TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay area is known for its crystal clear beaches and white sand.Many people see the saltwater as a place to relax and kick back, but Dr. Serene Al-Momen sees it as a vast area of opportunity to stop the spread of the coronavirus.Specifically with what lies under the surface."The jellyfish is the component of the sensor that basically makes the cell emit light when a pathogen from the air is connected to it or binds to it," Dr. Al-Momen said.Dr. Al-Momen is the CEO of the company Senseware. She said the jellyfish is helping her team identify the coronavirus in the air.Her team works to find what's in the air behind the scenes. They do it with a sensor box not much bigger than an Amazon Echo at home.The sensor can detect pathogens in the air like Ecoli, SARS and anthrax.In March, they shifted gears in what type of pathogen they wanted to find."We took what we had and we kind of improved on it to really meet the challenges of today with COVID," Dr. Al-Momen said.The sensor can count particles down to the smallest micron that the common eye would never catch.To detect the coronavirus, they made adjustments."For COVID, we have the SARS code 2 antibody in that cell. So, what happens is when we get the sample of the air and the sensor gets the sample of the air there is a pathogen that binds into the cell and connects to it it will emit light," Dr. Al-Momen said.To help identify pathogens scientists use a luminescent component from a jellyfish; something that is nothing new when working to identify viruses and diseases."This particular methodology was created in the early 2000s by the MIT Lincoln Labs to specifically identify anthrax threats when anthrax was an issue," Dr. Al-Momen said.The jellyfish's protein helps light up a cell when a pathogen from the air is connected to or binds to it.The team then uses sophisticated algorithms that measure the intensity of the light that can determine whether it's positive or negative.The sensors cost tens of thousands of dollars and are geared towards larger corporations such as hospitals and senior care facilities.Senseware is currently in the Beta testing phase and they hope to offer the machine commercially by November.For more information about Senseware, visit their website. New transportation options are showing up in cities across the country, including shareable bikes, electric scooters, and now mopeds are even starting to compete for street space.However, with all these new electronic transportation options there are safety concerns. Starting this weekend, 400 electric mopeds will be hitting the streets of Washington, D.C. One thousand of the mopeds are already available for rent in New York City. The company behind these electric mopeds, Revel, plans to expand to other cities. “The benefit is really simple. The way you have to think about it: this is almost always at least half the cost of Uber and Lyft and twice as much fun,” says Paul Suhey with Revel. They're part of a growing number of transportation options people can rent by using their cell phone app. Most major cities already have electric scooters and bicycles. Last year in the U.S., people took 84 million trips on bikes and scooters, according to National Association of City Transportation officials. However, the influx of rides is causing safety concerns, with some concerned the vehicles will add to the congestion on the road. “If you're having to be aware of either a cyclist, a scooter rider, now a moped rider, who may go in between cars, you have to be careful and watch out for each other as you're using these different modes of operations,” says Jeanette Tejeda de Gomez with AAA. She says research shows moped riders are more likely to be injured or die than those walking, biking or driving a car. However, Revel says helmets are included with each rental, riders have to be at least 21, have a driver's license and they screen the rider's driving record. “From our first couple months operating in New York, in over 300,000 rides, 99.99 percent have happened without incident, and we understand that safety record doesn't happen by accident,” Suhey says. The company shut down temporarily for the pandemic and that will also affect the holiday offering of its "Hot Tamales" and "Ike and Mike" fruit candies."I don't think the consumer will know when they walk into a supermarket what is short and what is not short because so many things are disrupted," said John Phillip Tarantino Jr., president of Tarantino Foods, LLC in Buffalo.Tarantino Foods is a wholesale food distributor with 2,000 customers that includes colleges, casinos, restaurants, and pizzerias.The company president told 7 Eyewitness News Reporter Ed Reilly that his business is having a hard time finding many items such as french fries, California dates, certain types of cheese, frozen bread, bread crumbs, ketchup, Kraft ranch dressing, macaroni and cheese, McCormick spices, and packets of hot sauce - to name a few.It is a difficult situation for food service suppliers as retail demand in grocery stores exploded during the crisis and forced manufacturers to redirect their efforts. Some less-profitable items are not being produced. Pasta and flavored drinks have seen those reductions.Tarantino said consumers were looking to buy anything they could stockpile, such as Campbell soups and frozen vegetables.Shut down of food plants with workers afraid of the virus started the problem which increased to a "tsunami" with surging demand by shoppers. In just a few days, New York could be the first state in the country to ban declawing cats, unless it's for medical reasons. Cities like Los Angeles and Denver already outlaw it. Dr. Aubrey Lavizzo, with Paw Project Colorado, stopped declawing cats years ago, and he helped lead the charge to banning it in Denver. “It's a mutilation,” he says. “Basically, partial digital amputation is an amputation without cost. That's a mutilation, so it's cruel for that reason.” That's why he's excited to hear New York might become the first state in the country to ban declawing. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has to sign the bill that would forbid declawing for "cosmetic or aesthetic reasons." If the bill becomes law, those who violate it could face a ,000 fine. “Finally it's going to happen, and once that happens, I think it will create a domino effect. I'm pretty sure it will,” says Dr. Lavizzo. The New York Veterinary Medical Society opposes the bill, arguing that declawing should be allowed "when the alternative is abandonment or euthanasia." The group released a statement, saying in part "cats that would lose their home if not declawed face a higher risk of euthanasia than if their owner were able to care for them." However, Dr. Lavizzo says cat relinquishments have dropped 20 percent in Denver since the ban. “I'm not saying that's connected, but it does say that you know people are not relinquishing your cats because he can't get them declawed in Denver,” Dr. Lavizzo says.
