SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As the heat wave continues, San Diego families are doing their best to seek out ways to stay cool. Antonia Maryna Gomez is a mom of two in Chula Vista and said it’s been hard to find ways to stay entertained and cool while also remembering social distancing. She’s taken her three-year-old to the pool, visited splash pads, played with water balloons and tried the beach, but she said the crowds were too large for her comfort at the beach. It’s also been difficult to keep her excited son away from other people.RELATED: Flex Alert issued for California, SDG&E lists possible neighborhoods impacted“It’s hard especially because he’s a very social kid, he loves talking to people but it’s hard to tell your kid what it’s like six feet apart,” she said.Another option to find relief in her area is cooling centers. A cooling center is open at the old Sears at the mall in Chula Vista on Broadway. This facility is typically open Monday through Friday, but did open up the weekend of Aug. 15 because of the excessive heat. Tony Ramos works for the City of Chula Vista and said they’ve been able to provide resources that are hard to find because of the pandemic.“We show movies, we also have wifi access which is very important because a lot of our libraries, a lot of the places where people normally tap wifi, are closed,” said Ramos.RELATED: San Diego County opens cool zones amid heat waveFacilities like that will be crucial due to a Flex Alert issued for all of California through Wednesday. The Flex Alert goes from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. every day, and everyone is asked to conserve energy to decrease demands during the heat wave and ideally prevent the need to cut off power in areas, however, consumers should be prepared for the likelihood of rotating outages.Between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., the California Independent System Operator (ISO) is urging consumers to:Set air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees, if health permits.Defer use of major appliances.Turn off unnecessary lights.Unplug unused electrical devices.Close blinds and drapes.Use fans when possible.Limit time the refrigerator door is open. 2136

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - City leaders say the canyon near the 163 that caught fire Tuesday afternoon was overdue for tree trimming and a homeless flushing. The fire only burned 10 trees but it has many neighbors frustrated that the fire even started in the first place.“That was a pretty big one,” said Councilman Chris Ward on the fire, “we’re pretty scared here in the mid city neighborhoods with the urban canyons which catch fire from time to time.”Ward says he has been trying for over a year to get CalTrans and the City of San Diego to clear out the canyons.Officials have not announced the cause of the fire but it is believe to have been from a cooking fire started by homeless illegally camping.RELATED: Brush fire breaks out near 163“About a generation ago we lost 75 homes in Normal Heights to a canyon fire so this is a real, real danger.” said Ward, “We gotta take this seriously.” 896

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As apprehensions rise to new levels, U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the U.S.-Mexico border has reached a breaking point. At the San Diego sector alone, the apprehension of unaccompanied minors rose by 80 percent from fiscal year 2018 to fiscal year 2019. Most of the minors made their way to the U.S. from Guatemala and Honduras. The number of families detained in San Diego saw the largest increase. RELATED: Nearly 300 families may have been separated before 'zero tolerance' took effect, admin saysDuring fiscal year 2018, 1,032 families were apprehended at San Diego’s border. That figure rose sharply to 8,217 so far in fiscal year 2019, an increase of nearly 700 percent. Most families also came from Guatemala and Honduras. The agency says it’s also facing more large groups. So far this fiscal year, CBP reports 70 large groups of 100 or more compared to just 13 large groups in 2018. Border Patrol Chief Brian Hastings said during Tuesday's news conference that they've seen about 2,400 fraudulent family claims from April last year to February, with some migrants falsely claiming they are under 18-years-old or saying they are family members when in reality, they are not. RELATED: Secondary border wall construction startsCBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan released a statement following the release of the report saying in part, "We are currently facing a humanitarian and national security crisis along our southwest border." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Car owners at a senior community in University City woke up to a messy surprise Tuesday morning. Louise, who asked 10news not to identity her, went to her SUV which was parked on Kantor Street, and her heart sank."I walked to my car and saw that the window had been burst.  It was terrifying," said Louise.Glass was everywhere and inside her vehicle was another mess.  Her glove compartment had been tossed, her insurance and registration scattered.  Nothing was missing, but Louise is nervous."Very afraid of the personal information now they know what address I'm actually at," said Louise. It appears someone took a bat or something like that to bash the window, before unlocking their passenger door.  Louise is not the only victim.  Nearby there were more vehicles hit, some 14 in all.  The windows on those vehicles were also shattered.  Some items were stolen and the repairs will cost hundreds of dollars for each incident."A lot of people on fixed incomes. This is really hurting them, because it is costly to put these windows in these cars," said Louise. If you have any information on the case, call the San Diego Police Department's Northern Division at 858-552-1700. 1245
