WINDHOEK, March 25 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Thursday arrived in Windhoek to kick off his official visit to the southwestern African nation of Namibia.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the country's top advisory body, was making the visit at the invitation of the National Council of Namibia.Namibia was the second leg of Jia's 10-day African tour which already took him to Cameroon. JI'NAN, March 31(Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese legislator has called for greater efforts to promote women's awareness and ability to safeguard their legitimate rights and interests.Chen Zhili, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, made the remarks during a week-long inspection tour of the eastern Shandong Province ending Wednesday.Chen was sent by the top legislature to inspect how local law enforcement agencies implemented the Law on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of Women.The law, which took effect on Dec. 1, 2005, had played an important role in protecting women's legitimate rights, raising their social status and mobilized them in the country's modernization drive in an active and innovative manner, she said.She called for more efforts to publicize the law to make people aware of the law's significance in protecting women's rights.Chen, also chairwoman of the All-China Women's Federation, said Chinese women faced challenges such as discrimination and a lack of labor rights.

  

NANNING, June 3 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from rain-triggered landslides and flooding in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region rose to 44 Thursday.Eight people were still missing, said a statement from the regional flood control and drought relief headquarters.In Rongxian County alone, the death toll climbed to 27 after four more bodies were recovered Thursday.In Cenxi County, 12 people were confirmed dead as of Wednesday night.Three deaths were reported in Tengxian County, Donglan County and Fangchenggang City.Rescuers search for trapped persons in Beigeng Township, Xincheng County, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, June 3, 2010.Two primary school students, sisters aged 8 and 10, had been found drowned in Laibin City where flooding forced many schools to suspend classes.More than 600 residents in two villages in Laibin had been evacuated because of land subsidence Thursday. Four pits and cracks were reported near the villages, with the biggest having a diameter of more than 70 meters and depth of 20 meters.Increased water flow in underground rivers in wake of the torrential rains could have caused the subsidence, a Laibin municipal government official said.Heavy rains began pounding Guangxi Monday and triggered landslides early Wednesday.Across Guangxi, the rainstorms had battered 27 counties and 144,800 people had been evacuated by 4 p.m. Thursday, the regional civil affairs bureau said.In addition, 8,123 houses had collapsed and 161,830 hectares of crops had been damaged. The direct economic losses were estimated at 1.2 billion yuan (176 million U.S. dollars).

  

BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhua) -- China's Vice President Xi Jinping Monday told members and organizations of the Communist Party of China (CPC) they had strict responsibilities in restoring normal life in quake-stricken Qinghai Province and helping the survivors.Xi, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, made the requirements at a meeting of senior CPC leaders in Beijing on Party building.Party members, officials and organizations responsible for civil affairs should make sure quake-affected people have enough food, clothes, drinking water and shelters, Xi said.CPC members, officials and organizations working in health-care fields should treat the injured and prevent disease outbreaks, while members working in education should work to resume school classes, Xi said.Other CPC officials and members in transport, electrical power and telecommunications should make efforts to repair infrastructure, and restore power, water supplies and road transport as soon as possible.He Guoqiang, head of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, who was also present at the meeting, underlined disciplinary rules for quake relief work.
