San Diego (KGTV) -- County leaders are taking steps to provide more access to coronavirus testing to some of the local communities hit hardest by the pandemic. The new outreach program will begin with a free new testing site at the Mexican Consulate at 1549 India St. starting at 8 a.m. Monday and will run until 3:30 p.m.No appointments are needed. The County of San Diego has been trying to expand testing and outreach in the Latino community, which has been the hardest hit by the coronavirus.Of the more than 42,000 confirmed cases in the county, Latinos account for 63% of that total.County and community leaders say the Consulate’s opening as a testing location will provide an accessible, safe way for San Diego’s Mexican and Latino communities to receive COVID-19 testing. The additional testing locations coming online in the coming weeks will function on a 14-day rotation. The dates and locations of all of these sites have yet to be announced. 960

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As San Diego’s Pride celebration approaches, a new homeless shelter has opened specifically focusing on members of the LGBTQ community. It’s operated by the Interfaith Shelter Network, which just opened a new branch in Hillcrest after receiving grants from the Pride Foundation and the Cushman Foundation.Abigail Shrestha, the manager of the rotational shelter programs at Interfaith, said they opened the new shelter because they recognized the need.“It’s a population that has quite a bit of discrimination and other issues, so it’s beneficial to have something that supports the community,” said Shrestha. The operation is based out of Hillcrest, but the shelter location will rotate between churches in Interfaith’s network. As of Monday, one week after they opened, they had six clients, though it can hold up to 12 people. Shrestha said she expects it to be full by the end of the week.Interfaith operates shelters around the county which are all LGBTQ friendly, but this is the first one that is targeted for that community. Mainly, said Shrestha, because of the unique circumstances of their housing instability.“Many of the clients, especially the youth, are forced out of their homes. Some families will not recognize positively their choices, and they are kicked out,” she said.Their main goal is to get the residents into permanent housing. Once in the shelter, the residents are paired with a case manager, who helps guide them through the different resources that are available. For more information on the shelter, visit the Interfaith Shelter Network website. 1599

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - At least two former students of a coding bootcamp in downtown San Diego received refunds after a Team 10 story earlier this summer.Sean Calma and Lane, who declined to give his last name, were enrolled at Origin Code Academy. They both said they were promised one-on-one instruction, which they did not receive. Neither had previous coding experience, so they both asked many questions before enrolling."One time, [the instructor] didn't even know what he was looking at on my computer screen. A second time, he was like, I don’t know what that is. Third time, he asked to go ask another instructor," Lane told Team 10 back in June.CEO Jeff Winkler said coding is difficult, but would be willing to talk to the students about getting their money back. During a previous Team 10 interview, he pointed to many satisfied students and dozens of graduates, including one who recently got a job at Facebook.Winkler did not respond to Team 10's request for comment regarding the refunds.Coding bootcamps are regulated by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE). Origin Code Academy was previously operating without approval. The academy appealed its citation, its fine was reduced, and as of August, it is allowed to operate. As part of its approval, it had to pay back students who asked for refunds. Both Calma and Lane could not talk about their refunds the received after Team 10's story because both had to sign a non-disclosure agreement before getting their money back.A spokesperson for the BPPE told Team 10: "The Bureau encourages Origin Code Academy students who have not yet received a requested refund to contact the Bureau so we can investigate their claims. If any of the subjects in your story are still waiting for refunds please encourage them to reach out." 1809
