UNITED NATIONS, April 1 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Friday called for greater public awareness of autism, in order to fight the stigma and discrimination facing those who suffer from the disorder.The statement came in a message to mark the annual World Autism Awareness Day, observed globally on April 2."Children and persons with autistic conditions face major challenges associated with stigma and discrimination, as well as a lack of access to support," said Ban."Far too many suffer terrible discrimination, abuse and isolation, in violation of their fundamental human rights," he added.Autism is a disorder that affects the brain's development of social and communication skills, and generally appears in the first three years of life."The number of children and people with autistic conditions continues to rise -- in every nation and in every racial, ethnic and social group," the secretary-general said.Ban said it is critical to support parents of children with the disorder and "create jobs for individuals with autism based on their skills and strengths, and improve public education to better meet the needs of students with autism."

JINAN, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday and Thursday visited drought-hit villages and ordered all-out efforts to combat the dry spell while celebrating the Chinese New Year with local people.When visiting Jiaxiang County and Qufu City in east China's Shandong Province, Wen inspected cornfields and reservoirs to assess the drought's impact.The drought, which began in October, has hit the southwest parts of Shandong hardest."It's hard to know when it will rain. BEIJING, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's health authorities Tuesday vowed to improve their response to food safety incidents.The ministry would issue a protocol "as early as possible" on how to respond to and investigate food safety incidents, said Vice Health Minister Chen Xiaohong at a national meeting on food safety in Beijing.It would also provide better training for officials and professionals working in the field, Chen said.Last year, the ministry initiated investigations into several incidents such as milk powder that allegedly caused infant girls to grow breasts and illegal soup additives by restaurants.In the milk powder case, the investigation found no evidence that Synutra International's products had caused the problem. Media reports said the company was the victim of dirty tricks by a rival firm.In addition, the ministry blacklisted 48 substances illegally added to food and 22 misused food additives last year.The ministry would include projects related to food safety in state-sponsored health programs giving free medical services to the public in next five years, Health Minister Chen Zhu said at the same meeting.But Chen did not give details about what kind of projects they will be.Under the current six state health programs, the government provides free cataract surgery for the needy, free breast and cervical examinations for rural women, free hepatitis B vaccines, free folic acid pills for rural women, new cooking stoves in rural homes to prevent fluorine poisoning caused by coal stoves as well as modern toilets for rural residents.

BEIJING, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- A total of 2.64 billion trips in China were recorded by road or ships during the 40-day Spring Festival transportation season which ended Sunday, the Ministry of Transport said.The figure was 13.6 percent higher than the same period last year, noted ministry spokesman He Jianzhong.To ensure smooth transportation, 840,000 buses were put into use each day during the busy season, as well as 13,089 ships, He said.Statistics on railway transportation are not yet available.However, statistics from the Beijing railway administration showed 20.63 million tourists had left Beijing during the transportation season from Jan. 19 to Feb. 27, up 3.9 percent year on year.The busy Spring Festival transportation season runs for 40 days and is calculated in two phases: 15 days before and 25 days after the Spring Festival.
