President Donald Trump spent Thursday grappling with how to prevent more school massacres and address the gun debate gripping the country, offering solutions such as giving bonuses to teachers who undergo gun training."These people are cowards. They're not going to walk into a school if 20% of the teachers have guns -- it may be 10% or may be 40%. And what I'd recommend doing is the people that do carry, we give them a bonus. We give them a little bit of a bonus," Trump said. "They'll frankly feel more comfortable having the gun anyway. But you give them a little bit of a bonus."He repeated his suggestion that some teachers get trained to handle firearms as a deterrent to shooters and disparaged "gun-free zones.""I don't want teachers to have guns. I want certain highly adept people -- people that understand weaponry, guns. If they really have that aptitude -- because not everybody has aptitude for gun -- but if they have the aptitude, I think a concealed permit for having teachers and letting people know that there are people in the building with guns, you won't have -- in my opinion -- you won't have these shootings," the President said.Gun-free zones, meanwhile, are appealing to criminals, he said."We have to harden those schools, not soften them. A gun-free zone, to a killer, or somebody that wants to be a killer, that's like going in for the ice cream. That's like saying, 'Here I am, take me,' " Trump said at the White House."They see that as such a beautiful target," Trump said. "They live for gun-free zones."He also disparaged school shooting drills, saying they were tough on the kids."Active shooter drills is a very negative thing, I'll be honest with you," he said. "I think that's a very negative thing to be talking about. I don't like it. I don't want to tell my son 'you're going to have to participate in an active shooter drill. RAMONA (KGTV) - Seven acres burned in a brush fire near downtown Ramona Saturday, according to CalFire. At 6 p.m. Cal Fire PIO Issac Sanchez said the fire was 20% contained.The fire burned near Montecito Road and North Ramona Street.Hundreds of neighbors were evacuated from the Ramona Mountain Valley Apartments, where the fire burned right up to their fence. Juliette Farey, a mother and resident at the complex said she was coming back from her son's birthday party and when she saw the smoke, she knew her home was at risk."We were scared for our lives," she said.Farey said the unruly gold bushes on the other side of the fence were out of control, and wished they would be better maintained to keep a fire from happening in the future.Sanchez said the fire started with a pile of debris in the riverbed then spread to nearby grass. Sixty-five fire fighters responded, working to protect neighbors, two planes and a helicopter also jumped into action to help. Farey believes homeless who live in the riverbed started the fire, saying the high rent is to blame. "They probably lit a fire in the river bottom to stay warm," she said.Other residents were terrified, saying they've never experienced a scare like this."There was just this wall of smoke. I grabbed our animals and my daughters," Angelina Rios said police banged on their door urging them to get out and that's when they saw the wall of smoke steps away.Her daughter Destiny Minjares described the fear gripping her and her neighbors, that turned to excitement as a helicopter soared just over their heads dropping water.Destiny said they got splashed and everyone cheered after the successful maneuver, a feeling that quickly faded as they saw the fire was still raging nearby.Firefighters got a handle on the fire around 6 p.m. The evacuations have been lifted. All road closures have been lifted as well. Firefighters are expected to be at the scene for several hours.This is a developing story. 10News will update as details become available.  2101

RAINBOW, Calif. (KGTV) — The wildfires in Australia destroyed many parts of the Outback. But they have also touched off a massive wave of support around the world. Everyone is searching for ways to help not just the families and firefighters, but the animals deprived of their homes. A woman from the tiny town of Rainbow is hoping her handiwork will help the Australian wildlife in a big way.Symphony Ariosta, 31, is a true animal lover. "I love animals. If I could, I would run a rescue myself," Ariosta said. Scientists at the University of Sydney estimate at least one billion animals have been killed in the months-long wildfires. Seeing the images of the animals and the flames on the news reminded Ariosta of the tragedy her family experienced in the 2007 Rice Canyon Fire in Fallbrook. "It's heartbreaking," Ariosta said. "I feel, no matter where in the world you are, if you can help, why not?"She wondered what she could do without breaking the bank. She searched online and found "Rescue Craft Co," a group dedicated to handicrafts."There's wildlife pouches, there are bat wraps, there are little marsupial bags, hanging pouches," Ariosta explained. Crocheting birds nests is Ariosta's go-to."They're quick, and they're easy to pump out," Ariosta said, with her crochet hook in hand. "So it's kind of my favorite thing to do."In the last three days, she recruited several people from Rainbow and neighboring Fallbrook to join her cause. "Bringing everyone together in that way over a common kind of unifier has really just made a huge difference, and it's brought our community together as well," Ariosta said. Cyber experts say you should first focus on protecting your personal information that could have been compromised. Tekesha Saffold realized her account was breached when she logged in, but soon realized it wasn’t her account. She reached out to Facebook by phone, but she got an automated recording directing her to their troubleshooting page online. “I have no access to my account at this point, and it has all my information in it,” Saffold says. Saffold completed the steps Facebook told her to take in order to gain access back into her account, but it didn’t work.Cyber expert Fred Kneip, with Cyber GRX, says the most important thing to do is figure out what other accounts you sign into using your Facebook credentials. “The first things hackers do is take those passwords or credentials,” he explains. Hackers try to apply those passwords to banking sites and healthcare sites to get more information, and ultimately, steal your identity. That’s why Kneip says to focus on your passwords.“If you are updating your passwords and using unique passwords, that’s the safest way to address this,” Kneip says.He also suggests turning on the dual-factor notification on Facebook. It sends you a text with a set of numbers you have to plug into get into your account, along with your password. He says it’s twice the protection.   1592

Kevin McCarthy was elected House minority leader Wednesday, according to members of Congress in the closed-door meeting where the elections took place, meaning the California Republican will lead House GOP members after Speaker Paul Ryan leaves Capitol Hill at the end of his term in January.The vote was 159-43.With Ryan headed for the exits, McCarthy, the current No. 2 House Republican, was long viewed as the heavy favorite to become minority leader in the new Congress, the highest-ranking GOP leadership post with Republicans in the minority after losing control of the House of Representatives in the 2018 midterms.McCarthy faced a long-shot challenge from Rep. Jim Jordan, the co-founder of the conservative Freedom Caucus, but the California Republican is expected to prevail in his bid to become minority leader. Ryan announced in April that he would not seek re-election and has endorsed McCarthy, the House majority leader for the past four years, to be his successor.Trump and McCarthy have spoken about leadership races recently, territory that Presidents usually avoid so not as to seem like they're alienating members of their own party. In private conversations, Trump has pushed for Jordan and another close conservative ally -- Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina -- to have the top Republican positions on key committees, according to a source familiar. McCarthy doesn't dole out those positions-- that's for the House GOP Steering Committee -- but plenty of people on the Steering Committee are loyal to McCarthy and would heed his word. As of Wednesday afternoon it was not clear where Jordan or Meadows would land.A separate source confirmed to CNN that Jordan is interested in ranking member position on Judiciary Committee in order to check Democratic investigations that will be led by Rep. I think very highly of him. I think he's a very good conservative, showed up a lot of leadership. He certainly earned the position," Meuser told reporters on Tuesday. "On the same note, I think Jim Jordan is a smart, tough, focused individual. So I respect him as well. We'll see over the next couple of days."Next in line for the GOP leadership hierarchy in the new Congress is Rep. Steve Scalise, the current No. 3 House Republican, who is vying for the position of minority whip in the new Congress. Scalise, as majority whip, gained a higher national profile after he was injured last year in a shooting during a Republican congressional baseball practice. Scalise is not facing a challenge for the position.Rep. Liz Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is running unopposed for the position of Republican conference chair, the third-ranking position in the leadership hierarchy with Republicans in the minority.
