INDIANAPOLIS — In a constant battle to keep your private data secure, Apple is hitting back, keeping people out of your phone. But it’s bringing up a major issue for law enforcement in Indiana. When it comes to solving crimes, often a key piece of evidence is stored on a cellphone or a computer, and police are constantly trying to stay ahead of criminals. But as more people and tech giants are concerned about security, some of those new security features and encryption are stopping police from solving crimes. In 2015, Apple was in the spotlight after they refused to unlock an iPhone for the FBI after a terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California. At the time, investigators said potential key clues of other possible terrorist attacks could be on the phone. Apple refused to help unlock the device. In the years since, a new device called GrayKey that law enforcement could use to crack iPhones was developed, and they've been using it ever since. "[GrayKey] can plug into iPhones that historically, in general, have what we call 'brute force' on them,” said Steve Beaty, a digital security expert.The September release of Apple's latest operating system, iOS 12, shut down the ability for that special device to work. The result left investigators scrambling. “Apple's fighting these guys pretty hard, has been a bit of a chess game," Beaty said. The Indiana State Police and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department have the ,000 GrayKey device. Both agencies say they only use the device as part of ongoing criminal investigations after a search warrant has been issued by a judge. But even with a warrant, Apple’s latest operating system for iPhones has shut down the ability for the GrayKey to work. Investigators are concerned that they won't be able to solve some crimes because they can't get key pieces of evidence off a new iPhone. "So for the time being, I don't see it being more than a chess game where there are going to be advances made on either side,” Beaty said. “And I don't think there's going to be a definitive ... ‘checkmate’ in the foreseeable future."WRTV asked both ISP and IMPD if they have had any cases where the device hasn’t worked. In the midst of an economic downtown, small businesses had to figure out how to stay afloat. The website fundBLACKfounders launched earlier this year, and is providing a platform to help small businesses that are in need, or are looking to launch.“We offer a boutique movie-going entertainment experience,” Kendra Tucker explained. She helps run Next Act Entertainment. The idea for the Maryland business started in 2018, in part with co-owner Anthony Fykes.“2019 we opened up the theater. We took up a 1938 Art Deco theater right outside of Baltimore,” Fykes explained. “And we basically renovated it.”Then COVID-19 hit, forcing businesses like movie theaters to close temporarily.“During this time we knew that we just needed to survive as most small businesses do, and we had a lot of guests that were asking us about, How can we support you?'” Fykes said.For some businesses, closures weren’t temporary. A study out of Stanford University showed the drop in business owners from February to April 2020 was the largest on record, and black-owned businesses saw a 41 percent drop.So Fykes looked for help. “I basically just did a Google search and I found Renee, and the platform looked legit,” he said.He had come across fundBLACKfounders, a crowdfunding platform.“We were super nervous at first around even doing something like this. We were like, how are we going to be perceived, are our guests going to think we’re going belly up?,” Fykes said.“What I noticed with crowdfunding is that not a lot of African Americans were using it for ownership or for building businesses or startups,” Renee King said. She started fundBLACKfounders. She said anyone can start a campaign on the platform -- but unlike other crowdfunding sites, fundBLACKfounders coaches businesses through the process, and gives founders flexibility. The platform takes five percent commission on funds earned.“They can raise or lower their goal amount,” King explained. “As the money starts to come in and our merchant account clears it, the money goes straight to the founder.”“Starting in the end of January 2020 through now, we’ve raised over ,000…for 12 black entrepreneurs,” she said.For Next Act, the platform provided a way for the community to help.“It’s success is really built on the strength of the community that supports it, and fundBLACKfounders, it matches the type of strength and support that we get from our community,” Tucker said.For other companies like Saraa Green’s startup, the platform gives her a way to get an idea going. “We initially wanted to raise capital for our business to bring our tool out into the market,” she said.Her product is called The Braid Releaser. “My mom had to take out our braids and take down our braids and that would take hours, and the tools that she was currently using really wasn't doing its job,” Green explained. “She wanted to create a tool that would decrease the time in taking down braids, that is comfortable to use, and that essentially reduces the hair loss during the process.”That’s when she met Renee King. “I did not want my mother's dream to just come to an end because of this pandemic,” Green said.Nearly eight in 10 small businesses are now fully or partially open as of June, according to a poll by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.“What's good is this is actually helping us think through how do we flex into the entertainment part of our business,” Tucker said. Next Act has expanded to become a broader entertainment space, and is even being used for private events to help stay in business.As fundBLACKfounders grows, King wants the platform to help connect businesses to their communities.“We need to start helping black entrepreneurs a little bit more, and getting them more funding so that they can scale the solutions they need for their communities or they need for the world in general,” King said. 3864

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — A new effort is underway aimed at better protecting the health of Indiana children in the classroom.A recent WRTV television station found most schools do not test for radon, a lung cancer-causing gas that comes up through the soil, even though the EPA recommends schools test at least every five years.The federal EPA estimates one in five schools has a classroom with dangerous levels of radon.State lawmakers have already vowed to take action, including looking at possible legislation requiring schools test for the radioactive material or requiring new school buildings use radon-resistant materials.Now, environmental groups are getting involved in the movement as well as the Indiana State Department of Health.Following the WRTV investigation, the Sierra Club’s Hoosier Chapter passed a resolution supporting requirements for radon testing in daycares and schools in Indiana.The Hoosier Environmental Council also supports requirements.“Yes, I think Indiana should have testing requirements for schools,” said Dr. Indra Frank, environmental health director with the Hoosier Environmental Council. “It is estimated that 1 in 3 Indiana homes has elevated levels of radon that can be unhealthy.”The EPA map shows much of Central Indiana is in a hot zone for radon, meaning the gas is widespread throughout the soil and buildings in our state.Dr. Frank emphasized radon can be in new or old buildings, including homes and schools."Radon isn't going to discriminate about which type of building it seeps into," said Frank.Improving Kids’ Environment, a group that trains Indiana schools on air quality issues, is also concerned about radon."I think with schools if you don't hold their feet to the fire, because they have so many things that they are accountable for, they just let those things go," said Margaret Frericks, Program Manager with Improving Kids’ Environment.A dozen other states have laws or regulations in place regarding radon in schools, and Frericks says it’s time for Indiana.Frericks said many people overlook radon because children often do not get lung cancer, and there’s no signs or symptoms associated with radon exposure.“It should be done,” said Frericks. “Not knowing is not an excuse."As environmental groups get ready for the upcoming legislative session, WRTV is already getting results at the Indiana State Department of Health.After our story aired, ISDH added information about radon to the indoor air quality website for schools, and they’re now in the process of developing best practices regarding radon in the classroom.“ISDH is required to review the best practices documents every three years, but we make changes and updates as needed,” said Megan Wade-Taxter, a spokeswoman for ISDH. “Ensuring that schools have the most up-to-date information on how to best protect the health of students, faculty and all those who enter their buildings is important.”Environmental groups say it’s a step in the right direction, and that we all pay down the road for people who develop radon-induced lung cancer.“Preventing an unhealthy exposure is much less expensive than trying to cure a disease once it’s arisen,” said Frank. 3212
