For U.S. Border Patrol agents who guard the area between the U.S. and the part of Mexico just south of San Diego, seeing people trying to cross the border illegally isn't uncommon."That's a daily occurrence," says Jeff Stephenson, a patrol agent. Border Patrol agents like Stephenson are tasked with protecting 60 linear miles between the two countries and 930 miles of coastline. This year, the U.S. government added 14 miles of a primary wall that stands 18-feet high. Next year, Stephenson says a 30-foot-tall secondary wall that will stand behind the primary wall it will be completed. "It gives our agents more time, because it's a much more significant challenge," Stephenson says. "This can’t be scaled the way the old primary fence could."The new bollard walls replace a system Stephenson says was easy for people to climb over. The primary wall used to be an 8 to 10-foot steel wall made from Vietnam War-era landing mats. The secondary fence was made of steel mesh. "That worked pretty well for a while," Stephenson says. "With the development of power tools and cordless power tools, smugglers could come over the primary fence and hit the secondary fence and cut through it and be gone in two minutes or less."Starting in 2015, Stephenson says agents in San Diego started to see an increase in people crossing the border illegally coming from places other than Mexico."That presents a significant challenge, because the processing of those people and as far as a government wide approach is a much more significant challenge with more time involved and more work that goes into managing someone from another country," Stephenson says. "If someone is from Mexico, it's a lot easier to bring them back to Mexico." Stephenson says the situation along this border is a crisis."When we see the large influx of people crossing the border illegally and as Border Patrol, we have no choice but to manage and deal with that," Stephenson says. He says managing the number of people attempting to come into the U.S. is overwhelming. "We simply don't have and haven't had the resources to manage that sheer number of people, not to mention we're tasked with protecting a border, enforcing the immigration laws between the ports of entry, but then we have all these sorts of people," Stephenson says. "We're supposed to house them, feed them, and continue them down the train and set them up for their cases and process them, and we've struggled to deal with the sheer number of people, so it's absolutely a crisis."As immigration continues to be a huge topic nationwide, Stephenson says people should know how important it is to protect the hundreds of miles that separate Mexico and the United States. "When you don't have border security, you're leaving yourself exposed,” he says. “You're open to anybody and anything that may want to enter the country that may do harm do us harm.”As crews continue to build miles of border fencing, Stephenson says it's only a piece to helping agents do their job. "Putting something as ‘the answer,’ that's not a realistic thing. You're going to face different challenges as time goes on, but this helps us on the front lines for Border Patrol agents and the work we do,” he says. “When you're talking about larger immigration and everything, that's for the politicians to decide. Gregory and Nina Barta were on vacation when they saw surveillance video of three people allegedly stealing from their home in Romulus, Michigan. Two of the suspects are complete strangers, but the third is their own 17-year-old son.The Bartas said that their son has had issues with truancy and incorrigibility but nothing like this. "It was devastating to see our own son carrying our belongings out of our house," said Gregory Barta. "It's very troubling but also very scary because we have daughters. What would have happened if they were home?"The couple immediately notified Romulus Police. Captain Joshua Monte said they are investigating and that the three suspects could face charges of home invasion and receiving and concealing stolen property. "You feel helpless," Nina Barta said.The couple's son had been living at home, but after the alleged burglary Monday afternoon, he didn't return. They tried to reach him through social media because he doesn't have a cell phone."Nothing he took was his. Everything was ours," said Gregory Barta. The items stolen include the couple's computer, jewelry, tools, televisions, and three firearms that were in a safe. Wednesday afternoon, Action News learned that police had taken the couple's son into custody. It's possible he saw his mother's Facebook post because he went to a store in Garden City where police said he told a worker that Romulus Police were looking for him. Garden City detained the teen for Romulus Police.Police said some of the stolen items were recovered, but not the guns.Captain Monte said investigators are still trying to identify and locate the two other suspects seen on surveillance video. GAITHERSBURG, Md. -- Under the fluorescent lights, inside a series of labs, researchers believe they may have cracked the code to create a vaccine for the new coronavirus, which has officially named COVID-19.“It’s rapidly evolving,” said Dr. Gregory Glenn, president of research and development at the Maryland-based company Novavax. “As a company, we are very invested in looking at how to protect people against infectious diseases.”Novavax is one of several pharmaceutical companies around the world, racing to develop a vaccine for the strain of the coronavirus, which recently emerged in Wuhan, China.“We have to puzzle-solve with vaccines,” Dr. Glenn said. “We think about: what do we want to have the immune response to target? Because that should block the infection and stop the illness and that’s the goal here.”He showed a three-dimensional computerized depiction of what the virus looks like.“The coronavirus – corona being ‘crown’ – has spikes,” he said. “Those spikes have a very important function. This shorter time frame is nothing new for the company; they developed an Ebola vaccine within 90 days ready for testing – but there’s a catch.It can take years for a vaccine to get approved, but under dire circumstances sometimes they can be used through something called “expanded access” or “compassionate use” – meaning, the vaccine can be used in humans, before it’s fully licensed.“That happened with Ebola – they didn’t have a licensed vaccine, but they were able to use it under ‘compassionate use,’ they developed evidence that it was working,” Dr. Glenn said.As for a fully approved coronavirus vaccine, experts say that would take longer.“A vaccine in a year would be record-setting time, but not in time to probably have much impact for this disease outbreak,” said Dr. Eric Toner with the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.However, if the coronavirus sticks around or comes back stronger in a second wave of the disease, Dr. Glenn said they want to be ready.“We know time is of the essence here,” he said.So far, approximately 73,000 people have been infected and more than 1,800 people have died from the most recent strain of the coronavirus. 2653
