INDIANAPOLIS -- Warren Township, Indiana Schools says no students or teachers were seriously injured Wednesday when pepper spray was released inside a middle school.Medical responders were called to Stonybrook Middle School and Stonybrook Intermediate Academy around 2 p.m. Wednesday for a report of more than a dozen people affected in an apparent pepper spray release.According to Warren Township Schools, a student released the pepper spray inside the building – although it was not immediately clear whether the release was accidental.A district spokesman said 15 students and two teachers were affected by the pepper spray. All were checked out and released on scene by EMS.The school was temporarily evacuated following the incident and was back to normal conditions as of 2:30 p.m., the district said.School police were reportedly examining surveillance footage to determine how the pepper spray was released. 934
INDIANAPOLIS — Two Indiana veterans are raising concerns publicly about the Military Family Relief Fund, a fund that helps veterans get emergency help with food, housing, utilities, medical services and transportation.When you purchase a veteran license plate or a Support the Troops plate, a chunk of that money goes into the Military Family Relief Fund.The Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs administers the fund, and it says on their website that veterans and their families can get up to ,500.“Grants up to ,500 may be awarded,” reads the website. “The qualified individual or family member can receive up to ,500 one time from the Family Relief Fund.” Lisa Wilken, an Air Force veteran and veterans advocate, told WRTV someone contacted her with state records that show some people are getting beyond the ,500 limit.“I was very shocked,” said Wilken. “The big deal is ... the rules are the rules. Anytime it’s beyond that limit, that’s a misuse of that fund.”The records shared with WRTV show several of the people who received more than the ,500 include employees of the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs and the Military Family Relief Fund itself.“Employees at IDVA have been able to get this fund above ,500 where veterans around the state have been denied that opportunity,” said Wilken.Since 2016, IDVA has denied 799 applications to the Military Family Relief Fund.During that time frame, 3,971 applications have been approved.William Henry, an Army veteran and former adjutant of the American Legion, is also concerned about the inconsistency of how the fund is distributed to veterans in need."Those documents show potential misuse with the Military Family Relief Fund," said Henry. “To me, it looked very suspicious and called a lot of things into question and I thought immediately it needed to be looked into.”Henry said the American Legion asked him to resign when he pushed for the Indiana Inspector General to investigate IDVA and the Military Family Relief Fund."That's what it comes down to, doing the right thing,” said Henry. “Even though I lose a job. It's been several hours since Hurricane Laura made landfall, but the storm is still delivering devastating gusts of wind to inland Louisiana.In it's 4 a.m. CT update, the National Hurricane Center downgraded Laura from a Category 4 hurricane to a Category 3 hurricane. But the storm is still delivering maximum sustained winds of 120 mph, and "unsurvivable storm surge."According to the NHC, Laura will continue to deliver hurricane-force winds to central and northern Louisiana throughout the day on Thursday. The storm will then move to the northeast, bringing heavy rain to the Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley regions on Friday and through the weekend.Laura made landfall near Cameron, Louisiana at about 1 a.m. CT on Wednesday as an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 storm with 150 mph sustained winds. The Category 4 rating makes Laura is the strongest hurricane to make landfall in Louisiana in at least 60 years, according to the National Weather Service.The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Wednesday that "Laura is expected to produce catastrophic impacts from the coast to well inland; life-threatening storm surge, extreme winds, torrential rain, flooding, and tornadoes."On early Thursday morning, NOAA's Coastal Inundation Dashboard showed storm surge warnings all across Louisiana's shoreline.
