EL CAJON (CNS) - A man who barged onto a school bus full of children in Campo and pulled a knife on the driver pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor child endangerment on Thursday.Matthew Douglas Barker, 37, is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 22.El Cajon Superior Court Judge Robert Amador said he would likely suspend a 6-year prison term and sentence Barker to a year in jail, then order suspend a 6-year prison term and sentence Barker to a year in jail, then order him released to a long-term residential facility while on felony probation.Sheriff's officials said the school bus was pulling away from a stop in the 900 block of Jeb Stuart Road in Campo when the driver noticed a man running toward it about 8:30 a.m. on May 25.RELATED: Good Samaritans wrestle armed man off school bus filled with Campo Elementary studentsThinking the approaching pedestrian was a parent trying to stop the bus for a child who had missed it, the driver pulled to a stop and opened the front door of the coach, sheriff's Sgt. William Uelen said.Barker then began to board the vehicle, which was full of Campo Elementary School students, prompting the driver to inform him that he was not allowed to do so. When the intruder refused to stop, the driver tried to physically block him from getting into the passenger area, Uelen said.Seeing the two men fighting, a grandmother of one of the students hurried aboard to try to help the driver. As the struggle between the three escalated, the assailant pulled a knife, Uelen said.At that point, a second bystander entered the bus and intervened.After a scuffle, he was able to pry the weapon away from Barker and pull him off the bus.Meanwhile, an older student ushered the other children to the back of the vehicle, called out for help to some parents who were still nearby and helped the young students get out of the bus through a back door and rear windows.Arriving deputies arrested Barker, a Campo resident, without further incident. No injuries were reported.Barker was not on drugs, but surveillance video on the bus showed that he was not in his right state of mind, said Deputy District Attorney Taren Brast. 2182

Dozens of people are gathering outside of the TCF Center in Downtown Detroit, trying to get inside to challenge votes which are being counted.People outside of the center say they are not being let in to challenge the votes. The Detroit Health Department said TCF Center is at capacity and that's what police are enforcing.Republicans are hoping to challenge the vote and claimed they were unfairly being kept outside where the absentee ballots are being counted. EL CAJON, Calif., (KGTV) — The combination of good old fashioned police work and advancements in DNA science helped put an Oregon man behind bars after he killed a La Mesa man in 2006. Today, Hon. Judge Robert Amador announced Zachary Bunney's sentence: 12 years in a California prison for voluntary manslaughter. Before his sentence was announced, Bunney read an apology letter to the family of Scott Martinez. "I just wanted to say I'm sorry for the pain that this has caused the Martinez family. If I could go back in time and change the course of events that led to this, I would. I know that words cannot bring back to life, but I am truly sorry."Bunney referred to the night of June 27, 2006. La Mesa Police said Bunney went into 47-year-old Scott Martinez's apartment and used a sword to stab Martinez 30 times, killing him. For 12 years, Bunney evaded police, and the case went cold. Until this January, investigators linked the killer's DNA left on a bloody tissue paper, to Bunney's distant relative who was registered on a public genealogy database. "The defendant's DNA was uploaded into the system," Deputy District Attorney Brian Erickson said. "A relative of his had uploaded her DNA, and then they do the family tree backwards, and they were able to trace it through that."Detectives discovered that the DNA on the bloody tissue belonged to Oregon resident Zachary Bunney. "I didn't think anything like this would be what cracked the case," Martinez's daughter, Angelina Panek said. By November, Bunney pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. In exchange for dismissing the murder charge, his stipulated agreement was that he would get 12 years in state prison. "The amount of years that he was on the run, and this is the amount of years he is going to be given as a sentence. It was a sign. And I had to take it," Panek said. Panek said she will always wear her father's ashes in her special necklace, knowing that he is watching over her and her family. "I'm just grateful that this day has come. (KGTV) - Surveillance video has recently captured multiple incidents of what appears to be a thief returning over and over to prey upon elderly residents of the Salvation Army apartment building in El Cajon.Apartment staff at the building on South Anza Street say there have been at least five robberies between October and Christmas Eve. Each appears to include the same thief."He's the lowest form of life in my book," building superintendent Alex Harmon told 10News. "To prey on the elderly. They've got walkers for crying out loud."In one incident captured on video, the man approached a 97-year-old woman taking a walk on the sidewalk outside the building. He was seen opening her bag, which was placed on her walker, then removing an item and walking away.The woman later told building staff that he had struck up a conversation about her walker and that she had offered him candy. She says he opened her bag and instead of taking candy, stole her wallet.In a separate incident, the suspected thief and what appears to be a lookout are seen carefully observing an elderly woman walking by. One man then turned and followed her around the corner. She told 10News that's when he raced up and grabbed her gold necklace, breaking off her gold cross, and running off.Multiple police reports have been filed with El Cajon Police Department, which is investigating. 1389
