SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University students can earn extra credit in a sociology class if they take a quiz calculating their "white privilege."Professor Dae Elliott is the purveyor of the 20-question quiz that urges students to evaluate situations and determine if their skin color has benefitted them in some way.Featuring scenarios like: “I can be late to a meeting without having the lateness reflect on my race,” and, “I can choose blemish or bandages in flesh color and have them more or less match my skin,” the quiz ranks a person’s privilege by tallying up the points they get for each question.In short, the higher one’s score, the higher their privilege.“I basically made it clear there’s a variety of privileges,” said Elliott, “we all have certain privileges.”Students of all ethnicities can take the quiz and can earn the same extra credit regardless of their white privilege score, according to Elliott.SDSU College Republicans president Brandon Jones says the quiz is racially divisive and his friends in Elliott’s class feel like they are being singled out.“I think what she was trying to do is racially bring people together,” said Jones, “but instead she’s excluding a whole group of people on campus.”Elliott says the evaluation is not about color, but a way in which everyone can understand each other better.“We need to listen to each other,” said Elliott, “give each other the same respect we give our own subjectivity.”Click here to see the quiz 10News obtained from a student in the class. 1557

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some former students of Brightwood College finally have something to celebrate after their school shut down earlier this month.Town & Country San Diego Mission Valley, where the graduation was scheduled to held, will now host the ceremony free of charge.Karlene Carpenter is one of those students looking forward to the graduation ceremony. She spent countless hours with her classmates, studying and preparing for the next phase of their lives. "The curiculum was amazing. This happened a few days before Carpenter was scheduled to finish the program. Teachers stepped in to help. Carpenter said some clinical instructors worked for free to help them finish. At first, it looked like the graduation ceremony scheduled for January 18th at Town & Country San Diego in Mission Valley was not going to happen since the school was out of business."We still had the date booked, but there was no way to pay for it," Carpenter said. "I went to school a little later in life. You want to walk across that stage, you want to wear your cap and gown, you want to participate in the pinning ceremony inducting you into nursing."Then came a little holiday cheer thanks to Santa's helpers, in the form of Town & Country staff. "We have extended to them a complimentary graduation. Everyone in their families can see them and just really enjoy what they worked so hard for," said Susan Penman, director of sales and marketing at the facility. From stressful classes to a sudden college shutdown, it was the news Carpenter was more than happy to hear. "Thank you from the bottom of my heart. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego's transit service is getting millions in state funding, as part of billions being awarded to projects throughout the state.San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System was awarded .09 million to update transit routes, add zero-emission buses, and create a new route between Imperial Beach and the Otay Mesa Border Crossing.MTS said they plan to purchase 11 zero-emission buses to operate on the proposed Route 925 between Otay Mesa Transit Center and IB.RELATED: Under-utilized MTS land could be used for affordable housing, report saysThe transit service will also use the funds to improve the America Plaza station, Old Town Transit Center, and rail infrastructure on select lines.“This is a highly competitive grant program. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University is alerting students who may have been exposed to meningococcal meningitis.The university says they were notified that a current student has a “probable case of meningococcal meningitis.”The university said in a tweet that it is immediately hosting two clinics for those who attended specific events with the student. The events were the Delta Sigma Phi Formal, held Friday, April 12, from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Spark Encore Event Center; and the Delta Sigma Phi Social Event, which was held Saturday, April 13, from 9:30 p.m. to Midnight, at the organization’s chapter facility. Students who attended the events are urged to attend one of the two clinics that are being offered for free at SDSU. The most common symptoms of meningococcal meningitis are fever, headache and a stiff neck, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - SeaWorld is seeing an unusually large number of sea lion rescues along the local coastline this winter."Most of those rescued are coming in emaciated and dehydrated," said Jennifer Zarate, SeaWorld Senior Animal Care Specialist.Zarate says since early December, SeaWorld has rescued 25 sea lions along the coastline."Definitely a little concerning," said Zarate.That is about three times the amount they normally see. Usually, rescue season begins in March, so these rescues are coming early. Those needing rescuing this winter are younger than normal, less than two years old. The cause is a mystery, but Zarate says those early winter storms could be playing a role. The big swells may be tiring the pups out, causing them to burn too many calories. The weather may also be impacting their food sources.."The winter storms may be pushing schools of fish out further than seal lion pups can get to. That's probably the reason why they might not find as much fish as they normally would," said Zarate. After being rescued by SeaWorld, the pups now doing well. So far, medical tests haven't turned up anything else unusual. The pups are gaining back weight as expected. Next week, the first three of those recently rescued will be released.SeaWorld says the coastline in Orange County has also seen an increase in sea lion rescues.
