BEIJING, April 12 (Xinhuanet) -- A new research indicats taking vitamin D could ward off vision loss from age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in women younger than 75, according to media reports on Tuesday.In the research, women under 75 who consumed sufficient vitamin D cut their risk of developing early age-related AMD, a leading cause of vision loss and blindness, by 59 percent when compared to women with vitamin D-poor diets.Researchers found that vitamin D levels among patients in the study were most affected by the amount of vitamin D they consumed, through certain fish, dairy, eggs, and leafy greens, not by the amount of outdoor exposure they had. LOS ANGELES, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Drinking alcohol may raise the likelihood among teenagers to spend more time on computers, a new study suggests.The study, conducted by researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College, was based on a survey of 264 teenagers, aged 13 to 17.Results showed that compared with teens who did not report drinking, those who drank alcohol in the last month used a computer more hours per week for non-school-related activities, including the use of social networking sites.Drinking was also linked to more frequent social networking and listening to and downloading music, according to the study published Monday in the on-line edition of the journal Addictive Behaviors.However, there was no demonstrated link between alcohol use and computer use for school work, neither there was strong link between video games and drinking or on-line shopping and drinking."While the specific factors linking teenage drinking and computer use are not yet established, it seems likely that adolescents are experimenting with drinking and activities on the Internet," said Dr. Epstein, assistant professor of public health at the college."In turn, exposure to on-line material such as alcohol advertising or alcohol-using peers on social networking sites could reinforce teens' drinking."Children are being exposed to computers and the Internet at younger ages. LOS ANGELES, March 4 (Xinhua) -- The California Department of Public Health on Friday announced a recall of hazelnuts which might be contaminated by E. coli bacteria.The department said it ordered the recall after seven people fell sick with E. coli bacteria from eating tainted hazelnuts.The seven illnesses include one in Michigan, three in Minnesota and three in Wisconsin, said Dr. Howard Backer, interim director of the department.The hazelnuts were distributed by DeFranco & Sons, a Los Angeles company, said the department.After being notified of the contamination, the company is voluntarily recalling the nuts, the department said.The hazelnuts affected by the recall were sold under the brand names Sunripe, George Packing, Firestone Farms and Northwest Hazelnut and were distributed nationwide from Nov. 2 to Dec. 22, according to the department.The 50-pound bags of hazelnuts and mixed nuts with hazelnuts may have been repacked or sold from bulk containers, the department said, adding people who had bought the hazelnuts should not eat them.Consumers should check with retailers to determine if their nuts are subject to the recall, and if they are, should discard them, the department added.People who develop symptoms after consuming hazelnuts should seek immediate medical attention, the department suggested.E. coli may cause symptoms that include bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps and dehydration.
