For the first time, an object in our solar system has been found more than 100 times farther than Earth is from the sun.The International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center announced the discovery Monday, calling the object 2018 VG18. But the researchers who found it are calling it "Farout."They believe the spherical object is a dwarf planet more than 310 miles in diameter, with a pinkish hue. That color has been associated with objects that are rich in ice, and given its distance from the sun, that isn't hard to believe. Its slow orbit probably takes more than 1,000 years to make one trip around the sun, the researchers said. The distance between the Earth and the sun is an AU, or astronomical unit -- the equivalent of about 93 million miles. Farout is 120 AU from the sun. Eris, the next most distant object known, is 96 AU from the sun. For reference, Pluto is 34 AU away. The object was found by the Carnegie Institution for Science's Scott S. Sheppard, the University of Hawaii's David Tholen and Northern Arizona University's Chad Trujillo -- and it's not their first discovery. The team has been searching for a super-Earth-size planet on the edge of our solar system, known as Planet Nine or Planet X, since 2014. They first suggested the existence of this possible planet in 2014 after finding "Biden" at 84 AU. Along the way, they have discovered more distant solar system objects suggesting that the gravity of something massive is influencing their orbit.Farout was found using the Japanese Subaru 8-meter telescope on Hawaii's Mauna Kea in November. Follow-up observations with Carnegie's Las Campanas Observatory's Magellan telescope in Chile determined its path, brightness and color."This discovery is truly an international achievement in research using telescopes located in Hawaii and Chile, operated by Japan, as well as by a consortium of research institutions and universities in the United States," Trujillo said in a statement. "With new wide-field digital cameras on some of the world's largest telescopes, we are finally exploring our Solar System's fringes, far beyond Pluto."In October, the team announced the discovery of "the Goblin" at 80 AU; it's so named because the distant solar system object was first spotted near Halloween. It's unlikely that these objects are influenced by the gravity of gas giants Neptune and Uranus because they never get close enough to them -- which indicates that something else is determining their orbits.Farout's orbit is yet to be determined."2018 VG18 is much more distant and slower moving than any other observed Solar System object, so it will take a few years to fully determine its orbit," Sheppard said in a statement. "But it was found in a similar location on the sky to the other known extreme Solar System objects, suggesting it might have the same type of orbit that most of them do. The orbital similarities shown by many of the known small, distant Solar System bodies was the catalyst for our original assertion that there is a distant, massive planet at several hundred AU shepherding these smaller objects." 3114

Holiday marketers have your number, and they know how to entice you to spend. You try to rein it in. But two favorite strategies can lead to spending more, according to a 2018 survey by the Center for the New Middle Class, a research organization funded by Elevate, which lends to credit-challenged borrowers. Consumers who shopped at sales were 50% more likely to say they spent more than they expected. Among shoppers who used coupons, 38.5% said they overspent. Many shoppers try to be careful instead of making a spending plan. Using a budget can feel like it’s wringing the joy out of a happy season. Why? Giving feels good, says Jeff Kreisler, co-author of “Dollars and Sense: How We Misthink Money and How to Spend Smarter.”But simply being careful doesn’t work, “because a lot of the reasons we make poor financial decisions are unconscious,” says Kreisler, who’s editor in chief of PeopleScience.com, which applies behavioral science to the marketplace. However, you can position yourself to recognize — and overcome — overspending triggers.Use the best defense: a holiday budgetAshley Feinstein Gerstley, a financial coach and founder of the Fiscal Femme website, advises setting aside time — not over an hour — to list holiday expenses. Build in a buffer, because you’ll forget some things. But you’ll be better off if you have a number in mind, she says.Be realistic, not rigid, about your budget. Otherwise, controlling expenses can seem so futile you don’t bother trying, she says. “It’s like being on a strict diet and figuring if you cheated and had a cookie, you may as well eat the whole bag.”If you worry about overspending, consider getting a prepaid gift card in that amount, Kreisler says. It can help you stay aware of what you are spending and what’s left.Having a successful holiday spending plan may also inspire you to 1855

For years, there has been a shortage of African American men teaching in public schools. Now, a university in Maryland hopes to become a nationwide model that gets more black men to the head of the class. Julius Davis is an associate professor at Bowie State University, located about 45 minutes outside Washington, D.C. He’s working on a lesson plan he hopes will impact the future of black students in Maryland. “I always knew the one thing I wanted to do was give back,” he says. This school year, Davis is in charge of a new effort to get more black males interested in teaching and ultimately, in front of the classroom. It could be a tough test. Black men make up less than two percent of teachers in the workforce nationwide, according to latest statistics by the Department of Education. “I think that there's a lot of negativity about what goes on in education and why people shouldn't pursue the career: low pay, issues with students,” he explains. Davis hopes to change that perception by getting high school boys excited about becoming teachers through conferences, trips and mentoring programs. It’ll be paid for with the help of a ,000 grant by the university system of Maryland. “Many black males express an interest in education early on. The problem is they're not engaged throughout their 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade years, so we lose them,” Davis says. For Davis, it's a way to pay it forward and remember the way black teachers helped him.“I would say they went above and beyond,” he recalls. “They pulled me to the side when I wasn't doing right and got me on track. They kept me focused. They wouldn't let me fail.” It’s a lesson Davis learned in high school that he now hopes to pass on to other students. 1749

How to address school violence has been a big question following the Parkland school shooting. Today, a government panel released its recommendations.Max Schachter’s 14-year-old son, Alex, was killed in the shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School. Since then, Schachter has been pushing for ways to make schools safer.Tuesday, he came to the White House to show his support for a new report from the Trump administration’s School Safety Commission. The commission does not recommend any major changes to state or federal gun laws. Instead, it encourages states to allow courts to temporarily take guns away from people who pose a danger to themselves or others. The report also calls for better access to mental health services. Additionally, the commission doesn’t want the media to mention the name or show pictures of suspects in mass shootings. The report also calls for better access to mental health services. Additionally, the commission doesn’t want the media to mention the name or show pictures of suspects in mass shootings.“We don’t want to let perfection get in the way of good,” says Schachter. “I think this is a huge step forward.”“If someone walks on the campus with an AR-15, the only way you’re going to stop him is by putting a bullet in him,” Schachter says. 1290

FORT THOMAS, Kentucky — Thirteen-year-old Lilliana Schalck, who died unexpectedly this past weekend, was a flyer, her father said. At just 4-feet-10-inches and 80 pounds, the cheerleader was perfectly suited to being tossed into the air by her teammates, topping their human pyramids and landing safely.“Everybody liked her,” father Dan Schalck said. “She was supportive on the mat. Doing her thing, she was fierce, but when it comes to anyone else, she was very supportive.”Doctors still don’t know exactly what happened to the eighth-grader Saturday. Her father was waiting to watch her perform in a Columbus cheer competition when she told her teammates she had begun to feel sick. Her limbs tingled; she felt weak.Dehydration, Dan thought at first. Maybe anxiety, although she had never struggled with that before. The team called an ambulance, and Lilliana was alert enough on the ride to respond to questions. Doctors ferried her from the ambulance to the emergency room to intensive care. Whatever happened, they couldn’t stop it. Less than two hours after she had begun to feel sick, she was gone.“At one point, the medical staff said, ‘If anyone’s close to her, you need to call them,’” her father said. “And I’m like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me. How can this be?’”He still doesn’t know. But Monday night, the wound still fresh, he was comforted by the Highland Heights community’s outpouring of love and support for his strong-willed, high-flying daughter. She was a middle school student, but she was talented enough to compete with high schoolers. She was a ferocious competitor, but she loved her friends. Even as the Schalck family struggled with overwhelming grief, Dan remained grateful for the kindness of the people who knew her.“There are really kind and good-hearted kids,” he said. 1815
