Some residents in 34 counties in California will lose electricity overnight Tuesday into Wednesday in hopes to reduce the risk of the spread of wildfires, PG&E announced on Tuesday. The power outages could last several days, PG&E said. This is due to high winds that are expected in parts of California on Wednesday and Thursday. Isolated areas could have winds of 60 to 70 MPH. Gusty winds coupled with dry conditions mean conditions will be favorable for wildfires. Power company officials say that the outages will begin in the northern sections of the state, and trickle down into central and coastal sections of California. “The safety of our customers and the communities we serve is our most important responsibility, which is why PG&E has decided to turn power off to customers during this widespread, severe wind event. We understand the effects this event will have on our customers and appreciate the public’s patience as we do what is necessary to keep our communities safe and reduce the risk of wildfire,” said Michael Lewis, PG&E’s senior vice president of Electric Operations.Dozens of community centers will open during daylight hours while power is out. SACRAMENTO, Cali. – If you’ve ever wanted to experience life beyond the Earth’s atmosphere, you may get the chance in six years. A company has a goal to make space vacations a reality by 2025. Right now, The Gateway Foundation is developing the very first space hotel with artificial gravity. “So the Von Braun Space Station is going to be the first commercial space station with artificial gravity,” said Tim Alatorre, a senior design architect with the company. The Von Braun Rotating Space Station will basically be a space hotel for customers.“So, the station works like a bike tire, we’re going to have spokes coming out of the central hub. That’s where the spaceships will dock, zero gravity and then it rotates,” said Alatorre. “So, the rotation creates that artificial gravity on the perimeter – this is where people will be living on the outside edge.”Although artificial gravity sounds like something out of science fiction, Alatorre says the science is sound. Designers will be using technology from the International Space Station.“NASA built the space station with just a few tools, one of them is the mechanical arm that we often see in the videos,” said John Blinko, President of the Gateway Foundation. “It’s the arm that we want to adopt in our space construction and designs and schemes and so forth.”But all of this depends on Elon Musk and SpaceX’s launch system. “SpaceX is developing the Super Heavy and the Starship platform. Our projections are showing the price of tickets is going to get lower as time goes on. So for right now, it could be cost prohibitive for some, but in a few short years, it’s going to be a common thing people do. As soon as Starship is ready to launch and is orbital, we want to be one of the first customers to launch into orbit.”In 2025, Alatorre says people will be able to vacation to space. “So, the space station is going to be a big draw to people,” said Alatorre. “We’re going to have a hotel, restaurant, bar, gymnasium.”But it’s more than that. The foundation says it’s the first step to advancing beyond the atmosphere.“But big picture – we’re trying to build out a space industry,” said Alatorre. “We want to have multiple stations in space – space tourism going to the moon, going to Mars, going to other space stations. And just from a humanity standpoint, having hundreds of people being able to go up to space and look back on Earth and just know we are sharing this little blue marble. TAMPA, Fla. — An alarming new study found certain engines in Kia and Hyundai vehicles are more likely to catch fire than any other vehicles on the road, according to a report by Scripps affiliate WFTS-TV in Tampa.Matt Moore, who oversaw the engine study at the Highway Loss Data Institute, reported Kia and Hyundai vehicles with two-liter, turbocharged engines were more than three times more likely to catch fire than engines in any other similar-sized vehicle on U.S. roads.“These things tend to be very catastrophic,” Moore told I-Team Investigator Jackie Callaway. “An increase of three and half a times the control population is a serious problem.”Those engines are found in 2011 to 2015 Kia Optima, 2011 to 2014 Hyundai Sonatas and 2013 to 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sports.The automakers have recalled most of those vehicles since January. Hyundai points out that it started recalling vehicles back in 2015 and again in 2017. The automakers have yet to recall all vehicles running on another potentially hazardous engine – a 2.4-liter model that the institute found is nearly two times more likely to catch fire. The automaker does say however that they have recalled many models that contained the 2.4 liter engine.That was the same engine in Kirstin Wilson’s 2016 Kia Sportage when it burst into flames as she drove down a Georgia highway last summer.“It literally blew up in front of us with all of our stuff in it,” said Wilson.But Wilson’s SUV is not among the hundreds of thousands of models Kia recently recalled for fire hazards.A Kia spokesman said the automaker negotiated a resolution with Wilson because she only owned the vehicle for one month before the incident.Fernanda Krueger’s 2016 Kia Sorento is also not on the recall list – even though her SUV with a 2.4-liter engine burned up last April in San Diego.“I was driving with my car on fire,” said Krueger.Kia and Hyundai have recalled nearly 700,000 vehicles since January, but the Center for Auto Safety told the I-Team that’s still not enough. Last year, Jason Levine of the the Center for Auto Safety petitioned federal regulators to force the automakers to recall 2.9 million vehicles.“There are probably several million vehicles between the two manufactures Kia and Hyundai that remain not at a recall status that remain potentially a fire risk,” said Levine.Insurance claim records show more Kia and Hyundai vehicles are catching fire than have been reported to government regulators.Those records show more than 2,700 fires in just five models alone – 2011 to 15 Kia Optima, 2011 to 14 Hyundai Sonata, 2011 to 15 Kia Sorento, 2011 to 12 Hyundai Santa Fe and 2013 to 14 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport.The automakers wouldn’t answer questions directly about whether they would expand the recall, but said safety is a top priority.Statement from Kia Motors America:Kia Motors America (KMA) recognizes that customer safety is paramount and is committed to addressing every thermal incident. Depending upon the underlying cause of a recall, not all vehicles of any one model and model year may be included due to varying configurations and equipment. The SC147 recall pertains only to those vehicles equipped with GDI engines within the applicable models.Claims involving damage to a Kia vehicle, including fires, are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and if a fire is determined to be the result of a Kia manufacturing issue, KMA will work with the customer to reach a satisfactory resolution to the matter. If a recall is unable to be remedied immediately, KMA will provide alternate transportation at no cost to the customer until their vehicle is repaired or another satisfactory resolution is determined. But Mark Rober's glitter bomb trap for package thieves proves it can be a bit messy, too.Rober is clearly a smart guy; a former NASA engineer, he worked on the Mars Curiosity rover.But for anyone who's gotten a package stolen off a doorstep, he's now a hero."Something needs to be done to take a stance against dishonest punks like this," Rober said in a now-viral YouTube video.After having a package stolen from his doorstep, Rober decided to use his engineering background to serve up some retribution on would-be thieves."If anyone was going to make a revenge bait package and over-engineer the crap out of it, it was going to be me," he said.The package would contain a pound of fine glitter plus some potent fart spray. The glitter would burst out when opened; the latter would spray five times, every 30 seconds.But Robert went one step further -- including four phones recording the thieves' reactions. A GPS tracker in the phones would let him know where a package ultimately ended up.If he couldn't recover the package, the video would at least automatically upload to the cloud.Once completed, he slapped a packing label addressed from the "Home Alone" character Kevin McCallister to movie villains Harry and Marv -- a nice, figurative bow on the present.Then Rober just needed to wait and let the package rain pain.In the YouTube video, some "victims" opened packages in their cars, with glitter being tossed into every nook and cranny.
