One COVID-19 vaccine in development may be ready for review in December.Executives at Novavax say they are enrolling volunteers for a second phase of clinical trials now. The data should be ready for review within a few months.Phase 1 data showed the two-dose vaccine in healthy adults produced antibodies in all participants. Tenderness and pain were the most frequent local symptoms. When the first COVID-19 vaccines are approved, we won't know a whole lot about their safety.“We’re going to learn as we go along. There are numerous case studies in our experience where, as vaccines were rolled out, we were quite confident with the safety profile, but that evolves,” said Dr. Jon Andrus, adjunct professor at George Washington University’s Milken Institute School of Public Health.“I think that these vaccines will be safe in the sense that they won’t cause a serious or permanent adverse event when tested in 10,000, 15,000, 20,000people,” said Dr. Paul A. Offit with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “Hopefully, that will also be true in post approval when it’s tested and seen in 20 million, 30 million people.”Based on other vaccine history, a COVID-19 vaccine will likely produce some sort of adverse reaction. It could be minor typical injection site issues or something more serious.Back in the 1950s, the very first massive polio vaccination program was stopped because it paralyzed some children and killed a handful. In the 70s, the swine flu vaccine caused a very small amount of rare neurological cases. There are other issues like an allergic reaction or seizure.Still though, experts say vaccines are one of the greatest advances in modern medicine in preventing unnecessary deaths.“There is no better cost-effective intervention that medical science has to offer with the exception of safe water and sanitation, so when you look at our life expectancy, vaccines have been incredibly important,” said Andrus. The Vaccine Injury Litigation Clinic handles cases of vaccine-related injuries and deaths. They have on average just over 600 people per year receive payouts from the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. But they admit vaccine injuries are still rare compared to the overall numbers of administered vaccines every year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says for every 1 million doses of vaccines that were distributed, one person was compensated. 2413

ORLANDO, Fla. — A federal judge is instructing the Census Bureau to text every 2020 census worker by Friday, letting them know the count of every U.S. resident is continuing through the end of the month and not ending next week, as the agency previously had announced in violation of her injunction. The new order issued late Thursday by U.S. District Lucy Koh in San Jose, California, instructs the Census Bureau to send out a mass text saying an Oct. 5 target data for finishing the nation’s head count is not in effect. She says the text should also say people can still answer the questionnaire through Oct. 31.A district court judge has ruled that the 2020 U.S. Census must continue through Oct. 31, despite an announcement earlier this week that the Census Bureau intended to conclude data collection by Monday. 824

OROVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Northern California authorities have arrested a woman they say scammed ,100 from a 75-year-old who lost a home in a wildfire last year that killed 85.The Butte County Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday the arrest of 29-year-old Brenda Rose Asbury for elder abuse, embezzlement and grand theft.Detectives say Asbury stole from an insurance settlement that the victim received after losing a home in the 2018 Camp Fire.A warrant for her arrest was issued in September.Asbury turned herself in to Butte County authorities on Monday after driving three days from Tulsa, Oklahoma, and on the advice of her attorney, Michael Erpino of Chico.Sheriff's office spokeswoman Megan McMann said Asbury is in jail on ,100 bail. She is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday. 793

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Students at El Camino High School have a chance to put their stamp on pop culture. They're designing shoes for the Vans Custom Culture competition.El Camino High School is one of just 500 schools in the country to be picked for the contest. More than 200 students submitted designs at the school, but only two will advance to the national competition.Sophomore Isiah Duran is one of the students whose design was chosen."I basically did what I thought was Oceanside," he says. "The pier, sunsets, the beach."The students could make designs based on two categories, "Local Flavor" and "Off the Wall.""It resonates with the younger culture," says El Camino Art Teacher Diego De La Luz. "It resonates with activities that range from biking to skateboarding and really just the Southern California vibe which Oceanside is all about."The winner will receive ,000 for their school's art department. Vans will also endow a scholarship for a student from the winning school to attend the Laguna Art Institute.De La Luz says the students will decide how to spend the money at the school if they win. He adds that ,000 would provide a big boost to the art department, especially as districts tighten their budgets and art programs are often among the first to be cut."Having that opportunity for the cash prize would cushion some of our artistic ambitions for the students," says De La Luz.Students say it's pretty amazing to try and design for a company they already love."I'm wearing Vans right now," says Junior Aymee Locke. "If I had my own design on a shoe and I get to show that off to everyone, I would totally do that. I think that's super cool."The schools have to turn in their designs by April 16. Public voting takes place from April 22 to May 3. The top 5 designs will be announced May 6-10 with the winners announced sometime between May 13 and 17. 1892
