 GUANGZHOU, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Three people were confirmed dead in mud flows and strong winds caused by Typhoon Neoguri in south China's Guangdong Province, said the provincial flood-control headquarters on Sunday.     The typhoon claimed two lives in Shenzhen City, when a mud flow inundated a section of road under construction. One person was hit and killed by an aluminum sheet blown off a stadium roof by strong gales in Zhuhai City, according a headquarters official.     The headquarters did not identify the victims. Losses from suspension of industrial production and damage of embankments and telecommunications facilities were valued at 96 million yuan (14 million U.S. dollars).     According to the provincial observatory, the center of the storm is moving eastward to Shanwei City on the eastern coast of Guangdong, which is receiving up to 112 millimeters of rain per hour.     The headquarters said water levels in all major reservoirs in the province were under the danger mark as of Sunday. But the risks of mountain torrents and mud flows were still high, since rains brought by Neoguri were expected to continue.

Reconstruction should also pay great attention to the preservation of traditional and cultural relics.     When the local governments help farmers rebuild homes, officials should fully respect their will and mobilize more social aid, as well as governmental subsidies, the headquarters ordered.     It suggested that those involved in the rebuilding of transport, communication, energy and other infrastructure should first resume their operation and properly arrange their location in accordance with local geological conditions. The headquarters stressed the seriously-destroyed factories be rearranged to resume production in new sites and for the recovery of local agriculture as soon as possible.     It reminded all quake-relief officials the reconstruction would be long-term and a tough task for governments as it required scientific planning and an orderly procedure.

He attended the inauguration ceremony of China's consulate-general in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, met and reached agreement with the West Bengal's Governor and Chief Minister on ways to deepen friendly and multi-faceted cooperation between China and West Bengal.     He called upon Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and held talks with Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee in Delhi Monday. The two sides had an in-depth exchange of views and reached broad agreement on ways to further implement the common understanding reached by leaders of both countries and deepen the China-India strategic and cooperative partnership as well as issues of mutual interest.

  

CHENGDU, June 15 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao on Saturday ordered that the title of "heroic quake-relief force" be given to a helicopter regiment that showed loyalty and courage in rescue work following last month's major quake in southwest China. The command by Hu, also Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China, was announced at an award meeting here on Sunday.     The regiment of army aviation under the Chengdu Military Command did an excellent job in quake-relief missions and showed great loyalty, courage and dedication, the command said. Photo taken on May 16, 2008 shows that a Mi-171 transport helicopter is ready to transport people from quake-hit Maoxian County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, to a safe place. A Mi-171 transport helicopter engaging in quake relief work near the Yingxiu Township, Wenchuan County in southwest China's Sichuan Province crashed on Saturday afternoon, according to military sources    All Chinese military members should learn from the regiment, which put people's lives first, it said.     The regiment has dispatched 1,848 helicopter flights for rescue and transport missions since the quake on May 12 and evacuated 1,126 injured people from the region.     More than 619 tons of food, water and medicines have been delivered and 2,171 people stranded by the quake were transferred by the regiment.     One of the regiment's helicopters crashed in a deep forest ravine in Sichuan Province during a rescue mission on May 31, leaving all five crew and 13 passengers dead.     The honor awarded to the regiment was the top honor of all the regiment members and all military members who participated in quake-relief missions, Xu Caihou, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, said at the meeting.

(Xinhua Photo)    LONGNAN, Gansu, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao visited a Pakistani medical team in Longnan city in northwest China's Gansu Province Sunday afternoon.     Hu went to a tent and shook hands with several Pakistani medical workers at the First People's Hospital of Longnan City. "When the Chinese people suffered the devastating earthquake, the Pakistani people expressed concerns, offered relief materials and sent a medical team to us. The Chinese government and people feel deeply grateful," Hu said.     The medical team consists of 28 people. Hu praised them for their excellent skills and all-out efforts.     Hu said the team symbolized the friendship the Pakistani people cherished for the Chinese people and expressed his wish that the friendship would last forever.     The team members said they felt Chinese people's hospitality and vowed to do their best for the quake victims.
