CHULA VISTA (KGTV) — The man accused of threatening St Rose of Lima Church and School plead not guilty at his arraignment Friday at the Chula Vista Courthouse.During the afternoon proceedings Thomas Escajeda, 61, entered the courtroom and sat shoulders hunched, a frown carved into his face with eyes nervously panning the room.No facts in the case were shared, and bail stayed at 0,000.RELATED: Man accused of threatening South Bay church, school says it's all a misunderstandingAfter the arraignment, Escajeda's attorney Adam Hepburn spoke on his demeanor, "he's never been in custody before, this is his first time ever being arrested this is his first time ever having this type of contact with law enforcement... He is clearly upset, it's a new setting it's very difficult."Escajeda spoke exclusively with 10News from jail Thursday explaining it was all a big misunderstanding. I think when we call an office, I mean we don't tell them I mean okay I'm going to kill everybody because I'm going to make a good chocolate, I mean that is not that way that we talk when we make a phone call."When asked if he should be punished, she replied, "It's not something I will decide," saying she wasn't the one to judge.Escajeda is facing a felony criminal threat and misdemeanor electronic communications threat charges."We take these threats very seriously I can tell you that our office and several other agencies formed essentially a committee, or a task force, and tried to develop protocols for these situations so we can get out in front," Deputy District Attorney Christopher Blaylock said.He could not say how long they've had the task force in place.Hepburn said they didn't argue the 0,000 bail Friday, "In order to combat or contradict that we like to get as many facts as possible, speak to family, friends, and do our own investigation before we make a bail pitch."Hepburn said the judge has to make a ruling on bail based on what has been presented so far in the police report, and take that as fact.If Escajeda's not guilty plea stands and he gets out, Sotelo said she'd welcome him back, "we're all sons of God it wouldn't be any different with me." 2762

(KGTV) - Southbound Interstate 5 shut down during rush hour Wednesday evening to search a car possibly linked to a robbery for explosives, California Highway Patrol officers said.The car was pulled over about 5:10 p.m. at Main Street in Chula Vista, CHP officials said.San Diego Police said the stop was related to the robbery of the US Bank at 3201 University Ave. in North Park at 4:48 p.m. during which a man referred to explosives.All southbound lanes of traffic stopped at 5:20 p.m. as officers searched the car for explosives. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The man accused of shooting and killing an employee at a South Bay fast-food restaurant and injuring two others pleaded not guilty in court Tuesday. A judge at the arraignment ordered Albert Lee Blake be held on million bail, noting he poses extreme danger to the public. Blake was arrested in Memphis, Tennessee Friday. “ Investigators with the local task force began to hunt for the fugitive. He was pinpointed in a house on the 2300 block of Hubbard street today. He was taken into custody without incident,” the U.S. Marshals Service said in a news release Friday.Blake is charged with shooting and killing Maribel Merino-Ibanez, 28, and wounding two men on November 6 at the Church’s Chicken on Del Sol Boulevard. Today, Ibanez's mother spoke to news crews after Blake's arraignment, thanking police officers and investigators.Emma Merino said she felt anger when she saw Blake in person for the first time in court Tuesday."It's awful what he did to me," said Merino. "He took away my daughter, she was a perfect daughter.""My heart is broken, I have to live with it all my life until I die," she continued. He is due in court again on December 19 for a status hearing. Prosecutors say his case is not eligible for the death penalty.Court documents show that Blake has a lengthy criminal history dating back to the 1990s. (KGTV) — Chula Vista's sprawling University and Innovation District site was presented to California State University consultants this week as a possible location for a future campus.Eric Crockett, Chula Vista's economic development director, says consultants provided city, business, and education leaders with "a lot of feedback" during discussions about the region's possibilities."Everybody was very supportive, everyone knows there’s a need for higher education," Crockett said. "South Bay has a need for higher education."Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas added that the meeting showed "pretty significant movement" for the city's planned University and Innovation District, which includes more than 500 acres of availability for a campus."I think is the best argument in our favor is that we're in a bi-national region and that this is a huge economic driver in the State of California," Salas said. The state already understands that model," Crockett said. "It’s almost the same for-profit model."City officials have already envisioned the district would include a commercial and residential component. Chula Vista laid all of those qualities on the table."We’re trying not to create a drain on the state or take money from other universities," Crockett said. "When we did our planning document, it also contains for-profit uses."In addition to Chula Vista's land availability, the area is home to Southwestern College and situated near several other community colleges, including San Diego City College, San Diego Mesa College, Cuyamaca College, and Grossmont College.Salas added that the city has continued talks with San Marcos-based Saint Katherine College for 10-acres of the site. Salas said that university could potentially start off the site's development and work alongside the CSU development, adding more appeal for CSU.Consultants will continue to meet with leaders from each community to learn how a potential campus could best serve the state's higher education needs. Those meetings will consider the area's relationship with community colleges, benefit to the region, land availability, and potential enrollment.Consultants developing the feasibility study are working on behalf of CSU to keep the process objective, Uhlenkamp says. Crockett said the feasibility study should be finalized by July 1. 3515
