BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- A 40-member Chinese medical care and epidemic prevention team left here for Haiti on Sunday afternoon on a chartered flight, which also carried 20 tonnes of medical supplies, said the Ministry of Commerce (MOC).The MOC said earlier in the day that China had decided to provide medical supplies worth 18 million yuan (2.64 million U.S. dollars) in additional aid to quake-ravaged Haiti.The 20-tonne medical supplies included medicines, hygiene equipment, medical devices and camping equipment, said the ministry in a statement.Also onboard the plane would be four Chinese peace-keeping police officers, replacing the four who were killed in the earthquake. UNITED NATIONS, March 18 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday called upon the international community to render more support and provide more assistance to Afghanistan, and voiced its support for a leading coordination role by the United Nations in the reconstruction of the south Asian country.The appeal came as Li Baodong, the permanent Chinese representative to the United Nations, was speaking to a UN Security Council meeting on the current situation of Afghanistan.The international community must keep focused on Afghanistan, which is currently at a key transitional period, and increase support and assistance to enhance Afghan sovereignty and capacity for development, Li said.The international community should also step up the efforts to assist the country in strengthening its military and police forces, promoting the process of national reconciliation in the nation, he said.He said that China supports the leading coordination role played by the United Nations in helping Afghanistan in its reconstruction process.China had actively supported and participated in Afghanistan's peaceful reconstruction, he said, adding that China will continue to provide assistance to Afghanistan within its capacity.China had invited Afghan President Hamid Karzai to visit China on March 21-25, Li said, adding that he is confident that visit will achieve positive results.

KAMPALA, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Monday met officials of the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) amidst increased lobbying by international oil giants to enter the country's oil sector.A State House statement issued here said that the CNOOC officials who met Museveni at State House Entebbe, 40km south of the capital Kampala, expressed interest in joining Uganda's oil and gas sector by partnering up with Tullow, an Irish oil company.Tullow, which has oil blocks in western Uganda, is seeking a partner to help it start oil production in the country.The CNOOC meeting comes weeks after Italian oil giant, Eni Spa, also expressed interest in joining the country's oil sector, promising an oil refinery and a power plant.Eni wants to enter the sector by buying stakes of another oil company Heritage Oil which jointly operates two blocks with Tullow on a 50-50 percent venture.The Eni-Heritage deal which is yet to be concluded is embroiled in controversy as Tullow exercised a pre-emption move saying it has the first option to buy the Heritage stakes, a move the government said it would not accept because it would create a monopoly.Museveni told the CNOOC officials joined by Tullow officials that the government will discuss all proposals and announce its decision soon."President Museveni said that the government will discuss all proposals by companies operating in the oil and gas sector adding that the country looks forward to welcoming new companies," the statement said.The Museveni-CNOOC-Tullow meet also comes days after Aiden Heavey, Tullow's chief executive met Museveni urging Uganda to honor contractual obligations following the Eni-Heritage deal.Uganda's recently discovered oil is attracting a lot of attention from international oil giants.So far the country has discovered an estimated two billion barrels of oil and according to experts there is a possibility of discovering more.

BEIJING, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security Tuesday urged police nationwide to take initiatives in cracking serious crime cases and solving social conflicts to ensure a safe World Expo in Shanghai.Vice Minister Huang Ming said police should seriously crack down on illegal activities, including illegal use of guns and explosives, kidnapping of children and women, gang-related crimes and online pornography.Police in Shanghai and its neighboring regions were asked to reinforce security measures and increase street patrols, and mobilize local residents to ensure a safe environment for the upcoming World Expo.Huang said the police should learn from Beijing's experience of successfully safeguarding the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China in 2009.Police were also asked to visit grassroot level communities and villages to find prominent problems and help relevant authorities settle disputes.Shanghai's neighboring provinces, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Fujian, Shandong, Henan and Hubei, would reinforce security checks in air flights and trains, Huang said.Huang also urged the police to enforce the law in a reasonable and civilized manner and minimize disturbances to the public.The World Expo, to be hosted by China for the first time, will run from May 1 to Oct. 31.
