ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A 31-year-old man was jailed Tuesday on suspicion of seriously injuring another man with a hatchet during a fight at an Escondido transit center, police said. Dispatchers received a call around 9:40 p.m. Monday from a person who reported that two men were fighting at the Escondido Transit Center on West Valley Parkway, west of Centre City Parkway, Escondido police Sgt. Mike Graesser said. Officers responded to the scene and found both men near the transit center suffering from serious injuries, Graesser said. RELATED: 'Kai the Hitchhiker' convicted of killing elderly manA hatchet was also found nearby and investigators believe both men hit each other with the hatchet during the fight, the sergeant said. Both men were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, Graesser said. Exactly what prompted the fight remains unclear, but investigators were in the process of obtaining video from cameras at the transit center, Graesser said. Fears of a trade war between the United States and China just escalated again. The Trump administration on Tuesday published a list of about 1,300 Chinese exports that could be targeted for tariffs. The United States plans to apply the tariffs to about billion worth of goods to punish China for its theft of trade secrets, including software, patents and other technology. A 25% tariff would be applied to all the products, according to the US Trade Representative, a wing of the White House. Many of the tariffs would target the Chinese aerospace, tech and machinery industries. Others would target medical equipment, medicine and educational material, such as bookbinding equipment. 699

ESCONDIDO (KGTV) -- Hundreds of North County school children were surprised Thursday with a new book for National Reading Day, along with a visit from Clifford the Big Red Dog. 10News employees, with help from the Scripps Howard Foundation, donated 3,000 books to elementary schools in Fallbrook and Escondido. It was the most books ever donated by the station in the annual “If You Give a Child a Book…” campaign, and nearly twice as many as last year, said Community Outreach & PR Manager Patty Thompson.Kindergartners and first graders at Live Oak Elementary in Fallbrook and Farr Avenue Elementary in Escondido lined up to greet Clifford and pick out a book of their own. Other books will be donated to libraries in the districts, Thompson said.At Live Oak Elementary, one girl picked out a new book about Barbie. “I like to read because sometimes, when it’s a fairy tale, it can take you to magical places,” she said.“A lot of these kids can’t afford books,” said Live Oak Elementary librarian Stacey Regotti.Farr Avenue principal Lizeth Lopez said encouraging students to read early is critical.“Data shows that if we can’t get our kids to read by third grade, their future may be limited,” she said. “So starting at 4, 5, and 6 years old is when we can catch them.”10News is owned by the E.W. Scripps Company. Scripps-owned stations across the country took part in Thursday’s event, distributing more than 172,000 books to children in need. The company’s corporate foundation, the Scripps Howard Foundation, matched donations by Scripps employees. The San Diego County Office of Education and Scholastic Book Fairs of San Diego also contributed to the book giveaways in the North County. 1705

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - The bluffs that collapsed in North San Diego County Friday, killing three people, are a known trouble spot to a local geologist.Former San Diego State University professor Dr. Pat Abbott has led several geology field trips to Grandview Beach to point out unstable cliffs. Abbott described the cliff as a “solid mass of sand grains cemented together” that suddenly gave way on a sunny and warm afternoon. Waves erode the shoreline in addition to groundwater that seeps into the bluffs, leaving behind white streaks of salt and creating cracks, Abbott said. RELATED: Three dead, two others injured in north San Diego County bluff collapseHe said the beachgoers who were beneath the cliffs wouldn’t have had time to escape. “By the time you hear it, that means it’s broken and it’s on the way; you don’t have time to react and leave,” said Abbott. He recommends anyone who visits the beach to stay away from the bluffs for safety.RELATED: INTERACTIVE MAP: Recent San Diego County bluff collapsesHe also says walls may not be the answer to protect beachgoers. “Walls don’t solve the problem, they push it into the future,” Abbott said. 1166
