EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - A man accused of a hit-and-run crash on Highway 57 in Ramona pleaded not guilty Thursday. A judge set the bail at million for Chase Richard. Richard is accused of swerving into Michelle Scott and driving with her bicycle attached to his car for more than two miles during Tuesday’s crash. In court Thursday, prosecutors said Richard removed the front hood and bumper and spray-painted the rear of his Ford Edge. Investigators said Richard appeared to be making a run for it when they arrived. He had a large suitcase and backpack in a running vehicle when he was arrested. Richard faces up to nine years in prison if convicted. DULZURA, Calif. (KGTV) — Firefighters battled a vegetation fire near the U.S.-Mexico border, a day after crews pretreated the area for a fire burning south of the border.The fire was reported along Marron Valley Rd. near Dulzura Thursday, according to Cal Fire San Diego. By 6:30 p.m. the fire was estimated to have grown to about 80 acres and was 10 percent contained. No structures were immediately threatened, Cal Fire said.Air and group fire resources were attacking the flames, Cal Fire added.Wednesday night, Cal Fire made air drops near Tecate after flames from a brush fire crept up to the border from the Mexico side of the border. During a quarterly call with shareholders Wednesday, Papa John's CEO John Schnatter cited national anthem protests in the NFL as one of the reasons for the company's falling stock price.According to ESPN, Schnatter also took veiled shots at NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for not putting a stop to the anthem protests."Leadership starts at the top and this is an example of poor leadership," Schnatter said. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - The son of sex offender Matthew Hedge pleaded not guilty Thursday in El Cajon to child molestation charges. Shaun Crocker, 34, molested a 13-year-old girl at least six times, prosecutors allege. Crocker appeared before a judge at the El Cajon courthouse on charges of lewd and lascivious acts on a child under 14. He was ordered to be held on million bail and return to court Aug. 16 for a readiness hearing.Crocker's birth certificate shows he is the son of Matthew Hedge, a sex offender convicted in 1989 of molesting four children. (KGTV) — Three U.S. citizens were arrested and 52 people were taken into custody in two smuggling attempts in the El Centro area early Friday.The first incident occurred just after 5 a.m., according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. A remote video surveillance system reported a stake bed truck and van suspected of smuggling near the border wall west of Mount Signal Road. Agents responded and stopped the truck as it traveled toward Highway 98, but the van continued on, CBP said.The driver of the truck, a 22-year-old U.S. citizen, admitted he was transporting individuals illegally in the rear cargo area of the truck. The truck was carrying 37 people, 36 adult Mexican nationals and one adult Guatemalan national, who were hiding under a black tarp in the truck bed, CBP said.RELATED: Leader of San Diego, Baja California maritime smuggling ring arrestedSoon afterward, the van that agents spotted earlier and followed was stopped.
