SAN DIEGO (KTGV) - The City of San Diego could be looking at spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to figure out what to do next with a vacant city-owned building in the downtown area.A letter obtained by 10News shows the city is looking into proposals for additional services regarding the building at 101 Ash St.The Aug. 14 letter to the deputy director of architectural engineering and parks division outlined a proposal with costs for services estimated at 2,000."I think this is a ridiculous waste of money," said Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry. "What I proposed on Aug. 6 at the council meeting is still what I think the city should be doing, and that is to get into a room and negotiate with all the parties that have a financial interest."The downtown building at 101 Ash St. has been sitting vacant for most of the last four years, and as it continues to sit empty, taxpayers are footing the ,000 per day bill. As 10News previously reported, in 2016 the city approved a lease-to-own agreement for the building, valued at million.The idea was to move upward of 1,100 city employees into the facility. But officials quickly discovered a series of problems requiring major renovations to the site's 19 floors. In December 2019, the city finally began moving workers into the building, only to vacate them a month later when the county found traces of asbestos.This month, City Council leaders voted 5-4 — with Council Members Vivian Moreno, Monica Montgomery, Barbara Bry, and Georgette Gómez voting in opposition — to request monthly updates on the building's status and costs for several options presented by Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office.According to the latest proposal letter, "The City has requested Kitchell to identify potential cost and schedule savings through further studies and investigations. Kitchell has added Jackson and Blanc Power Systems Testing to our team to perform diagnostic testing of the HVAC and Electrical systems to establish a baseline of operation. Upon completion of the diagnostic testing, Kitchell will develop four options for improving 101 Ash Street."The letter outlined several options that would eventually be presented to the city if leaders went with the proposal, including bare requirements to reoccupy the building, fire/life/safety recommendations, and potentially demolishing and replacing the existing building.The mayor's options for this building have included putting millions of dollars more into the building for the needed repairs, buying out the lease, pursuing a new landlord, trying to renegotiate its lease, or walking away entirely, the last of which could risk litigation and credit damage.When asked about the proposal letter obtained by ABC 10News, the mayor's office responded that the city's Communication Department provided information.A spokesperson for the city told ABC 10News, "Many documents, including this letter, may not be final. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A beloved gorilla has died at the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens. The zoo says Zura, a 39-year-old Western lowland gorilla, was being treated for “long-term digestive issues” but her condition recently had worsened and she died Friday.Zura arrived in San Francisco in 1982 from the Columbus Zoo, where her grandmother was Colo. Colo, who died in 2017, was widely known as the first gorilla in the world to be born in captivity. Tanya Peterson, CEO of the San Francisco Zoological Society, says Zura “had a beautiful, distinctive face and a one-of-a-kind personality" and she will be missed. 620

San Diego (KGTV)- It’s been one year since the deadly bluff collapse in Encinitas, killing three members of the same family. The husband and father of two of the women is still calling for changes along the beach.Dr. Pat Davis says this past year has been tough after losing wife Julie Davis, daughter Annie Clave and sister-in-law Elizabeth Charles.The family was out for a day at the beach last August when suddenly the bluff gave out.“It was important for me that this kind of accident never is able to happen to any other family,” says Davis.Davis says since the tragic accident, there has been little change at Grandview beach. “There’s very few new signs warning people about these cliffs.”Davis is calling on local and state leaders to stabilize the bluffs. He’s hoping a new bill will help. S.B. 1090 offers solutions like sand replenishment. It currently sits in the Senate.“We got over 4,000 signatures in one month of people supporting the bill.”In the meantime, Davis is thanking the community for its continued support. A park bench sits at the top of Grandview Beach, honoring his family members.“Not that there’s an easy side of learning to live with the loss and one of your children but, certainly family support and community support has been a great help in allowing my family to move forward.”Davis says community members also came together to place another memorial bench in their neighborhood. 1423

Margot Schein and Julian Parris told 10News they made the decision to get married at Costco because, after meeting on a dating app, they decided to have their first date at the store. According to Schein, the couple decided to wed at Costco on their three-year anniversary. The wedding included a custom-made cake from the store, an archway and pallets to hold up bouquets of flowers. Staff at the store even took the time to set up chairs for the event as well as decorate a portion of the Costco with rose petals. “I feel like we have a whole new Costco family,” Margot said. 720

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) – It’s one of the most widely prescribed antibiotics in the country. It's called Cipro and the side effects could lead to your death. Experts are now calling for tighter controls on these prescriptions to protect the public.Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner spoke to former Cipro users in San Diego who say they hit rock bottom after taking the medication.“I felt like I was in the pit of hell,” says Annie Spackman from Chula Vista. She describes it as the darkest time of her life. “I didn't know how much more I could handle,” she adds. After taking the antibiotic Cipro, she tells us, “My knees, my ankles [and] my feet [were in] pain. Just shooting pain.”“[I had] burning sensations in my muscles, my joints, my tendons [and] my ligaments,” says Tom Ingoglia, who lives in Pacific Beach. He says his health also spiraled after taking Cipro. “I had pain throughout my body,” he adds.Spackman says she suffered from panic attacks, brain fog and depression. “You feel lonely [and] helpless,” she tells us.She says with faith, she pulled through. Yet, Florence Summers says her daughter, Deana, did not. “She parked her car on the side of the interstate and walked in front of a semi,” she cries.Her family blames Deana's suicide on side effects from Cipro, which she began taking just four months before her death. "It was not her. She would have never, ever, ever done something like that," adds Summers.Cipro is one of the brand names for a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones. Another brand name is Levaquin.Since 2015, the FDA has recognized a syndrome related to taking these drugs. It's called fluoroquinolone-associated disability. The FDA added black box warnings to these drugs, citing disabling and potentially irreversible side effects, including suicidal thoughts. However, some experts say that no one is reading that warning, buried in a medication insert.“We have suicides after 1 or 2 days of antibiotics,” says Dr. Charles Bennett. He’s a nationally recognized medication safety expert and says it's a big problem. “The risks outweigh the benefits,” he adds.A review of the FDA’s data shows more than 20,000 reports of psychiatric side effects, like anxiety and depression and 174 suicides connected to these antibiotics since 1998. Doctors in the U.S. wrote 29.7 million prescriptions for these drugs in 2016 alone, according to the CDC.Dr. Bennett has filed a petition with the FDA, asking that doctors who prescribe this medicine get patients to sign a release that they understand the risks before taking the drugs.The FDA told us it is reviewing Dr. Bennett's request for a new warning, adding, "It is important that health care providers and patients are aware of both the risks and benefits of fluoroquinolones."We reached out to Bayer which makes Cipro. The drug maker sent the following statement.“The health and safety of patients who use Bayer products is our top priority, and Bayer expresses its sympathies to the family of [Deana].Cipro? (ciprofloxacin) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, an important class of medications that treat a wide range of bacterial infections, many of which are serious and can be life-threatening. All medicines have potential side effects and the risks are communicated to physicians and patients in FDA-approved product labeling. The Cipro label contains FDA-approved language advising physicians and their patients about the potential side effects associated with the use of this therapy, including specific warnings about the risks of central nervous system and other psychiatric effects.The safety and efficacy of Bayer’s fluoroquinolones have been demonstrated in clinical trials involving more than 90,000 patients and extensive clinical experience in more than 800 million patients. Cipro was originally approved by the FDA in 1987 and is now widely available as a generic medication that is manufactured and supplied widely throughout the United States by several companies.Bayer closely monitors the safety and efficacy of its fluoroquinolones on an ongoing basis, as we do with all of our products. As with any prescription medication, Bayer encourages patients to discuss the risks and benefits of these medications with their healthcare provider.”The drug maker Janssen is no longer making Levaquin, but the drug is still available in generic form.Spackman adds, “Something more has to be done to let people know the extreme side effects it can have on you.” 4489
