage outside the store.
