SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousands of Californians gathered Saturday night across the state to protest the newest restrictions put in place by Governor Gavin Newsom to slow the spread of the coronavirus.Last Saturday, Syndie Ly helped organize the first "Curfew Breakers" rally. "Across 16 cities, we had 10,000 people show up," she said.Ly lives in Huntington Beach and said in four days their Facebook page "blew up."She said people are frustrated by the curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. saying it is an overreach, "when the government starts telling you when you can leave the house, how many people you can invite over to your own home."What's happening in the U.S. reminds her of when her family escaped in Vietnam."I was born in China and my parents emigrated to Vietnam, and we came here [to the U.S.] legally but we came here as refugees to escape North Vietnam during the fall of Vietnam ... Just being told what to do, a lot of the government overreach, I feel we're actually on the brink of getting back to that and that's why I'm involved in this," said Ly.She said between layoffs and businesses being forced to close, the impact on people's livelihoods is worse than the virus itself."It's our lives, and we feel we are responsible individuals that can make our own decisions," Ly said.The rallies will continue every Saturday, starting at 10:01 p.m. until Ly and the organizers see change, she added.In San Diego, a rally is planned for Saturday at 10:01 p.m. at 910 N. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This New Year’s Day organ donor heroes will be honored on the Donate Life Rose Parade Float.One of those heroes is a Everardo Martinez, a San Diego father of three whose life was cut short by a fatal aneurysm. After Martinez passed, his wife Adriana worked closely with Lifesharing San Diego to donate his organs.“It’s comforting, it’s comforting to know my husband lives on through those recipients,” said Adriana. “I’m deeply honored my husband was able to transform their lives.”Everardo was able to save three lives with his selfless gift.His wife and children traveled to Irwindale to help decorate the Lifesharing float that will honor Everardo and 43 other organ donors. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The sailor hit by a spinning helicopter blade earlier this week at MCAS Camp Pendleton has died.MCAS Camp Pendleton said the sailor died Saturday morning from injuries sustained after the spinning tail rotor blade of a UH-01Y Venom Marine helicopter struck him.The helicopter was on deck at MCAS Camp Pendleton when the incident occurred just after 6 p.m. Wednesday.RELATED: Sailor critically injured by spinning helicopter blade at MCAS Camp PendletonThe sailor was brought to Scripps La Jolla Medical Facility with critical injuries after the incident.Officials are withholding the sailor's name pending family notification. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The sticker-shock of college can be daunting, but with planning and some research there is financial aid out there for the taking.To get the process started families must fill out the Free Application for Student Aid, better known as the FAFSA.The FAFSA is roughly 156 questions and looks at a family's financial situation.Colleges nationwide use the FAFSA to determine the amount of financial aid to award to students,The form can now be filled out online but college planning expert Ron Caruthers also recommends printing a paper copy for reference because it contains more guidance.“It’s my bread and butter because so many families really make mistakes and don’t understand the process," said Caruthers. "I’ve worked for 25+ years helping families pick schools that have money, not make mistakes on the FAFSA and save a ton of money on college.”Families can start submitting FAFSA’s October 1 and the deadline is March 2.Caruthers recommends doing so by January.He says a major mistake families make is listing assets they're not required to, including their home, IRA's, and personal property.What you should list: cash, stocks and bonds that aren't in a retirement account, and equity in a rental home.“This is an area of enormous stress because, for a lot of families, next to their house this is going to be their biggest investment, and it's going to come in a very short period of time, unlike a house they can pay off over 30 years,” said Caruthers.He says it's important to be detail-oriented on the FAFSA, for example, making sure you put income in the right line.
