Summer is in full swing, and with the warmer months comes the mosquitoes. Not only are the small insects pesky, they are considered the deadliest animal in the world, believe it or not. More than 700 million people around the globe get sick from mosquito bites, and more than 700,000 people die from those bites each year."We always see West Nile Virus peaks right after the Fourth of July weekend, because people have been outside and not protecting themselves," says Kylee Grenis, an expert on mosquitoes. Grenis helped us conduct an experiment to find out which bug repellent works the best.We purchased three mosquito traps. We sprayed one trap with DEET. The other with a top rated non-DEET spray called Skin So Soft by Avon. The third trap was a controlled trap with no spray. The traps were hung next to dry ice in a mosquito-infested park."We are going to hang some dry ice near those traps to simulate a human standing and breathing and hopefully that will help attract more mosquitoes to our traps," explains Grenis on the use of dry ice. After an hour, the trap sprayed with DEET had one mosquito. In the Avon-sprayed trap, there were no mosquitos. In the control trap, there were six mosquitos. The sprays kept the mosquitos away.As far as sprays go, Grenis says she still prefers DEET. "It is great at making you invisible to mosquitoes,” she says. “That blocks the receptors so that they can't detect your carbon dioxide signature." But, many consumers fear products with DEET are not safe. "I think a lot of the time people get it confused with DDT,” she explains of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), a chemical compound banned in many countries due to the danger it poses to wildlife and the environment.DEET is safe to use and just like the Avon spray, and both sprays are effective in keeping mosquitos away during the summer time months. 1872

Stormy Daniels, the adult film star who claims to have had an affair with President Donald Trump in 2006 and whom Michael Cohen paid to keep quiet during the 2016 election, issued a statement Wednesday as lawmakers grilled Cohen on Capitol Hill.Daniels said she was "proud" that Cohen was "beginning to tell the truth" about her alleged affair with the president and subsequent hush money payments. She also took Cohen to task for allegedly threatening her to keep quiet about the affair in the years after receiving payment."You spoke about how the president and his attorney put you and your family in danger by calling you a liar and a rat and disparaging you in public," Daniels said in her statement. "I understand your fear, Michael. I have a family too. Do you believe now that when you and the president called me a liar, when you were his attorney and insulted me, threatened to bankrupt me and worse, that you put me and my family in danger? I remember the fear you feel. I still feel it."On Wednesday, Cohen brought a check to the hearing which he says was repayment from Trump for issuing a hush money payment to Daniels. Cohen also testified on Wednesday that Trump directed Cohen to lie to Trump's wife, Melania, about the affair — an order that he carried out and says he still regrets to this day.Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison in late 2018 for lying to Congress and for campaign finance charges relating to the payments to Stormy Daniels.MSNBC reporter Garrett Haake published Daniels' statement first. Daniels added she will not be issuing another statement today.Read Daniels' entire statement below. 1644

Sen. Elizabeth Warren kicked the 2020 White House race into high gear on New Year's Eve when she announced the formation of a presidential exploratory committee. The announcement made clear that Warren is in the race for the Democratic nomination, but by forming an exploratory committee, she is technically still one step short of officially becoming a presidential candidate. An exploratory committee is a vehicle by which candidates for federal office can "test the waters" of a bid before officially entering a race. It's a mostly technical distinction that allows candidates to form a committee and begin raising and spending money on limited campaign activities like polling and outreach. And exploratory committees aren't initially required to file reports with the Federal Election Commission, at least until a candidate's bid becomes official by FEC standards. That happens, 892

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida — A McDonald's employee who was battered by a customer at work has hired an attorney and says she has been placed on leave following the incident. On New Year's Eve, a video of the employee, Yasmine James, 20, being battered by a male customer at her place employment in St. Petersburg went viral. On Wednesday, James retained local attorney Michele Rayner-Goolsby after she says she was placed on leave. James says that although she was not physically hurt, she was emotionally hurt when she was left to defend herself.Attorney Rayner-Goolsby released the following statement:On New Year’s Eve at the McDonald’s located on 34th Street South in St. Petersburg, Ms. James was physically attacked by Daniel Taylor, a customer who became enraged after being told of the restaurant’s ‘no straw in the lobby’ policy, simply meaning straws are only offered to customers upon request. Taylor, refusing to believe Ms. James, proceeded to berate her, hurling vulgar and discriminatory names at her, while threatening physical violence in front of her colleagues and other customers. Ms. James’ attempts to de-escalate the situation were met by more violence, as Taylor forcefully grabbed her by the collar, dragging her over the top of the counter. Ms. James was left to defend herself, as no one immediately stepped in to help. While Taylor was arrested, the McDonald’s corporation has yet to release a statement about the incident and has placed Ms. James on leave. This case is a clear example of how white privilege and male privilege too often leave Black women alone to defend themselves in the face of harm. I’m grateful that Ms. James has entrusted me with her case; she’s not alone in the fight anymore.James spoke about the incident for the first time Thursday since it happened. She says she's not an aggressive person and hopes people don't think differently of her. She says she needed to defend herself."I didn’t have any control over my body when he grabbed me," she said. "Like I’m scared, like why are you grabbing me, I just didn’t understand his intentions. Even though we were having a verbal conversation, I don’t think it was that for him to grab me.”She says right after the attack she had to call 911 because she says management didn't know what to do. She doesn't blame her manager and says hes a good person but says there isn't enough company training on how to deal with situations like this."When that happened, it was like he didn’t know what to do. It's like, basically what's the procedure? There’s none," she said. It’s why she’s now working closely with her new attorneys to hold McDonald's accountable. James hasn’t been fired and says McDonald's has welcomed her back, but she doesn’t feel safe."It’s like scary, anybody can do something to me. I work so close with the customers, and now that everyone knows and people don’t agree with this they can do anything," she said. "I am committed to using this horrible experience as means to fight for justice, not only for myself, but for other women experiencing this kind of violence in environments where they should be safe and protected.”“I am so grateful for the outpouring of support I have received from all around the country. I am aware this type of violence happens to women, especially Black women, everyday," James added.St. Pete police arrested Daniel Taylor, 41, and charged him with two counts of battery.A McDonald's spokesperson released this statement to ABC Action News on Thursday:We share the community's concern, and are taking this disturbing incident very seriously. Our highest priority is always the safety and well-being of everyone in the restaurant, and we do not condone violence of any kind, especially against our employees. We firmly stand with our employees everywhere, including our employees at this restaurant who were involved in this incident.James believes she is getting paid while on leave however McDonald's has not yet confirmed this information. 4029
