BEIJING, May 21 (Xinhua) -- China may see increased planting acre of early rice this year, though drought has not been relieved in some areas, said a statement on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture on Saturday.China is expected to plant 88.5 million Mu (5.87 million hectares) of early rice this year, about 1.6 million Mu more than the previous year, thanks to soaring rice prices and policy incentives, the statement said. However, drought continues in Hubei Province, Poyang Lake areas in Jiangxi Province, Dongting Lake areas in Hunan Province and Leizhou Peninsular in Guangdong Province, the statement said. The drought has affected about 3 million Mu of paddies in Hubei in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, the statement said. The statement urged local agricultural departments to help facilitate paddy management, as strong rains were forecast for southern China from Friday to next Tuesday. The middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River received about 40 to 60 percent less rain this year than in previous years -- this year being the least amount of rain in the past 50 years, said the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.

LOS ANGELES, May 11 (Xinhua) -- U.S. researchers have found MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) in meats sold at U.S. supermarkets, according to a study published on Wednesday. This is "community-acquired MRSA" that is transmitted by humans carrying the bacteria, researchers at Wayne State University in Detroit reported in the study appearing in the May 11 online edition of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's ( CDC's) journal Emerging Infectious Diseases. For the study, the researchers purchased 289 raw meat samples, including 156 beef, 76 chicken and 57 turkey samples, from 30 grocery stores in Detroit from August 2009 through January 2010.The researchers found that 22.5 percent of the samples were contaminated with S. aureus and six samples tested positive for MRSA.Of the six samples contaminated with MRSA, two were beef, three were chicken and one was turkey, the researchers said. The extent of MRSA contamination in meat varies by the type of meat and where the meat was processed, said lead researcher Yifan Zhang, an assistant professor in the department of nutrition and food science at the university. The germ is apparently being introduced by humans handling the meat, she said.According to another recent study, the strain of MRSA in meat in the United States is not the strain found in animals, Zhang noted."MRSA has always been found in human patients, but we found this in retail meat, so retail meat can be a reservoir of these bugs," said Zhang."When people handle food, they can get the bugs from the meat if the meat is already contaminated," she explained. The risk of becoming infected is especially high if you have open cuts or sores on your hands or skin, Zhang added.MRSA is common in hospitals and nursing homes, where it can cause serious illness and even death. But recently "community-acquired MRSA" has become a problem among some high school and college athletes who share equipment. This type of MRSA appears as a skin infection and is usually less serious, according to CDC.MRSA is killed when the meat is cooked thoroughly, experts say.Other precaution measures include:-- Wear gloves when handling meat, especially when there are wounds on the hands;-- Washing plates or utensils used to prepare food before using them again to eat; and-- Disinfect counters that have come into contact with meats.

BEIJING, March 27 (Xinhua) -- China's search giant Baidu has pledged to remove all unauthorized literary works from its free online literary database Wenku within three days. After receiving requests from copyright owners to remove their works, Baidu has sped up its process of checking for unauthorized items. The unauthorized works were uploaded by Internet users to Wenku without prior approval from the authors, a spokesman for the Chinese search engine giant said in a statement. In the statement issued Saturday, Baidu apologized for what has "hurt the feelings of a certain number of writers" during Wenku's previous stage of operation, according to a report published Sunday by daily newspaper The Beijing News.Baidu said it respects copyright laws and will continue to cooperate with publishers and writers to establish a revenue-sharing model that will ensure that copyright owners receive a share of revenues from online versions of their works.Hailing Baidu's move to remove the unauthorized works, Wang Yefei, deputy head of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Copyrights hopes that Baidu and the publishers should work together to find win-win methods of mutual cooperation, according to the newspaper. However, some writers involved in the copyright row are dissatisfied with remedies Baidu has so far taken.Shen Haobo, CEO of Beijing Motie Book Co. Ltd, one of the six negotiators representing writers in Thursday's negotiations, told the Beijing Youth Daily that Baidu apologized only because of public pressure, but it did not mean to alter its current operation model for Wenku."Without changes in the operation model, the unauthorized works, even if removed now, could be uploaded again sometime later. Besides, it's unacceptable that Baidu reiterated that it had not infringed on our copyright," Shen was quoted as saying.Popular writer and blogger Han Han posted an open letter he wrote to Baidu's CEO Li Yanhong in his blog, indicating that he might take further actions to uphold his rights if Baidu's stance remains unchanged.Baidu's online literary database Wenku is an open platform for online resource sharing. It has been in operation since 2009.More than 40 Chinese writers posted an open letter online on March 15, accusing Baidu of stealing their works and infringing on their copyrights. Baidu's Wenku database was blamed for allowing literary works to become available online without the authors' prior approval.Baidu was asked to make a public apology, compensate for the writers' losses and halt any cases of copyright infringement.
