SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Visitors are more than happy to rave about San Diego, according to a new travel survey.San Diego was considered one of America's best big cities, ranking ahead of New York City, in Conde Nast Traveler's 32nd annual Reader's Choice awards. The travel magazine surveyed 600,000 voters for their favorite cities in the U.S., adding more weight to San Diego's consideration.Readers celebrated America's Finest City for the region's food scene (which seems to be getting more and more recognition) and amusements for visitors of all ages. RELATED: Seven secret spots in San Diego to visit this summerOr as Conde Nast puts it: "San Diego has officially stepped out from the shadow of its big sister due north, earning world-class destination status that goes well beyond the waves."Tourist attractions are plentiful throughout San Diego County, with amusements in North County like the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and Legoland California down to the South Bay for Living Coast Discovery Center and Aquatica SeaWorld's Waterpark.Everywhere in between, the county's coastline offers more fun on the water or on land from Oceanside to Chula Vista. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While many local events went on as planned this weekend, several conferences slated for San Diego have canceled or postponed due to coronavirus worries. So far, a handful of events have pulled back or canceled their plans:The 34th National Institute on White Collar Crime has canceled its planned March 11-13 conference at Marriott Marquis San Diego, citing coronavirus fears. On its website, organizers with the American Bar Association (ABA) said the decision to cancel was made "as a result of the large number of speakers and attendees who were compelled to cancel their participation due to travel restrictions put in place by employers." The institute will not be rescheduled, according to ABA. The organization said refunds are being processed to attendees, but any travel reservations made will have to be handled individually.Leaders of the Experimental Biology conference set to take place April 4-7 canceled the massive gathering over COVID-19 as well. The conference expected more than 12,000 attendees at the San Diego Convention Center. The 2020 CIE Summit business technology summit at Marriott Marquis San Diego has been rescheduled from March 18-20 to Aug. 12-14 "out of an abundance of caution," organizers say. Organizers with the Future of Individualized Medicine 2020, scheduled for March 12-13 at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, also canceled their event "based on concern for the health of our registrants, speakers, exhibitors and staff."The convention center says in addition to the cancellation, some organizers have contacted them about postponing their events until later this year. In response to COVID-19 worries, the convention center says staff have received training and taken precautionary measures, like increasing the frequency of cleaning, disinfecting commonly touched objects, and placing signage and hand sanitizer stations throughout the building.10News has reached out to Comic-Con International regarding any possible adjustments to their July convention, but have not heard back.RELATED COVERAGE:San Diego event organizers temper coronavirus fearsSan Diego economy could take a hit if cruises are canceledThough only a handful of events, each cancellation prolongs worries for those with plans to come to town and those whose livelihood depends on that travel.Joel Valenzuela, the maritime director for Port, says their industry provides about 0 million in economic impact. While no cruises have been canceled, he says the Port expects to take a hit. "We've done things such as increasing sanitation areas within the port facilities, as well as setting aside some prescreening and quarantine areas in case the cruise lines would need it," Valenzuela said. "I don't know how bad it's gonna get, how good it's going to get but hopefully it passes."The convention center could also be affected. The center estimates it had a regional impact of .2 billion in 2018, 7 million of that coming from Comic-Con.According to CIC Research, San Diego visitor spending in 2015 totaled about .9 billion. Visitors who stay in hotels represent about 28 percent of all visitors to the county, but generated about 67 percent of visitor spending.San Diego has not had any local cases of the new coronavirus. Two individuals previously quarantined at MCAS Miramar after being evacuated from China were infected but have since recovered and returned home. 3421

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With the lack of housing in San Diego, you need to act fast or you could miss out on a great home. Some San Diegans are getting proactive. They’re not waiting for a home to go up for rent; they’re reaching out to landlords before the property is even available. 10News is sharing a man's creative way to make it San Diego. All it takes is one breathtaking look and the appeal is undeniable. Orange Avenue, The Hotel Del, the Ferry Landing; they all make Coronado irresistible."Coronado is awesome. It's such a small-town feel. People say ‘hi’ to each other. You know your neighbors," said Cory Stock.Stock is a hard-working Surface Rescue Swimmer Instructor for the Navy. He doesn’t have a lot of time to research and look for a new place to live.RELATED: People converting vans to avoid high rent"Lots of swimming, lots of PT," said Stock.Work for Stock is either at Naval Base San Diego or at Naval Base Coronado right on the island. So, Stock decided Coronado would also be a great place to call home. But there was one problem."The turnaround of places is so quick here," said Stock.Knowing anything in his price range might get snatched up in a heartbeat, Stock decided to get proactive and created a post on the Coronado Happenings Facebook page. He was looking for a one or two bedroom rental no later than January 1. It didn't hurt that he threw in the part about being active duty Navy with excellent credit and references, and that he's also a handyman. RELATED: Think we're in a housing crisis? Try this city"The mere fact that you're in the military; it gives you a lot of credit right off the bat," said Stock. In Coronado, being in the military practically means you're already vetted. And it worked. Within weeks Stack and his girlfriend found an affordable home near work, right in the middle of paradise. "Facebook is so big now and social media,” said Stock. “It's a lot easier to get your name out that way to people you'll probably never meet rather than hoping you bump into somebody."Stock moves into his new place at the beginning of the new year. 2097

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two more migrants were diagnosed with the flu in the county shelter downtown and one was sent to the hospital, according to Jose Alvarez Communications Specialist with the County of San Diego Communications Office. The flights have been landing at Lindbergh Field since May 14th, easing overcrowding in Texas detention centers.Border Patrol officials stated migrants are given a health screening in Texas before they travel to San Diego, and are screened again once they land.County Health officials stated a total of 31 migrants have been diagnosed with the flu since May 19, officials say. Twenty-seven migrants, 13 families, are currently quarantined.RELATED: County responds to flu outbreak at shelter, linked to Texas migrants flown to San Diego"This is a new situation to us and I'm told it could get much worse," County Supervisor Dianne Jacob said.Once off the plane, the migrants who crossed illegally in Texas and flown to San Diego are taken to a Border Patrol Facility to be processed by ICE.Eventually, they end up at the shelter. There they get another health screening and starting Thursday, everyone gets a mask and Tamiflu pill as a precaution to keep the sickness from spreading. The pill and a flu shot is offered to staff and volunteers at the shelter. As of Friday, extra nurses are coming into the shelter to check on the group and ensure no one else has come down with the flu. Those who are diagnosed go with their families to a hotel that has individual air units, so they don't spread the virus. They are educated on why they should stay in the room and, if they leave, what precautions to take so they don't infect others.Migrants in the shelter can come and go as they wish.Border Patrol stated migrants who exhibit flu-like symptoms are not allowed to fly and instead are given medical treatment in Texas. Border Patrol also said agents closely monitor detainees throughout the trip. The state dedicates ,000,000 to migrant shelters, according to County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher's Office. 2045
