NEW DELHI, March 16 (Xinhua) -- The Indian government has ordered food originating from Japan to be tested for radiation in the wake of explosions at a Japanese nuclear plant following a devastating earthquake-tsunami last Friday, reported local media Wednesday.Authorized officers of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) at Indian ports, airports have been asked by the government to get food originating from Japan after March 11, 2011 to be tested for radiation, according to Press Trust of India. The Department of Revenue, Government of India, has also been requested to advise all the customs points in the country where imported food is cleared, to test samples on similar lines, according to the report.
WASHINGTON, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Researchers at Brigham and Women 's Hospital (BWH), a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, have identified a human lung stem cell that is self-renewing and capable of forming and integrating multiple biological structures of the lung. This research will be published Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine."This research describes, for the first time, a true human lung stem cell. The discovery of this stem cell has the potential to offer those who suffer from chronic lung diseases a totally novel treatment option by regenerating or repairing damaged areas of the lung," said the study's corresponding author Piero Anversa, who is also director of the Center for Regenerative Medicine at the hospital.Using lung tissue from surgical samples, researchers identified and isolated the human lung stem cell and tested the functionality of the stem cell both in vitro and in vivo. Once the stem cell was isolated, researchers demonstrated in vitro that the cell was capable of dividing both into new stem cells and also into cells that would grow into various types of lung tissue. Next, researchers injected the stem cell into mice with damaged lungs. The injected stem cells differentiated into new bronchioles, alveoli and pulmonary vessel cells which not only formed new lung tissue, but also integrated structurally to the existing lung tissue in the mice. The researchers define this cell as truly "stem" because it fulfills the three categories necessary to fall under stem cell categorization: first, the cell renews itself; second, it forms into many different types of lung cells; and third, it is transmissible, meaning that after a mouse was injected with the stem cells and responded by generating new tissue, researchers were then able to isolate the stem cell in the treated mouse, and use that cell in a new mouse with the same results."These are the critical first steps in developing clinical treatments for those with lung disease for which no therapies exist. Further research is needed, but we are excited about the impact this discovery could have on our ability to regenerate or recreate new lung tissues to replace damaged areas of the lungs," said Joseph Loscalzo, chair of the Department of Medicine at BWH and co-author.
WELLINGTON, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Eating kiwifruit might be a much better way of getting vitamin C into your system than taking purified vitamin supplements, according to research from New Zealand.Researchers with the University of Otago found that in mice eating kiwifruit, vitamin C uptake was five times as effective as taking a purified supplement form. The study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the highest ranking journal for human nutrition research, said a statement from the university.Lead researcher Associate Professor Margreet Vissers said people required vitamin C (ascorbate) in all body tissues and organs to be healthy, but the only source of vitamin C was through food or in purified form, arguably the most commonly consumed vitamin supplement. In the experiment vitamin C-deficient mice were fed the vitamin over a month, either as kiwifruit or as an equivalent amount of pure vitamin C, said the statement.Mice fed the kiwifruit absorbed vitamin C much more efficiently than those given the purified supplement form, and they also retained it for longer, indicating something in the fruit improved absorption and retention."The findings of the mouse trial have important implications for human nutrition," said Vissers."The question that has often been asked is whether a supplement is as good a source of vitamin C as whole foods, but few studies have addressed this issue. We are uniquely placed to do that work. "An equivalent human study was underway to determine whether the situation also applied to people, said the statement. The mouse study was funded by the university and kiwifruit marketing firm Zespri.
BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planner said Monday that price supervision and control measures have achieved steady progress with 2010's Consumer Price Index, slightly exceeding the target ceiling by 0.3 percentage points to hit 3.3 percent. To rein in soaring commodities prices, joint efforts have been made to manage inflation expectations, promote production, ensure supplies and strengthen price supervision in 2010, said the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) in an online statement.Prices of necessities accelerating during the second half of 2010 have been contained with vegetable prices down 9.4 percent in December from the previous month last year, it said.Further, prices of edible vegetable, pork, egg, sugar, liquefied petroleum gas and clothing also decreased significantly in December month on month, the statement said.To cope with rising prices beginning in July 2010, especially prices of basic supplies, the central government promptly introduced joint inter-ministerial meetings to discuss price controls among 17 ministries and ordered local governments to establish the same mechanism, it noted.Local governments have worked on improving agricultural facilities, especially in south China's Hainan province, to increase vegetables supplies for northern cities over the past year, the statement said. The statement forecasts that vegetable planting areas in 2010's autumn and winter will increase 530,000 hectares year on year, sending output to 337 million tonnes. To ensure production and supply, departments have worked to reduce fertilizer exports and promote links between production areas and purchasing areas, it added.Further, relevant authorities also took measures to stabilize prices of electricity and coal, and to ensure smooth transportation of agricultural produce.Authorities also granted temporary subsidies and raised basic wages and minimum living subsidies for urban and rural residents to guarantee people's daily life.
