BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- To achieve equitable development globally, China adheres to a principle of "common but differentiated responsibility" on climate change, a senior official said here Saturday.Xie Zhenhua, vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), made the remarks at the International Cooperative Conference on Green Economy and Climate Change.Xie's comments came a day after Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said that according to the principle of "common but differentiated responsibility," the international community should further clarify the mandatory reduction targets for developed countries and mitigation actions for developing nations."Developed countries discharged a great amount of greenhouse gases during their industrialization in the previous two centuries. That is the main cause of global warming," said Xie, one of China's leading negotiators for climate change talks. It is unfair to limit their development," Xie added.Xie said developed countries should transfer environmentally friendly technologies to developing nations and increase their aid to poor nations.Although a challenging task, China was likely to lower its energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) by 20 percent at the end of this year compared with the 2005 level, he said.China would work to play a constructive role to promote a successful Cancun conference and further enhance dialogue and cooperation with the international community in terms of tackling climate change and promoting sustainable development of the world, he said.Five months after the Copenhagen talks and seven months before the Cancun conference, Saturday's conference was recognized as a platform to promote the materialization of pledges in the Copenhagen accord and urge for a fruitful Cancun conference.With a theme of "Low carbon, New energy and Sustainable development," the conference was organized by the China Center for International Economic Exchanges. The conference has invited top leaders, environment officials and entrepreneurs from both China and countries including Brazil, India, Mexico and South Africa.

GUANGZHOU, April 18 (Xinhua) -- China's trade volume will reach 5.3 trillion U.S. dollars by the year 2020, Li Gang, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation under the Ministry of Commerce, said Sunday.Li made the remakes at the ongoing 107th China Import and Export Fair, the country's largest trade fair, held in the southern city of Guangzhou.According to Li, China's merchandise imports and exports will hit 4.3 trillion U.S. dollars in 2020.Merchandise exports will top other countries and be 2.4 trillion U.S. dollars in 2020, 10.1 percent of the world total.Imports will reach 1.9 trillion U.S. dollars and rank second largest, accounting for 8.2 percent of the world total.Weighed down by the global financial crisis, the nation's foreign trade recorded a 13.9 percent year-on-year decline to 2.2 trillion U.S. dollars in 2009, with merchandise exports of 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars and imports of 1 trillion U.S. dollars.In the first quarter, foreign trade began to grow again, jumping 44.1 percent to 617.85 billion U.S. dollars, according to customs data.

NANJING, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong Sunday called for reform in talent cultivation and the education appraisal system among universities to boost innovation.The government would reform the education system to promote innovation, international vision and comprehensive abilities among students, Liu said at the opening of a forum of university presidents in Nanjing.Universities should explore new patterns of education with open minds and more cooperation with other research institutions and businesses, Liu said.Education and talent were the key elements in China's development.Liu also urged the universities to play a role as social think tanks to serve the country's economic and social development.Liu was speaking at the Chinese-Foreign University Presidents Forum, which was attended by the heads of about 150 universities around the world.

BEIJING, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu on Saturday called for more concrete measures in quake relief efforts in response to the instructions of China's top leadership.Hui, also the head of the State Council's quake-relief headquarters, made the remarks at the sixth plenary meeting of the headquarters.China's top leadership on earlier Saturday has urged all-out efforts to rescue trapped people in the quake zone in northwestern Qinghai Province at a meeting chaired by Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, and attended by other members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.Hui stressed a put-people-first principle in the relief work. Efforts to search for and rescue the buried survivors as well as offering medical treatment to the injured people are still the top priorities, Hui said.The relief work should be carried out in a scientific, orderly, effective and well-organized way, Hui said. There should be no "blind spot" in the rescue work and epidemic prevention, he said.Military forces, local authorities and the local people should keep in close cooperation in the relief work, he said.

BEIJING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- China's average daily stock trading volume at the Shanghai Stock Exchange shrank 35.2 percent month on month to 96.85 billion yuan (14.2 billion U.S. dollars) in February, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) said Thursday.China's stock market was closed from Feb. 13 to 19, for the Spring Festival, the most important Chinese traditional holiday.Analysts held that trading was normally bleak in the Spring Festival month, as some investors preferred to cash in profits before going back to hometowns for family gatherings and some were cautious before the release of new economic data after the holiday.The Spring Festival fell in January last year. The daily average stock turnover was down 3.38 billion yuan to 65.4 billion yuan in January 2009 compared with December 2008, according to the PBOC.The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged up 110.58 points from Feb. 1 to 3,051.94 points on Feb. 26 this year, the last trading day in the month, the central bank said in a financial market report released Thursday on its official website.China's financial market kept its smooth run in January and February, said the PBOC.The Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.23 percent, or 38.32 points, to end at 3,147.42 points Thursday. The turnover at the Shanghai Stock Exchange was 154 billion yuan, showing investors' heartened confidence in economic recovery.Thursday's official figures revealed that the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for China's manufacturing sector stood at 55.1 percent in March, up 3.1 percentage points from February, the 13th straight month that the index was above 50 percent.
